Electrospun nanofibers - A promising solid in-situ gelling alternative for ocular drug delivery.

A serious problem of the treatment of eye diseases is the very short residence time of the drug. The majority of the drug is cleared within few seconds due to the poor capability of the eye to accommodate additional liquids. We developed a new ocular drug delivery system, which is applied in dry form and forms immediately a gel after administration. The system is based on gellan gum/pullulan electrospun nanofibers. The rheological behavior of the spinning solution was investigated followed by further characterization of the in situ formed gel. Three-dimensional X-ray imaging with nanometric re

Corrective Osteotomies of Phalangeal and Metacarpal Malunions Using Patient-Specific Guides: CT-Based Evaluation of the Reduction Accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical planning of corrective osteotomies is traditionally based on conventional radiographs and clinical findings. In the past 10 years, 3-dimensional (3D) preoperative planning approaches with patient-specific guides have been developed. However, the application of this technology to posttraumatic deformities of the metacarpals and phalangeal bones has not yet been investigated. Our goal was to evaluate the feasibility of the surgical application to the latter and to evaluate the extent and precision of correction. METHODS: We present results of 6 patients (8 osteotomies) trea

Modification of planned postoperative occlusion in orthognathic surgery, based on computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing-engineered preoperative surgical simulation.

In orthognathic surgery, it is important to have a planned postoperative occlusion. A 3-dimensional preoperative simulation, based on 3-dimensional optically scanned occlusion data, can predict how the planned postoperative occlusion will affect the maxilla-mandibular relationship that results from orthognathic surgery. In this study we modified the planned postoperative occlusion, based on computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing-engineered preoperative surgical simulations. This modification made it possible to resolve the facial asymmetry of the patient successfully with a simple

Printable carbon nanotube superplastics for thermal management.

While plastics are integral to modern life, their limitations in mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties hinder their use in advanced applications, particularly thermal management. We have developed a scalable in-situ nanotube-polymer fusion and hot-working process for mass-producing carbon nanotube superplastics (CNTSPs) designed to overcome these limitations. By integrating up to 59 wt% CNTs and inducing spontaneous fusion with polymer molecules while retaining the original long CNT length, we achieve enhanced CNT alignment and packing density. This unique structure yields CNTSPs with

3D-Printed Phase-Change Porous Monoliths for Adaptive Radiative Cooling with High Solar Reflectance and Latent Heat Buffering.

Passive daytime radiative cooling offers an energy-efficient pathway for zero-energy cooling of buildings, vehicles, and outdoor objects under direct sunlight. However, its practical deployment is hindered by limited cooling power and the risk of nighttime overcooling. Although incorporating phase-change materials provides latent heat buffering, achieving high solar reflectivity in such composites remains a challenge. Herein, we present a phase-change porous monolith fabricated by direct-ink-written 3D printing, enabling large-scale production, structural programmability, and adaptive radiativ

Creating an improved workflow for paper-based malaria diagnostics by integrating total lysis of whole blood.

Detection of parasite biomarkers is critical for diagnosis and treatment monitoring; however, proper analysis of whole blood samples typically requires red blood cell lysis. While lysis is easily achieved in laboratory environments, there is a clinical need for low-cost technology to collect, process, and analyze these samples in low-resource settings. Dried blood spot cards offer a simple way to microsample blood in these settings, but standard cards cannot perform sample preprocessing, including the required lysis step. To meet this need, we have developed a three-dimensional paper-based lys

Nature-inspired surface modification strategies for implantable devices.

Medical and implantable devices are essential instruments in contemporary healthcare, improving patient quality of life and meeting diverse clinical requirements. However, ongoing problems such as bacterial colonization, biofilm development, foreign body responses, and insufficient device-tissue adhesion hinder the long-term effectiveness and stability of these devices. Traditional methods to alleviate these issues frequently prove inadequate, necessitating the investigation of nature-inspired alternatives. Biomimetic surfaces, inspired by the chemical and physical principles found in biologic

Wallenberg Syndrome Secondary to Vertebrobasilar Aneurysm Associated With Subclavian Steal Syndrome.

Wallenberg syndrome, also known as lateral medullary syndrome, is a rare condition affecting the vertebrobasilar circulation, causing symptoms such as vertigo, nystagmus, dysarthria, and hemifacial weakness. Typically linked to ischemic strokes, it can also arise from vertebrobasilar aneurysms. In rare cases, subclavian steal syndrome (SSS), involving retrograde flow in the vertebral artery due to subclavian stenosis, complicates the picture, as observed in this case of a 66-year-old woman with both conditions and a vertebrobasilar aneurysm. This study was conducted at the Neurosurgery Departm

Super Water-Storage Self-Adhesive Gel for Solar Vapor Generation and Collection.

Water treatment consumes lots of energy from fossil fuels nowadays, and the emission of CO2 enhances the temperature on earth, resulting in more and more hazards. Thus, clean water production enabled by green energy without CO2 emission is attracting more and more attention. Herein, we propose a novel solar evaporation system achieving both solar evaporation and water storage with two different unique hydrogels based on a three-dimensional (3D) printing technique. The hydrogel absorber demonstrates an ultrahigh absorptance (98.2%) of solar light, while the water-storage hydrogel absorbs more t

Clinical Utility of an Exoskeleton Robot Using Three-Dimensional Scanner Modeling in Burn Patient: A Case Report.

Hands are the part of the body that are most commonly involved in burns, and the main complications are finger joint contractures and nerve injuries. Hypertrophic scarring cannot be avoided despite early management of acute hand burn injuries, and some patients may need the application of an exoskeleton robot to restore hand function. To do this, it is essential to individualize the customization of the robot for each patient. Three-dimensional (3D) technology, which is widely used in the field of implants, anatomical models, and tissue fabrication, makes this goal achievable. Therefore, this

Tracheal suspension by using 3-dimensional printed personalized scaffold in a patient with tracheomalacia.

The major methods are used to fix or stabilize the central airways and major bronchi with either anterior suspension and/or posterior fixation for severe tracheomalacia (TM). Many support biomaterials, like mesh and sternal plate, can be used in the surgery. But there are no specialized biomaterials for TM which must be casually fabricated by the doctors in operation. Three dimensional printing (3DP) has currently untapped potential to provide custom, protean devices for challenging and life-threatening disease processes. After meticulous design, we created a polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold fo

Virtual 3D Modeling of Airways in Congenital Heart Defects.

The involvement of the airway is not uncommon in the presence of complex cardiovascular malformations. In these cases, a careful inspection of the relationship between the airway and the vasculature is paramount to plan the surgical procedure. Three-dimensional printing enhanced the visualization of the cardiovascular structure. Unfortunately, IT does not allow to remove selected anatomy to improve the visualization of the surrounding ones. Computerized modeling has the potential to fill this gap by allowing a dynamic handling of different anatomies, increasing the exposure of vessels or bronc

Digital light processing 3D-printed PEGDA microneedle patches for sustained transdermal carbamazepine delivery.

Microneedles (MNs) have emerged as a promising platform for transdermal drug delivery by overcoming the barrier properties of the stratum corneum while minimizing pain and improving patient compliance. In this study, digital light processing (DLP) three-dimensional printing was employed to fabricate PEGDA-based MN arrays for the controlled transdermal delivery of carbamazepine (CBZ). The influence of UV light intensity, layer exposure time, post-curing temperature and exposure time on the printability and mechanical properties of printed PEGDA and PEGDA/PEG 200 formulations was systematically
