A model of task-specific focal dystonia.

Task-specific focal dystonia is a task-specific movement disorder which manifests itself as a loss of voluntary motor control in extensively trained movements. The condition is most frequent in musicians. Until today, the aetiology of focal hand dystonia is not completely understood, but there is growing evidence for an abnormal cortical processing of sensory information, as well as degraded representation of motor functions. It was demonstrated that in the somatosensory cortex the topographical location of sensory inputs from individual fingers is corrupted. Occasionally, a change in sensory

Use of an artificial neural network for diagnosis of facial pain syndromes: an update.

BACKGROUND: Based on a classification scheme for facial pain syndromes and a binomial (yes/no) facial pain questionnaire, we previously reported on the ability of an artificial neural network (ANN) to recognize and correctly diagnose patients with different facial pain syndromes. OBJECTIVES: We now report on an updated questionnaire, the development of a secure web-based neural network application and details of ANNs trained to diagnose patients with different facial pain syndromes. METHODS: Online facial pain questionnaire responses collected from 607 facial pain patients (395 female, 65%,

Feed-forward hierarchical model of the ventral visual stream applied to functional brain image classification.

Functional brain imaging is a common tool in monitoring the progression of neurodegenerative and neurological disorders. Identifying functional brain imaging derived features that can accurately detect neurological disease is of primary importance to the medical community. Research in computer vision techniques to identify objects in photographs have reported high accuracies in that domain, but their direct applicability to identifying disease in functional imaging is still under investigation in the medical community. In particular, Serre et al. (: In: IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and P

Measures of angular spread and entropy for the detection of architectural distortion in prior mammograms.

PURPOSE: Architectural distortion is an important sign of early breast cancer. We present methods for computer-aided detection of architectural distortion in mammograms acquired prior to the diagnosis of breast cancer in the interval between scheduled screening sessions. METHODS: Potential sites of architectural distortion were detected using node maps obtained through the application of a bank of Gabor filters and linear phase portrait modeling. A total of 4,224 regions of interest (ROIs) were automatically obtained from 106 prior mammograms of 56 interval-cancer cases, including 301 true-po

Classification of electron sub-tomograms with neural networks and its application to template-matching.

Classification of electron sub-tomograms is a challenging task, due the missing-wedge and the low signal-to-noise ratio of the data. Classification algorithms tend to classify data according to their orientation to the missing-wedge, rather than to the underlying signal. Here we use a neural network approach, called the Kernel Density Estimator Self-Organizing Map (KerDenSOM3D), which we have implemented in three-dimensions (3D), also having compensated for the missing-wedge, and we comprehensively compare it to other classification methods. For this purpose, we use various simulated macromole

Category-specific visual agnosia: lesion to semantic memory versus extra-lesional variables in a case study and a connectionist model.

There is a current debate on the causes of category-specific agnosia. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of lesional and extra-lesional variables on object recognition. Extra-lesional variables, such as visual complexity or familiarity, are factors that influence recognition. Using a connectionist model based on study, we provide evidence that extra-lesional variables can yield dissociations in the recognition rate of different categories. Furthermore, it is shown that lesional and extra-lesional variables can interact (p < .01) when both are simultaneously modeled. Category-spec

[Neuroradiologic activation studies of cerebral organization of language capacities. A review of the literature].

Models on the cerebral organisation of speech and language capacities are predominantly based on lesion studies. Neuroradiological activation methods using positron emission or magnetic resonance tomography provide a further means to investigate brain-behaviour relationships. The present paper reviews the available data obtained with functional imaging during speech and language tasks. The classical connectionist model suggests several distinct language centres within the perisylvian area of the dominant hemisphere. Especially the processing of complex verbal stimuli yields haemodynamic and me

Computer-assisted Diagnosis of Breast Cancer by Cell Network Matrix Extraction and Multilayer Perceptron Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of breast cancer is based on identification of various morphologic features by histopathologic examination of the specimen. Ancillary immunohistochemical and molecular analyses provide additional information that is prognostic and guides therapy. Because of subjectivity in this approach, we sought to develop a computer model which could assist in differentiating normal or benign tissue from malignant breast carcinoma. METHODS: Cases of benign sclerosing adenosis (20) and high-grade invasive ductal carcinomas (20) of breast were retrieved and re-examined. Five images of th

Intensity-dependent tACS entrainment effects in a cortical microcircuit: a computational study.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a promising noninvasive technique for modulating disrupted neural oscillations in psychiatric disorders and enhancing cognitive functions. However, its efficacy remains debated, partly because neuronal morphology and other microscopic factors critically affect the response to external electric fields. To address this issue and investigate cellular- and network-level mechanisms underlying tACS-induced neural entrainment, we developed a cortical microcircuit model integrating realistic neuronal morphologies, synaptic connectivity, and intrin

Event-related potential dynamics of unilateral lower limb movement with functional connectivity analysis.

