Dissemination of respiratory secretions during tracheal tube suctioning in an intensive care unit.

Most intensive care patients require frequent tracheal toilet, a procedure usually performed by suctioning the tracheal tube. Such procedures often result in the production and dissemination of droplets. We measured the distance visible droplets disseminated during tracheal tube suctioning of patients in an adult surgical intensive care unit. Fifty consecutive suction procedures in 14 patients intubated with a cuffed tracheal tube were investigated. Visible droplets were scattered over a mean distance of 60 +/- 39 cm (range 25 to 168 cm) from the tracheal tube. Blood agar culture plates were p

Palladium(II) Complexes of Substituted Salicylaldehydes: Synthesis, Characterization and Investigation of Their Biological Profile.

Five palladium(II) complexes of substituted salicylaldehydes (X-saloH, X = 4-Et2N (for 1), 3,5-diBr (for 2), 3,5-diCl (for 3), 5-F (for 4) or 4-OMe (for 5)) bearing the general formula [Pd(X-salo)2] were synthesized and structurally characterized. The crystal structure of complex [Pd(4-Et2N-salo)2] was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes can scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radicals and reduce H2O2. They are active against two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and two Gram-nega

Genetic analysis of citrus leafminer susceptibility.

Damage caused by the citrus leafminer (CLM), Phyllocnistis citrella, is highly dependent on the citrus flushing pattern. Chemical control is only required in young trees, both in nurseries and in newly established orchards. However, this situation is completely different in countries where the causal agent of citrus canker, the bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri exists. CLM infestation results in a higher incidence of citrus canker infection. Among preventive control strategies that provide environmentally sound and sustainable solutions, resistant or tolerant varieties remain the most

A hot pepper cDNA encoding ascorbate peroxidase is induced during the incompatible interaction with virus and bacteria.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Capsicum annuum L. is infected by a number of viruses, including the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). To study the defense-related genes that are induced by TMV in hot peppers, the pepper plant, which is susceptible to P1.2 but resistant to the P0 pathotype of TMV, was inoculated with TMV-P0. Differential screening isolated the genes that were specifically up- or down-regulated during the hypersensitive response (HR). The CaAPX1 cDNA clone that putatively encodes a polypeptide of cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase was selected as an up-regulated gene. It was isolated for further study. The full-length

Improved Persistence of Bacteriophage Formulation with Nano N-Acetylcysteine-Zinc Sulfide and Tomato Bacterial Spot Disease Control.

Bacteriophages are biocontrol agents used to manage bacterial diseases. They have long been used against plant pathogenic bacteria; however, several factors impede their use as a reliable disease management strategy. Short-lived persistence on plant surfaces under field conditions results mainly from rapid degradation by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. Currently, there are no effective commercial formulations that protect phages from UV. The phage ΦXp06-02-1, which lyses strains of the tomato bacterial spot pathogen Xanthomonas perforans, was mixed with different concentrations of the nano

Metabolic and transcriptional alternations for defense by interfering OsWRKY62 and OsWRKY76 transcriptions in rice.

Metabolomic and transcriptomic approaches were used to dissect the enhanced disease resistance in the plants harbouring a RNA interfering construct of OsWRKY62 and OsWRKY76 (dsOW62/76) genes. The primary metabolic pathways were activated in dsOW62/76 compared with wild-type (ZH17) plants, revealed by increased accumulation of amino acids and constituents of citric acid cycle etc. Contents of phenolic acids derived from phenylpropanoid pathway were elevated in dsOW62/76 plants. Importantly, phenolamides, conjugates of the phenolic acids with amines, were detected in large number and mostly at h

Ciprofloxacin-resistant bacterial keratitis.

Ciprofloxacin, a new broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, has recently become available in topical ophthalmic solution (3 mg/ml) for the treatment of bacterial keratitis. It has rapidly become the drug of choice in treating bacterial keratitis. We treated three patients with bacterial corneal ulcers that were resistant to ciprofloxacin, yet were effectively treated with other topical antimicrobial agents. The initial culture results are important in the therapy of corneal ulcers.

Chemical Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Pyrolysis Liquids from Walnut Residue.

Pyrolysis liquid (PL) derived from biomass pyrolysis exhibits biopesticidal properties and represents a promising value-added product within the sustainable circular economy framework. However, knowledge about the antimicrobial potential of PLs produced from walnut residue at different pyrolysis temperatures remains limited. We investigated the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of PLs obtained from agricultural walnut residue (Juglans regia L.) against selected plant pathogenic bacteria and fungi. PLs were produced at four temperature ranges: 200-300 °C (W-1), 300-400 °C (W-2), 4

Identification and characterization of Phi1 and Phi3 bacteriophages targeting Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca, the causal agent of olive quick decline in Italy.

The xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is increasingly threatening global agriculture due to the absence of effective control strategies. Phage biocontrol represents a promising alternative; however, only a limited number of bacteriophages have been identified against Xf. In this study, we report the isolation and characterization of two phages of Xf subsp. pauca (Xfp), namely Xylella phage Phi1 (Phi1) and Xylella phage Phi3 (Phi3) and investigate their potential as safe and suitable biocontrol agents for future agricultural applications. Cultivar-specific physiological and proteomic patterns underlying mango susceptibility to bacterial black spot disease.

Mango bacterial black spot (MBBS) disease caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. mangiferaeindicae (Xcm) is a global problem that threatens mango productivity and quality worldwide. However, our understanding of mango physiological and proteomic responses to Xcm infection on leaves in different cultivars remains limited. Herein, we explored how two mango cultivars (Guifei and Aomang) respond to Xcm challenge at the physiological, biochemical, and proteomic levels at 6 and 12 ad post-inoculation. Our results revealed that Xcm infection induced progressive disease development in both cultivars as Guife

OsTGA2 confers disease resistance to rice against leaf blight by regulating expression levels of disease related genes via interaction with NH1.

How plants defend themselves from microbial infection is one of the most critical issues for sustainable crop production. Some TGA transcription factors belonging to bZIP superfamily can regulate disease resistance through NPR1-mediated immunity mechanisms in Arabidopsis. Here, we examined biological roles of OsTGA2 (grouped into the same subclade as Arabidopsis TGAs) in bacterial leaf blight resistance. Transcriptional level of OsTGA2 was accumulated after treatment with salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, and Xathomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae (Xoo), a bacterium causing serious blight of rice. OsTGA
