One half of the sprinting coin: the oxygen transport cascade of a 91-yr-old female world-record sprinter.

A 91-yr-old female set the W90+ world record in the 200-m sprint in 2024, surpassing her previous record by 1.13 s. This study characterized her cardiorespiratory fitness, skeletal muscle oxidative capacity, fiber-type distribution, capillarization, and satellite cells and compared these outcomes, where possible, to published reference data. Cardiorespiratory responses were assessed during a ramp cycling test to exhaustion, and muscle oxidative capacity (mV̇o2) was determined using near-infrared spectroscopy during repetitive arterial occlusions. Fiber-type distribution, cross-sectional area,

Differential effects and underlying mechanisms of voluntary, forced, and combined exercise on ameliorating Alzheimer's disease pathophenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common forms of neurodegenerative disorder characterized by extracellular Aβ accumulation and intracellular tau hyperphosphorylation. Currently, there are no effective therapeutic drugs available for AD. Regular exercise training has emerged as a promising physical intervention strategy for mitigating both the risk and progression of AD, but different types of exercise interventions show varied and conflicting results in AD treatment, with their differential effects and mechanisms still unelucidated. METHODS: Using an Aβ oligomer-induced

Nature-based and technology-assisted exercise for cognitive and mobility outcomes in older adults: a systematic review of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: Population aging and rising rates of mild cognitive impairment and mood symptoms have intensified interest in low-cost strategies to preserve brain health and independence. Physical activity is an established protective factor, but adherence to exercise programs remains suboptimal. Emerging work suggests that the exercise environment, including natural settings and immersive or interactive formats, may confer benefits beyond conventional indoor training. METHODS: We systematically searched major electronic databases for randomized trials in older adults that compared nature-based o

Dissecting the genetics of forage quality traits in soft red winter wheat in the U.S. southeast region.

Winter wheat plays a viable role in agriculture, not only as a primary grain crop but also as a valuable forage source that bridges fall-spring forage gaps in many regions, including the southeastern (SE) U.S. Despite its nutritive potential, genetic basis of forage-quality traits remains insufficiently understood, limiting breeding efforts for dual-purpose cultivars. This study aimed to dissect the genetic architecture of forage quality in 182 soft red winter wheat (SRWW) genotypes adapted to the SE U.S. using genome-wide association study (GWAS). Field experiments were carried out in randomi

A Novel Algorithm for Continuous Real-Time Cerebral Autoregulation Assessment Based on Mean Arterial Pressure and Cerebral Oxygen Saturation.

BACKGROUND: Continuous and real-time assessment of cerebral autoregulation can be of important clinical value to individualize blood pressure targets in perioperative settings. There is a high interindividual variability of the lower (LLA) and upper (ULA) limits of cerebral blood flow autoregulation, and exposure to blood pressure values outside of these limits has been associated with complications. We have developed a novel algorithm for continuous real-time assessment of cerebral autoregulation based on analysis of the dynamic interactions of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and near-infrared s

Relationship Between RAP and Multi-Modal Cerebral Physiological Dynamics in Moderate/Severe Acute Traumatic Neural Injury: A CAHR-TBI Multivariate Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The cerebral compliance (or compensatory reserve) index, RAP, is a critical yet underutilized physiological marker in the management of moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). While RAP offers promise as a continuous bedside metric, its broader cerebral physiological context remains partly understood. This study aims to characterize the burden of impaired RAP in relation to other key components of cerebral physiology. METHODS: Archived data from 379 moderate-to-severe TBI patients were analyzed using descriptive and threshold-based methods across three RAP states (impaire

Outcome measures in Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe intellectual disability, little to no expressive speech, visual and motor problems, emotional/behavioral challenges, and a tendency towards hyperphagia and weight gain. The characteristics of AS make it difficult to measure these children's functioning with standard clinical tests. Feasible outcome measures are needed to measure current functioning and change over time, in clinical practice and clinical trials. AIM: Our first aim is to assess the feasibility of several functional tests. We target

Cortical Mechanisms Underlying Effects of Repetitive Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation on Dynamic and Static Postural Control in Patients with Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain: A Double-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic non-specific low back pain (CNLBP) often experience impaired postural control, contributing to pain recurrence. Although repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) combined with core muscle training (CMT) could improve postural control, its neural mechanism remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the postural control-related cortical mechanism of the effect of rPMS on patients with CNLBP. METHODS: This unicentric, prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial was conducted in a public hospital from May to December 2023. A total of 4

Inefficient frontal and parietal brain activation during dual-task walking in a virtual environment in older adults.

Walking while performing an additional cognitive task (dual-task walking; DT walking) is a common yet highly demanding behavior in daily life. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that performance declines from single-task (ST) to DT conditions are accompanied by increased prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity. This increment is particularly pronounced in older adults and has been explained either by compensation, dedifferentiation, or inefficient task processing in fronto-parietal circuits. However, there is only limited evidence for the hypothesized fronto-parietal activity changes measured u

Dual-tDCS combined with sensorimotor training promotes upper limb function in subacute stroke patients: A randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Dual transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the bilateral primary somatosensory cortex (PSC) has potential benefits in stroke. In addition, compared with traditional rehabilitation training, sensorimotor training can significantly improve the sensorimotor function of patients. However, the efficacy of dual-tDCS combined with sensorimotor training in patients with subacute stroke is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether dual-tDCS may enhance the efficacy of sensorimotor training on the upper limb functions in patients with subacute stroke. In addition, this study aims

Targeted multidomain intervention for complex mTBI: protocol for a multisite randomized controlled trial in military-age civilians.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects ~18,000 military personnel each year, and although most will recover in 3-4 weeks, many experience persisting symptoms and impairment lasting months or longer. Current standard of care for U.S. military personnel with complex mTBI involves initial (<48 h) prescribed rest, followed by behavioral (e.g., physical activity, sleep regulation, stress reduction, hydration, nutrition), and symptom-guided management. There is growing agreement that mTBI involves different clinical profiles or subtypes that require a comprehensive multidomain evalua

Frequency-specific functional connectivity related to the rehabilitation task of stroke patients.

PURPOSES: Stroke survivors suffering from deficits in motor control typically show persistent motor symptoms and limited functional abilities, which affect their functional independence in daily life. Active rehabilitation training is commonly applied for stroke patients to recover from motor dysfunction. The global connectivity reflects the synchronization of cardiac and respiratory activities in the cerebral regions. However, the understanding of the patterns of frequency-specific global connectivity (GC) and functional connectivity (FC) when performing active rehabilitation training is stil
