BACKGROUND: Current interventions against malaria have significantly reduced the number of people infected and the number of deaths. Concerns about emerging resistance of both mosquitoes and parasites to intervention have been raised, and questions remain about how best to generate wider knowledge of the underlying evolutionary processes. The pedagogical and research principles of evolutionary medicine may provide an answer to this problem.
METHODS: Eight programme managers and five academic researchers were interviewed by telephone or videoconference to elicit their first-hand views and expe

Mosquito-transmitted alphaviruses causing human rheumatic disease are globally distributed and include chikungunya virus, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, Sindbis virus, o'nyong-nyong virus and Mayaro virus. These viruses cause endemic disease and, occasionally, large epidemics; for instance, the 2004-2011 chikungunya epidemic resulted in 1.4-6.5 million cases, with imported cases reported in nearly 40 countries. The disease is usually self-limiting and characterized by acute and chronic symmetrical peripheral polyarthralgia-polyarthritis, with acute disease usually including fever, myal

A marketing company conducting a consumer omnibus survey (COS) in April 2000 was paid to include questions about household ownership of mosquito nets. At the time of the survey, which involved 5018 respondents, most and perhaps all of the nets owned by the respondents would have been untreated, as a product for net treatment was then virtually unavailable. Sampling was conducted in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Core questions were asked about socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and commissioned questions were asked about household net ownership, the

Great scourge of poor countries, malaria is the most important tropical parasitic disease. It is responsible for a large number of deaths in concerned countries and represents a real danger for travellers going to endemic regions. So, prophylactic measures are essential. On the one hand protective measures against mosquito bites, by wearing covering clothes, by using repellents and bed net (eventually impregnated with insecticide) will be useful. On the other hand, chemoprophylaxis is most often necessary, adapted to the possibility of chloroquine resistant P. falciparum, to the length or cond

A survey was conducted to identify socioeconomic conditions and attitudes towards household prevention of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Corte de Pedra, located in the county of Tancredo Neves, an endemic region in southern Bahia, Brazil. A questionnaire was applied in July 1997, focusing on social and economic variables, habits, and attitudes towards prevention of arthropod bites. All families (100%) living in the study area were surveyed, comprising 168 households with 851 individuals. Approximately 66.7% of the families earned up to one minimum wage, supporting an average of 5.1 reside

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a Flavivirus that has spread globally since its initial reporting. Transmitted to humans via multiple mosquito species, its typical symptoms (e.g., Guillain-Barre syndrome [GBS] and neonatal microcephaly) pose severe public health challenges. Based on existing research, the pathogenic characteristics of ZIKV are largely shaped by host molecular pathways, endowing the virus with an enhanced ability toward specific host cell types. On the other hand, ZIKV achieves intracellular survival and increased pathogenicity by evading the human immune system. Host innate immune respon

Infection with malaria parasites continues to be a major global public health issue. While current control measures have enabled a significant decrease in morbidity and mortality over the last 20 years, additional tools will be required if we are to progress toward malaria parasite eradication. Malaria vaccine research has focused on the development of subunit vaccines; however, more recently, interest in whole-parasite vaccines has reignited. Whole-parasite vaccines enable the presentation of a broad repertoire of antigens to the immune system, which limits the impact of antigenic polymorphis

BACKGROUND: Dengue is an arthropod-borne viral disease responsible for approximately 400 million infections annually; the only available method of prevention is vector control. It has been previously demonstrated that insecticide treated curtains (ITCs) can lower dengue vector infestations in and around houses. As part of a larger trial examining whether ITCs could reduce dengue transmission in Iquitos, Peru, the objective of this study was to characterize the participants' experience with the ITCs using qualitative methods.
METHODS: Knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) surveys (at basel

This review focuses on arborviral infections associated with California serocomplex (Bunyaviridae, Orthobunyavirus). Results of relevant eco-epidemiological and clinical studies in Russia are presented suggesting the ubiquitious nature of diseases caused by viruses of the California encephalitis serocomplex (Inko, Tahyna, Snowshoe Hare). The etiologic structure of these diseases in taiga and mixed woods of the European part and Western Siberia is dominated by the Inco virus and in southern regions by Tahina. The diseases have a well apparent seasonal pattern (July-August) in agreement with the

