Integration of a 3D-printed read-out platform with a quantum dot-based immunoassay for detection of the avian influenza A (H7N9) virus.

Outbreaks and potential epidemics of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus pose serious threats to human health and the global economy. As such, its timely and accurate detection is critically important. In the present study, positive hybridoma cells (6B3) were obtained, which were used to secrete high-titer avian influenza virus (AIV) H7N9 monoclonal antibodies (H7N9 mAb). Based on these mAbs, quantum dot-based lateral flow immunochromatographic strips (QD-LFICS) were developed for AIV H7N9 detection. Under optimized conditions, results from a commercial fluorescent strip reader indicat

Presurgical nasoalveolar molding with 3D printing for a patient with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate.

An 8-day-old male infant with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate had a wide alveolar defect, soft tissue deformity, and a markedly sunken nasal wing at the cleft side. The patient was treated with a series of 3D-printed molding plates and synchronously with a nasal hook. The cleft edges moved closer by 9 mm at the alveolar ridge and the nasal wing was lifted considerably. Split-type 3D printing of presurgical nasoalveolar molding helped to reduce the cleft gap, improve the arch form, approximate lip segments, and distinctly improve the morphology of the nose by correcting the flattened

A bifunctional scaffold with CuFeSe2 nanocrystals for tumor therapy and bone reconstruction.

Bone tumor is one of major challenging issues clinically. After surgical intervention, a few bone tumor cells still remain around bone defects and then proliferate over days. Fabrication of specific biomaterials with dual functions of bone tumor therapy and bone regeneration is of great significance. In order to achieve this aim, we managed to prepare bioactive glass (BG) scaffolds functionalized by the CuFeSe2 nanocrystals (BG-CFS) by combining 3D printing technique with solvothermal method. During the solvothermal reaction process, CuFeSe2 nanocrystals could in situ grow on the strut surface

A 3-Dimensional Printed Aortic Arch Template to Facilitate the Creation of Physician-Modified Stent-Grafts.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the utility of a 3-dimensional (3D) printed template of the aortic arch in the construction of a fenestrated and scalloped physician-modified stent-graft (PMSG). CASE REPORT: A 73-year-old woman with descending thoracic aneurysm was scheduled for thoracic endovascular aortic repair after being disqualified for open surgery. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) revealed no proximal landing zone as the aneurysm began from the level of the left subclavian artery, so a fenestrated/scalloped PMSG was planned. To facilitate accurate placement of the openings in the graft, a

Simultaneous acquisition of magnetic resonance elastography of the supraspinatus and the trapezius muscles.

We developed a Magnetic Resonance elastography (MRE) technique using a conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which allows a simultaneous elastography of the supraspinatus and trapezius muscles, by designing a new wave transducer (vibration pad) and optimizing the mechanical vibration frequency. Five healthy volunteers underwent an MRE. In order to transmit the mechanical vibration (pneumatic vibration) to the supraspinatus and trapezius muscles, a new vibration pad was designed using a three-dimensional (3D) printer. The vibration pad was placed on the skin 2 cm medial and 2 cm cephal

Shear Alignment Polymer Extrusion 3D Printing of High-Loading Nanocomposites With Long-Range Ordered Nanostructures.

Additive manufacturing has long struggled to bridge nanoscale functionalities with complex macroscale geometries, particularly for nanocomposites with high nanofiller loadings and ordered structures. Herein, we report shear alignment polymer extrusion (SHAPE) three-dimensional (3D) printing, a strategy that uses high shear forces to align highly loaded nanomaterials (e.g., boron nitride (BN) nanosheets and carbon nanotubes) along defined directions in polymer matrices, enabling the scalable fabrication of macroscopic nanocomposites with complex 3D architectures. A key advancement is the develo

Coaxial Bioprinting in Regenerative Medicine: Advances and Emerging Applications.

Coaxial extrusion-based bioprinting (EBB) is an emerging technology that enables the fabrication of biomimetic tissues with precise structural and biological complexities. This three-dimensional bioprinting technique utilizes specialized concentric nozzles to facilitate the simultaneous extrusion of distinct biomaterials, enabling the fabrication of layered constructs that closely resemble native tissues. Unlike traditional extrusion-based methods, coaxial printing allows for independent control over core and shell materials. This enables multimaterial integration, and tailored microenvironmen

Binary-Solvent-Programmed Single-Step Inkjet Printing of Self-Confined Micro-Inlaid OLED Arrays.

Inkjet printing offers a mask-free route to large-area electronics, yet achieving uniformity in micron-scale organic light-emitting diode (µ-OLED) arrays remains challenging. Presented here is a photolithography-free, solvent-programmed, single-step inkjet micro-inlay process in which lateral phase separation self-confines each emissive pixel. Guided by solubility parameters, a trichloromethane (TCM)/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) binary solvent is designed to optimize interactions among the solvents, emissive solutes, and the poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) underlayer. Micro-Raman mapping, cross-secti

3D printed firearm identification: A comparison of machine learning models.

