Calcium localization and tipburn development in lettuce leaves during early enlargement.

Tissue concentrations of Ca, Mg, and K were determined across immature leaves of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. 'Buttercrunch') at different stages of enlargement using electron microprobe x-ray analysis. The analysis was with a wavelength dispersive spectrometer to permit detection of low concentrations of Ca. Patterns of mineral accumulation in immature leaves that were exposed were compared to patterns of accumulation in leaves that were enclosed within a developing head. The leaves developing without enclosure were free to transpire and developed normally whereas leaves developing with enclosu

Effect of cross-fostering on neonatal sodium balance and adult blood pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

1. The aim of the present study was to compare electrolyte handling in naturally reared neonatal spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) with those reared by a Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat foster mother (denoted SHRX), as cross-fostering SHR pups to a WKY rat dam lowers adult blood pressure in the SHR. 2. The electrolyte content of WKY rat and SHR dams' milk was determined and electrolyte intake and urinary excretion rates were calculated in both naturally reared and cross-fostered WKY rat and SHR pups. 3. The milk sodium concentration fell in both strains (WKY rat: 31.8 +/- 2.0 to 15.2 +/- 1.2 mmol/L

A case of osteomalacia due to deranged mineral balance caused by saccharated ferric oxide and short-bowel syndrome: A case report.

RATIONALE: Saccharated ferric oxide has been shown to lead to elevation of fibroblast growth factor 23, hypophosphatemia, and, consequently, osteomalacia. Moreover, mineral imbalance is often observed in patients with short-bowel syndrome to some degree. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 62-year-old woman with short-bowel syndrome related with multiple resections of small intestines due to Crohn disease received regular intravenous administration of saccharated ferric oxide. Over the course of treatment, she was diagnosed with tetany, which was attributed to hypocalcemia. Additional assessments of the pati

Electrolyte supplementation patterns and evaluation in perioperative parenteral nutrition for patients undergoing major thoracoabdominal surgery: A multicenter, observational study.

For patients undergoing major thoracoabdominal surgery, perioperative nutritional management is essential. Although enteral nutrition is preferred, parenteral nutrition (PN) is needed when oral or enteral intake is inadequate or contraindicated and serves as a key electrolyte source. Electrolytes are crucial for fluid balance, acid-base stability, and metabolic function, and inappropriate supplementation may cause serious disturbances. Real-world evidence on perioperative PN electrolyte use in China remains limited. This multicenter retrospective study included 2018 patients who underwent majo

Perioperative Nutritional Optimization in Total Joint Arthroplasty: From Screening to Supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and suboptimal nutrient status are increasingly recognized as modifiable risk factors influencing outcomes after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Older adults and medically complex patients are particularly vulnerable to perioperative catabolism, impaired wound healing, and delayed functional recovery. This review synthesized current evidence on perioperative nutritional optimization, including biochemical screening, micronutrient correction, essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation, and adjunctive metabolic strategies, to support recovery in patients undergoing total

Infantile tremor syndrome and laryngomalacia: A novel association?

BACKGROUND: Infantile tremor syndrome (ITS) is a rare clinical entity, predominantly characterized by coarse tremors, regression of motor and/or cognitive, and language milestones. Although the exact pathogenesis yet remains to be unknown, various micronutrient deficiencies like vitamin B12, zinc, magnesium, and vitamin C have been shown to be associated with ITS. Vitamin B12 deficiency is the most accepted etiology of this entity. Here we are describing a seemingly novel association of laryngomalacia with infantile tremor syndrome. METHODS: Clinical details, laboratory investigations, demogr

Metabolite Profile of Xylem Sap in Cotton Seedlings Is Changed by K Deficiency.

Xylem sap, belonging to the plant apoplast, not only provides plant tissues with inorganic and organic substances but also facilitates communication between the roots and the leaves and coordinates their development. This study investigated the effects of potassium (K) deficiency on the morphology and the physiology of cotton seedlings as well as pH, mineral nutrient contents, and metabolites of xylem sap. In particular, we compared changes in root-shoot communication under low K (LK) and normal K (NK, control) levels. Compared to control, LK stress significantly decreased seedling biomass (le

Essential element and toxic metal dyshomeostasis in childhood autism spectrum disorder: a comprehensive narrative review of correlations, tissue-specific distribution, and multifactorial regulation.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social communication and repetitive stereotyped behaviors, with a rising global prevalence. Its etiology involves genetic, environmental, and epigenetic interactions, among which essential elements [including trace elements such as zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and macrominerals like magnesium (Mg)] and toxic metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd)) are key environmental regulators of neurodevelopment. This narrative review systematically summarizes the association

Distinct Mg²⁺ responses and species-specific transcriptional regulation of the magnesium transporter MGR2 in Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg²⁺) is essential for chlorophyll synthesis, enzyme activation, and photosynthesis, but the differential regulation of Mg²⁺ homeostasis between the two founding Saccharum species (Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum) remains unknown. RESULTS: We systematically characterized the MGR gene family in S. spontaneum and S. officinarum and uncovered distinct physiological responses to Mg²⁺ availability between the two species. Comparative expression analysis across the leaf developmental gradient and diurnal cycles revealed species-specific transcriptional dynamics

Lack of Association between Inadequate Micronutrient Intake and Prognosis in Outpatients with Heart Failure.

Inadequate nutrient intake can lead to worse outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF). This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake and their association with prognosis in 121 adult and elderly outpatients with HF. Habitual micronutrient intake was evaluated using 24-h dietary recalls (minimum 2 and maximum 6). Participants were grouped into moderate (n = 67) and high (n = 54) micronutrient deficiency groups, according to the individual assessment of each micronutrient intake. Patients' sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric data a

Metabolic Characteristics of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Patients and the Role of Microelements and Diet in the Disease Management-An Overview.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is the most common autoimmune disease and the leading cause of hypothyroidism, in which damage to the thyroid gland occurs due to the infiltration of lymphocytes. It is characterized by increased levels of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin. In this review, we present the metabolic profile, the effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation and the impact of dietary management in patients with HT. For this current literature review, the databases PubMed, Cochrane, Medline and Embase were reviewed from the last ten years until March 2022. This a

A spatial analysis of lime resources and their potential for improving soil magnesium concentrations and pH in grassland areas of England and Wales.

Magnesium (Mg) is essential for animal health. Low Mg status (hypomagnesaemia) can be potentially fatal in ruminants, like cattle and sheep, and is widespread in Europe with economic impacts on farming. The application of Mg-rich agricultural lime products can help to ensure pasture forage consumed by animals contains sufficient Mg and, in areas of low pH, has the dual benefit of reducing soil acidity to levels best suited for grass production. This aim of this study was to determine if Mg-rich lime products could be used in a more effective manner in agricultural production systems. Potential
