BACKGROUND: The optimal duration of antibiotic therapy for treating orthopaedic implant infections after surgical drainage and complete implant removal is unknown.
METHODS: This was a single-centre, unblinded, prospective trial randomizing (1:1) eligible patients to either 4 or 6 weeks of systemic, pathogen-targeted antibiotic therapy. Clinical trial registration number: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT0362209).

Tularemia caused by Francisella tularensis is a zoonotic infection of the Northern Hemisphere that mainly affects the skin, lymph nodes, bloodstream, and lungs. Other manifestations of tularemia are very rare, especially those with musculoskeletal involvement. Presenting in 2016, we diagnosed two cases of periprosthetic knee joint infections (PJI) caused by Francisella tularensis in Europe (one in Switzerland and one in the Czech Republic). Intramedullary knee arthrodesis is indicated when an infected total knee arthroplasty revision is failed. There is a high risk of infection after this procedure and the only option of treatment considered in these cases is AK amputation. IMPORTANCE: Silastic implants are popular for cosmetic cheek augmentation. We describe the computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in 5 cases (4 patients) with penetration of the medial aspect of Silastic cheek implants through the anterior maxillary sinus wall.
OBSERVATIONS: Three cases demonstrated associated sinus mucosal thickening, and 3 cases demonstrated infection surrounding the implant. In 3 cases, the implants migrated into the maxillary sinus, and in 1 case the implant also eroded through the nasoantral wall and extended into the nasal cavity.