Atriplex halimus is traditionally used in folk medicine for the treatment of skin infections, inflammation, and parasitic disorders. The aerial parts of A. halimus were extracted with 70% methanol and fractionated into dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (BuOH), and aqueous fractions. Comprehensive UPLC/MS profiling identified seventy-eight secondary metabolites, predominantly flavonoids and their derivatives, followed by triterpenoids and minor constituents. The antimicrobial activities of the extract and its fractions were assessed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escher

Background: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a livestock-amplified, mosquito-borne zoonosis caused by Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV). Continental Europe has no established RVFV transmission, but a rare introduction could have major consequences if susceptible ruminants amplify infection before detection. Methodology: This critical narrative review synthesizes 69 scientific and institutional sources identified through structured PubMed/MEDLINE and Europe PMC searches, citation verification, and qualitative appraisal. Findings: European preparedness should distinguish probability from impact and weigh

Despite previous decline of malaria in Ethiopia, an outbreak in Dire Dawa in 2022 implicated invasive vector An. stephensi as responsible. The transmission of Plasmodium by invasive An. stephensi raises questions about the molecular basis of compatibility, and the origin of the Plasmodium being transmitted. The Plasmodium P47 gene is a parasite-vector interaction gene in Anopheles , and along with corresponding mosquito P47 receptor ( P47Rec ), can be critical in establishment of Plasmodium infections in anophelines. Here, we analyzed P47 and P47Rec sequences to determine the origin of Plasmod

Arboviruses pose significant public health challenges globally, particularly in Pakistan, where deforestation, climate change, urbanization, inadequate sanitation, and natural disasters have all contributed to the spread of mosquito-borne flavivirus diseases like dengue fever. The lack of a thorough national surveillance system has made it difficult to determine the extent and distribution of these diseases. Concern has been raised by recent outbreaks of West Nile virus (WNV) and chikungunya (CHIKV) epidemics, which may lead to Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreaks in the future. Additionally, hospital-

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic flavivirus that circulates primarily within animal populations and occasionally spills over to humans, causing severe neurological disease. While humans are terminal hosts, veterinary species such as pigs and birds play essential roles in viral amplification and maintenance, making JEV fundamentally a veterinary infectious disease with zoonotic potential. This review summarizes the current understanding of JEV transmission dynamics from a veterinary and ecological perspective, emphasizing the roles of amplifying hosts and animal su

AIM: Interpersonal sensitivity and mistrust are the main characteristics of cluster A personality disorders (CAPD) which might be due to the high accessibility to negative suggestions from environments. Yet the exact associations between hypnotic suggestibility and their personality disorder functioning styles remain unclear.
METHODS: We invited 36 patients with CAPD and 115 healthy volunteers to undergo the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale: Form C (SHSS:C) and Parker Personality Measure (PERM).
RESULTS: Compared to controls; patients scored higher on PERM paranoid; schizoid; schizotyp

In February 2016, the World Health Organization declared Zika virus (ZIKV) infection a public health emergency of international concern because it caused congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). The CZS is considered a specific pattern of birth defects caused by ZIKV infection, which is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The CZS clinical manifestations are broad and nonspecific, including microcephaly, subcortical calcifications, ocular alterations, congenital contractures, early hypertonia, and pyramidal as well as extrapyramidal symptoms. The ZIKV has gained great importance becau

In South-East Asia (SEA), there has been an increase in the trend of detected and reported cases of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria in the last few decades. This higher transmission rate within SEA countries is attributed to the distribution of the Macaque, banded leaf monkeys, and Anopheles mosquito in this region. This study aims to propose a concept that highlights the integration of vulnerability factors to P. knowlesi malaria infection. The relevant literature on the vulnerability factors of P. knowlesi was reviewed. Any theories and models that could be integrated to support the factors were