BACKGROUND: Locomotor lateralization represents a general evolutionary trait in primates and is particularly well documented in human upper limb movements. Whether a corresponding lateralization pattern exists in lower limb movements, however, has remained largely unexplored. NEW METHOD: To address this question, electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were recorded from 15 healthy volunteers while they performed instructed foot‑lift tasks under both motor execution (ME) and motor imagery (MI) conditions. The study characterized the frequency‑domain network representation of lower limb movement

Angstrom-fluidic chemical synapses for accurate cancer diagnosis.

Artificial chemical synapses, which specifically identify, transmit, and process molecular information, find promising applications in precision medical diagnosis, neural-electronic interface, and in-memory computing. However, to implement biomarker-triggered neuronal excitability modulation with artificial iontronic devices remains a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a capture DNA integrated angstrom-fluidic chemical synapse in which the intramembrane ionic conductance can be switched between excitatory and inhibitory states by specific DNA-target interactions on the outer membran

Rodents' visual gamma as a biomarker of pathological neural conditions.

Neural gamma oscillations (indicatively 30-100 Hz) are ubiquitous: they are associated with a broad range of functions in multiple cortical areas and across many animal species. Experimental and computational works established gamma rhythms as a global emergent property of neuronal networks generated by the balanced and coordinated interaction of excitation and inhibition. Coherently, gamma activity is strongly influenced by the alterations of synaptic dynamics which are often associated with pathological neural dysfunctions. We argue therefore that these oscillations are an optimal biomarker

Minimalist Deployment of Neural Network Equalizers in a Bandwidth-Limited Optical Wireless Communication System with Knowledge Distillation.

An equalizer based on a recurrent neural network (RNN), especially with a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (biGRU) structure, is a good choice to deal with nonlinear damage and inter-symbol interference (ISI) in optical communication systems because of its excellent performance in processing time series information. However, its recursive structure prevents the parallelization of the computation, resulting in a low equalization rate. In order to improve the speed without compromising the equalization performance, we propose a minimalist 1D convolutional neural network (CNN) equalizer, which

Validation and estimation of spleen volume via computer-assisted segmentation on clinically acquired CT scans.

Purpose: Deep learning is a promising technique for spleen segmentation. Our study aims to validate the reproducibility of deep learning-based spleen volume estimation by performing spleen segmentation on clinically acquired computed tomography (CT) scans from patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms. Approach: As approved by the institutional review board, we obtained 138 de-identified abdominal CT scans. A sum of voxel volume on an expert annotator's segmentations establishes the ground truth (estimation 1). We used our deep convolutional neural network (estimation 2) alongside traditional

Probing inter-areal computations with a two-photon holographic mesoscope.

Brain computation depends on intricately connected yet highly distributed neural networks. Owing to the absence of the requisite technologies, causally testing fundamental hypotheses on inter-areal processing has remained largely out of reach. Here, we developed a two-photon holographic mesoscope capable of simultaneously reading and writing neural activity patterns with near-single-cell resolution across large regions of the mouse cortex. We demonstrate the precise photoactivation of spatial and temporal sequences of neurons in one or multiple cortical areas while reading out the downstream e

Spontaneous high-frequency (10-80 Hz) oscillations during up states in the cerebral cortex in vitro.

High-frequency oscillations in cortical networks have been linked to a variety of cognitive and perceptual processes. They have also been recorded in small cortical slices in vitro, indicating that neuronal synchronization at these frequencies is generated in the local cortical circuit. However, in vitro experiments have hitherto necessitated exogenous pharmacological or electrical stimulation to generate robust synchronized activity in the beta/gamma range. Here, we demonstrate that the isolated cortical microcircuitry generates beta and gamma oscillations spontaneously in the absence of exte

A low power biomedical signal processor ASIC based on hardware software codesign.

A low power biomedical digital signal processor ASIC based on hardware and software codesign methodology was presented in this paper. The codesign methodology was used to achieve higher system performance and design flexibility. The hardware implementation included a low power 32bit RISC CPU ARM7TDMI, a low power AHB-compatible bus, and a scalable digital co-processor that was optimized for low power Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) calculations. The co-processor could be scaled for 8-point, 16-point and 32-point FFTs, taking approximate 50, 100 and 150 clock circles, respectively. The complete de
