Réunion Island experienced a massive chikungunya virus epidemic in 2024-2025, with >54,000 confirmed cases. This is the second major chikungunya epidemic on the island, following the first one that peaked 20 years ago. It has been asserted that this new outbreak finds its origin in a single introduction event into the island, offering an opportunity to exploit viral genomic data to understand the epidemiological and dispersal dynamics of the introduced transmission chain. We sequenced >3,000 viral genomes collected during the epidemic. Harnessing this genomic dataset, we used several phylogeog

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a crucial antioxidant for both human health and plant adaptation to abiotic stress. Its biosynthesis relies on phytol, a moiety largely derived from chlorophyll degradation by members of the α/β hydrolase (ABH) superfamily. While genes like CLDs, PPH, and VTE7 have been characterized in model plants, their functions in melon (Cucumis melo L.) remain unknown. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis and identified five ABH family genes in melon: CmCLD1/2/3, CmPPH, and CmVTE7. Phylogenetic and motif analyses revealed both functional conservation and diversification wit

BACKGROUND: Climate change-induced heatstroke (HS) presents a critical global public health threat, necessitating the development of preventive strategies using natural, food-derived resources. Pogostemon cablin (patchouli) is a medicinal and edible dual-purpose resource that yields an essential oil (PEO), which serves as a core ingredient in traditional medicines and a promising functional food additive. However, the bioactive basis and mechanisms of PEO in maintaining physiological homeostasis against HS remain to be fully elucidated. This study assessed the protective effects of PEO on inte

Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) pestanai is a parasite of the Eurasian badger (Meles meles), reported in various European countries. However, its presence in the Iberian Peninsula had not been previously investigated. To address this knowledge gap and to assess its occurrence and potential risk factors associated with infection, we analyzed DNA from the spleens of 145 badgers sampled across 4 autonomous regions in northern Spain. Two real-time PCR assays using a reference 18S rRNA partial sequence of T. pestanai (92 bp) were developed: one based on SYBR Green chemistry and the other employing a Taq

The dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) is a multifunctional animal indispensable for the livelihoods and food security of pastoralist communities residing in arid and semi-arid regions. Despite its socio-economic and cultural significance, the welfare of camels has garnered limited scientific scrutiny, particularly regarding the effects of parasitic diseases. These diseases pose a significant barrier to camel health, resulting in considerable production losses and severe welfare challenges. This review consolidates evidence on the impact of parasitic infections, which include hemoparasites

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a neurotropic zoonotic nematode that has recently expanded into Mediterranean Europe, with reports from Mallorca, Valencia, and Naples. On Mallorca, the parasite circulates in gastropods and wildlife, yet no autochthonous human cases have been reported to date. In this context, information on its dynamics in definitive hosts remains limited. We conducted a 2.5-year surveillance study of A. cantonensis in rats on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca (Spain), integrating spatial, host-related, ecological, climatic, seasonal, and genetic data. Using a volunteer-assi

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), is one of the earliest domesticated oilseed crops. It is valued for its exceptional oil content, bioactive compounds, and adaptability to diverse agroclimatic conditions. However, its production remains highly susceptible to water scarcity particularly terminal drought and intermittent moisture deficits that in turn severely compromise the yield and oil quality. Recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, and phenomics have placed sesame as an emerging model for multi-omics-driven stress research. These approaches have uncov

The scaly-sided merganser, Mergus squamatus, is an Endangered piscivorous duck which has been declining since the late 1900s due to habitat loss, over-hunting, and climate change. Despite being a species of global conservation concern and subject to ex- and in-situ conservation efforts, genomic research has been limited, hindering our understanding of its population genetic status and evolutionary history. In this study, we present the first fully annotated, chromosome-level genome for the scaly-sided merganser, generated using Oxford Nanopore long reads, Illumina short reads, and Hi-C sequenc