The production of three-dimensional (3D) printed firearms is concerning as these objects are unregulated and untraceable due to the lack of serial numbers. Criminals can obtain 3D models online or design their own versions using computer-aided design (CAD) software. While prior research and law enforcement efforts have focused primarily on analyzing tangible printed objects, investigations analyzing digital evidence are currently limited. This study presents a proof-of-concept approach for classifying firearm and non-firearm objects using geometric information extracted from g-code files, whic

Finite Element Analysis of Upper Limb Splint Designs and Materials for 3D Printing.

Three-dimensional (3D) printed splints must be lightweight and adequately ventilated to maximize the patient's convenience while maintaining requisite strength. The ensuing loss of strength has a substantial impact on the transformation of a solid splint model into a perforated or porous model. Thus, two methods for making perforations-standard approach and topological optimization-are investigated in this study. The objective of this research is to ascertain the impact of different perforation shapes and their distribution as well as topology optimization on the customized splint model. The s

Automated measurement of penile curvature using deep learning-based novel quantification method.

OBJECTIVE: Develop a reliable, automated deep learning-based method for accurate measurement of penile curvature (PC) using 2-dimensional images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A set of nine 3D-printed models was used to generate a batch of 913 images of penile curvature (PC) with varying configurations (curvature range 18° to 86°). The penile region was initially localized and cropped using a YOLOv5 model, after which the shaft area was extracted using a UNet-based segmentation model. The penile shaft was then divided into three distinct predefined regions: the distal zone, curvature zone, and proxi

A Case Report Describing Pre-operative Contouring of an Orthopedic Implant using a 3D-Printed Patient-specific Model.

INTRODUCTION: Paget's disease is a metabolic bone disorder characterized by abnormal patterns in bone remodeling, resulting in variable degrees of chronic bone pain, deformation of the long bones and rarely, and pathologic fracture. These issues can pose difficult surgical challenges, particularly in the elderly frail population, where the benefits of orthopedic intervention must be balanced with minimizing inherent surgical risks. Such considerations often include reducing operative time and blood loss, allowing for early mobilization, stabilizing an impending fracture, and providing symptom

Biocompatible designated Resin-3D-printed polymers exhibit reproductive toxicity prevented by Parylene-C.

Resin three-dimensional (3D) printing is an increasingly popular manufacturing and prototyping method used to create microphysiological systems (MPS), but resin cytotoxicity significantly hinders its adoption, especially when sensitive cell models are incorporated. The mammalian oocyte and early preimplantation embryo consist of cells that are highly sensitive to toxicants and thus represent stringent cell-based models for biocompatibility testing. We developed a Multi-Endpoint Oocyte Safety Assay (MEIOSA) to evaluate the biocompatibility of four ISO 10993 biocompatible BioMed resins (Clear, D

Anatomical 3D-printed metaphyseal cone in revision total knee arthroplasty: A short-term clinical and radiological follow-up evaluation.

PURPOSE: Bone loss is commonly encountered during revision total knee arthroplasty (R-TKA), and metaphyseal cones are often used to address these defects. In addition, they can enhance Zone 2 fixation in R-TKA in the presence of poor bone quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term clinical and radiological outcomes of a novel three-dimensional (3D)-printed metaphyseal cone in R-TKA. METHODS: This single-centre, single-surgeon prospective study included all patients who underwent R-TKA using a novel 3D-printed anatomical metaphyseal cone (AMF, ENOVIS®) with a minimum follow-

Rapid Surgeon-Led 3D Printing of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Cylindrical Templates for Visceral Vessel Fenestration in Physician-Modified Endografts.

Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) of complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) requires precise preoperative planning to ensure proper alignment of visceral fenestrations. However, commercial planning platforms remain costly and often inaccessible for many vascular centers. Low-cost, surgeon-driven digital workflows utilizing open-source software and desktop three-dimensional (3D) printing have become practical alternatives, allowing patient-specific planning without dependence on proprietary systems. In this report, we describe a reproducible digital workflow that combines open-sourc

The Application of Biologic and Synthetic Bone Grafts in Scoliosis Surgery: A Scoping Review of Emerging Technologies.

Background: Spinal deformity correction surgery, particularly in scoliosis, often necessitates long fusion constructs and complex osteotomies that create significant structural bone defects. These defects threaten the integrity of spinal fusion, potentially compromising surgical outcomes. Bone grafting remains the cornerstone of addressing these defects, traditionally relying on autologous bone. However, limitations such as donor site morbidity and insufficient graft volume have made urgent the development and adoption of biologic substitutes and synthetic alternatives. Additionally, innovatio
