Global trends and emerging themes in stemless shoulder arthroplasty: A 17-year bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stemless shoulder arthroplasty (SSA), referring to stemless humeral fixation in anatomic and reverse designs, has emerged as a bone-preserving alternative to traditional stemmed implants, aiming to reduce complications such as periprosthetic fractures and stress shielding. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database from 2009 to March 3, 2026. Articles were screened using structured queries and filtered by document type. Key metadata, including authorship, institutional affiliation, country of origin, citation metrics, and keywords, were extracted. Vis

Oblique Lateral Closing-Wedge Osteotomy for Cubitus Varus in Skeletally Immature Children: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Cubitus varus is the most common late complication following displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children and is primarily caused by malunion. Although often considered cosmetic, it may lead to functional impairment and long-term complications. Corrective osteotomy remains the standard treatment, with multiple techniques described. This study evaluates the clinical and radiological outcomes of oblique lateral closing wedge osteotomy in pediatric patients. CASE SERIES: This case series includes five pediatric patients (2 males, 3 females; mean age 7.6 years) with

Delayed surgery of elbow Osteochondroma: A case of overcoming barriers in rural Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondromas are the most common benign bone tumours in children. They typically manifest near the knee, proximal humerus, or distal femur. While often asymptomatic, they can lead to pain, functional impairments, deformities, and pathologic fractures. Involvement of the growth plates can result in severe deformities during childhood growth. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old Ugandan female with no prior medical conditions presented to a mobile clinic with a mass on the left elbow. This mass showed a histopathologically confirmed case of osteochondroma. The distinctive aspect of

Martial Arts: Orthopaedic Injuries and Related Biomechanics.

Martial arts are various systems of combat skills encompassing striking and grappling. Many styles have evolved into modern sports, and some have been included in the Olympics. The physicality of these can predispose practitioners to musculoskeletal injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament ruptures; patellar, shoulder, or elbow instabilities; extremity fractures; and hand and spine injuries, which have been studied both clinically and biomechanically. The most common injury related to longer time loss from participation is an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Higher injury incidence is a

Transarticular application of external skeletal fixation.

External skeletal fixators provide a useful alternative to external coaptation techniques for immobilization of joints in selected patients. This is especially true when the orthopedic injury involves an open wound requiring daily treatment. Devices such as the K-E splint, the Rudy external fixator boot, and acrylic frame fixators are economical and effective for transarticular fixation in small animal patients. Clinical indications for these techniques have included fixation of tibial or radial fractures with a short distal fragment; arthrodesis of the elbow, carpus, stifle, or tarsus; protec

Outcomes of suture bridge repair reinforced using a biceps rerouting technique.

BACKGROUND: Many techniques are available for arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, and autografts or allografts can be used in cases of poor tendon quality or large size tears. The long head of the biceps tendon is a good material for autografts. Rerouting of the biceps long head tendon during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is a good option when repair is otherwise difficult. We analyzed the clinical results and retear rates over 2 years of follow-up after rotator cuff suture bridge repair reinforced using the biceps rerouting technique in patients with large rotator cuff tears. METHODS: We re

Clinical and radiological outcomes in lateralized versus nonlateralized and distalized glenospheres in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty: a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Lateralization in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) has been used to theoretically offer the potential benefits of reduced scapular notching rates and improved stability and range of motion (ROM), particularly external rotation. The aim of this study was to compare ROM and clinical and radiographic outcomes between patients who underwent RTSA with a lateralized vs. a nonlateralized and distalized glenosphere. METHODS: A single-surgeon randomized control trial was conducted comparing 27 patients with a lateralized glenosphere and 26 patients with a nonlateralized and dista

Fishtail deformity of the distal humerus: association with osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum.

BACKGROUND: Fishtail deformity is a rare deformity of the humerus exhibiting concavity of the lateral trochlea, resulting in ulnotrochlear joint derangement. We wanted to share our experience that osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum is a common associated complication. OBJECTIVE: To summarize imaging of fishtail deformity in children centered on complications of the radiocapitellar joint. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From the radiology information system, we identified all patients <18 years with the diagnosis of fishtail deformity. We included only patients with V-shaped deformity of the

Improvised external fixator device to restore motion in a neglected elbow dislocation.

Neglected posterior dislocation of the elbow is a common problem in developing countries. One acceptable form of treatment is open reduction and transarticular Steinmann pin fixation. However, this leads to a stable but stiff elbow. We used an improvised external fixator after open reduction in two cases, which allowed for early mobilisation with adequate stability. This option can be considered when modern implants are not available.

Special concerns of the female athlete.

The majority of injuries sustained by female athletes are due to participation in sports rather than their sex. Anatomic, hormonal, and functional differences should be understood when treating the female athlete. Screening should be done for eating disorders and the female athlete triad. Female athletes have increased rates of injury to the anterior cruciate ligament and patellofemoral disorders compared with their male counterparts.

A surgical treatment for unstable osteochondritis dissecans lesions of the humeral capitellum in adolescent baseball players.

BACKGROUND: Various methods of surgical treatment for unstable osteochondritis dissecans lesions of the humeral capitellum have shown the potential to lead to osteoarthritis and poor functional results in throwing activities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of surgical treatment with pull-out wiring and bone grafting (as established by Kondo in 1989) in patients with unstable osteochondritis dissecans lesions of the humeral capitellum. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. METHODS: Eleven male baseball players (average age, 14.7 years) with unstable osteochondri

Tardy ulnar nerve palsy caused by cubitus varus deformity.

Fifteen patients with tardy ulnar nerve palsy caused by cubitus varus deformity were studied. All patients had a history of previous fracture of the humerus during childhood. The mean interval between fracture and onset of symptoms was 15 years. The severity of the palsy was classified as McGowan's grade I in 12 patients, grade II in 2 patients, and grade III in 1 patient. The mean carrying angle was -2 degrees before surgery. X-ray films showed a shallow ulnar nerve groove, a dysplastic humeral trochlea, medial shift of the ulna, and deformity of the medial epicondyle. The ulnar nerve was exp

Lengthening of the humerus using the Ilizarov technique. Description of the method and report of 43 cases.

From 1982 to 1986, 43 humeral lengthenings were performed on 29 patients using the Ilizarov technique. Diagnoses included achondroplasia, old septic arthritis, birth palsy, fracture, congenital shortening, and benign neoplasm. The achondroplastic patients (14) had bilateral lengthenings. There were 16 male and 13 female patients aged ten to 36 years (mean, 18 years). The total lengthening in each segment ranged from 5 to 16 cm (mean, 9 cm) and mean treatment time from four to 14 months (mean, eight months). The average follow-up time was 2.7 years (range, 0.5-5.5 years). Functional and aesthet

More Amputations and Open Fractures: Pediatric Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) Injuries Are More Severe Than All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Utility task vehicles (UTVs) differ from all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in that they are heavier, have larger engines, and have rollover protective structures. Despite their growing popularity for recreational use, there is emerging evidence that mutilating injuries may be higher in UTVs than ATVs, but this has not been evaluated in a pediatric-only population. This study seeks to determine differences in injury characteristics between vehicle types. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed at a level 1 pediatric trauma center, evaluating all patients <18 years old who pre