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a highly destructive pest native to the Americas that was first detected in Africa in 2016. Nearly a decade later, it continues to pose a significant threat to maize production, a staple crop for millions across the continent. The pest rapidly spread, colonizing most maize-growing regions within 2yr and causing estimated annual yield losses of up to 20 million metric tons, adversely affecting food security, rural livelihoods, and economies. Farmers who rely heavily on pesticides risk the emergence of resis

Despite growing awareness of the social and psychological issues linked with animal abuse, there is a lack of large-scale research on the multidimensional factors at play in relation to such abuse in the adult population. In this first survey on animal abuse carried out in higher education in France and based on a highly powered sample (N = 55,040 participants), we investigated the relative weight of risk factors pertaining to major criminological dimensions in a multivariate model controlling for relevant demographics: General Strain Theory (GST), Social Bond Theory (SBT), and Generalized Dev

Stable isotope ratio measurements provide valuable insights into a broad range of natural processes, from planetary atmospheres and climate to interstellar chemistry. Nitrogen, which has two stable isotopes, exhibits varying isotope ratios across the solar system. To model these observations, the isotope fraction as a function of energy is essential. At the Advanced Light Source (ALS), we measured the photodissociation of molecular nitrogen (N2) with vacuum UV photons where a single photon is sufficiently energetic to dissociate the strong bond. The nitrogen atoms produced are scavenged with H

Understanding the impact of bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) on the sorption of ionizable pharmaceuticals in soils via both pH and organic matter has received little research attention so far. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted batch sorption experiments with four common ionic pharmaceuticals used in human medicine (naproxen, diclofenac, furosemide, and ibuprofen), four types of commercial BBFs (ash-based, plant-based, animal by-product-based, and manure-based), and two agricultural soils from contrasting climates (Finland and Spain). The sorption affinity of the four pharmaceuticals vari

Timely and precise insect pest detection is critical in areas with high agricultural intensity and climates that favor continuous pest activity. Traditional pest identification methods, such as manual inspection or expert guided analysis, are labor intensive and time consuming. These approaches lack scalability and hinder timely intervention, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Furthermore, the high visual similarity between pest species and intra-species variability across developmental stages further challenge detection efforts in real-world agricultural conditions. To address the

Amidst escalating climate challenges, understanding how technological innovation and policy instruments jointly shape carbon outcomes is critical, particularly in spatially connected regions. While existing research has explored the independent impacts of green technologies (GTECH) and environmental policy stringency (EPS) on CO2 emissions, limited attention has been paid to their interactions and their spatial transmission. This study fills this gap by making a threefold contribution. First, it evaluates the individual and combined effects of GTECH and EPS on CO2 emissions in the home country

Black carbon (BC) is produced by the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels and plays an important role in global climate change and carbon cycling. Mangroves, seagrass beds, and salt marshes are collectively recognized as the three major blue carbon systems. However, research on BC in mangroves remains limited. We investigated mangrove sediments from three regions, Hong Kong (HK), Guangxi (GX), and Bangladesh (BD). Using Chemical Thermal Oxidation (CTO-375) and Benzene Polycarboxylic Acids (BPCA) analytical methods, along with elemental analysis, stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and M

Nitrogen and phosphorus pollution is a critical environmental issue that causes eutrophication of water bodies. High concentrations of these nutrients primarily come from agricultural areas and are driven by catchment characteristics such as climate, hydrology, topography, geology, land use, and land cover. In addition to these factors, specific farming practices - particularly, the use of dairy farm infrastructure and management of stocking rate - also influence stream nutrient concentrations. However, the extent of the influence of specific farming practices and their relative importance in

BACKGROUND: Hyperuricemia, a prevalent metabolic disorder, is witnessing a global annual increase in incidence. The gout it triggers and its link to other chronic diseases pose a severe threat to human health. The unique natural environment of high-altitude regions, characterized by low oxygen partial pressure and cold climate, may exert a distinctive influence on human metabolism, thereby impacting the onset and progression of hyperuricemia.
METHODS: This study recruited 284 plateau migrants undergoing physical examinations at Ritu County Hospital from June to December 2024. Among them, 224
