The whale binaural rings experiment: Long-range acoustic monitoring of North Atlantic right whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Effective real-time monitoring of baleen whales over broad areas was assessed using two 20-m circular hydrophone arrays designed for detecting and localizing North Atlantic right whale (NARW) upcalls. The system was deployed over a 24-d period in August 2021 to monitor a ∼80-km-wide trough heavily frequented by NARWs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Key functional parameters throughout the processing chain were estimated from in situ conditions and integrated with numerical simulations. The spatiotemporal performances of the system-using deep-learning neural networks upcall detection and bearing-c

A 1D Snoring Waveform and 2D Composite Acoustic Feature Graph-Based Multi-Modal Fusion Network for Obstructive Sites Recognition.

As a critical factor in diagnostic work-up and treatment decision-making process of sleep-related breathing disorders, accurate localization of obstructive sites in the upper airway is in dire need. Snoring, as a dynamic acoustic signal, carries informative information relating to the sites and degree of obstruction in the upper airway, offering a non-invasive, cost-effective solution for obstructive sites recognition. However, most of existing snoring-based methods for recognizing obstructive sites only involve limited information (either mainly concentrated on traditional acoustic characteri

Peaks2Image: Reconstructing fMRI maps from stereotactic coordinates to enhance cognitive meta-analysis.

To integrate novel findings and reach a consensus on the neural correlates of cognitive functions, human neuroscientists have relied heavily on the literature to formulate, validate, or refine hypotheses. Since thousands of publications have reported the coordinates of regions identified in brain mapping, the community has largely performed meta-analyses based on these coordinates. A known problem with coordinate-based meta-analyses is that they rely on limited information from each publication, so terms appearing in few publications are not reliably mapped. Recently, the use of public images

PVADet: fast patient-ventilator asynchrony detection on waveforms.

Patient-ventilator asynchrony (PVA) is a common and critically import clinical problem in patients receiving mechanical ventilation. However, PVAs are often underrecognized, underestimated and delayed, and there has been minimal success in automating their detection. In this study, we develop an efficient and fast end-to-end model to recognize PVAs on ventilator waveforms: running the model costs 106.5ms on CPUs and 7.8ms on GPUs. We propose label striping and stripe-mask encoding for efficient multi-class multi-target detecting. The model innovatively integrates causal convolutional, depth-wi

Biomimetic ferroelectric-semiconductor transistor enables neuronal multisensory integration.

Human brain seamlessly integrates multisensory stimuli to synthesize complementary information for enhanced perceptions, depending on neural principles of superadditivity, inverse effectiveness, and temporal congruency. Replicating multisensory integration in artificial intelligences has remained challenging due to the inefficiency of algorithmic fusions and the absence of hardware-native mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate biomimetic audiovisual integration at the device level of Bi2O2Se ferroelectric-semiconductor field-effect transistors (FeS-FETs) through multiphysics coupling. Our FeS-FETs s

Contrastive learning to fine-tune feature extraction models for the visual cortex.

Predicting the neural response to natural images in the visual cortex requires extracting relevant features from the images and relating those feature to the observed responses. In this work, we optimize the feature extraction in order to maximize the information shared between the image features and the neural response across voxels in a given region of interest (ROI) extracted from the BOLD signal measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We adapt contrastive learning (CL) to fine-tune a convolutional neural network, which was pretrained for image classification, such that a

MMFVS-Net: A triple-symmetric cross-attention network for multimodal optical image fusion and high-accuracy virtual staining of breast cancer tissues.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Virtual staining is based on label-free imaging technology and deep learning, which enables the efficient and non-destructive generation of virtual stained images with effects similar to those of traditional pathological staining, thus holding great application potential in future clinical medical practice. However, the information provided by a single imaging technology is limited, which is insufficient to support high-accuracy virtual staining. METHODS: This study took breast cancer tissue as the research object. Bright-field, auto-fluorescence and phase contrast i

Multi-fidelity Monte Carlo fusion for BNCT dose calculation using a dual-branch network.

BACKGROUND: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a binary radiotherapy that selectively kills tumor cells. Its clinical implementation relies on Monte Carlo (MC)-based treatment planning systems, which are time-consuming and limit clinical workflow efficiency. PURPOSE: To address this limitation, we propose a Multi-Fidelity MC-based Dual-Branch Network (MFMC-DBN) that leverages complementary information from low- and high-fidelity MC simulations through dual-branch feature fusion, enabling accurate and efficient BNCT dose calculation. METHODS: The model was trained, validated, and tested

Semi-supervised learning for automated perineural invasion detection in multi-organ H&E whole slide images.

MOTIVATION: Perineural invasion (PNI) is an important pathological phenotype associated with poor prognosis in multiple malignancies. The primary detection method is visual inspection of whole slide images (WSIs), which is labor-intensive, time-consuming, subjective, and prone to high inter-observer variability. Developing reliable, accurate deep learning models for PNI detection is constrained by the lack of pixel-level annotated WSIs. RESULTS: We evaluated four backbone architectures and two different approaches to improve PNI detection in a multi-organ dataset of colon, prostate, and pancr

A deep learning-based multi-view approach to automatic 3D landmarking and deformity assessment of lower limb.

Anatomical Landmark detection in CT-Scan images is widely used in the identification of skeletal disorders. However, the traditional process of manually detecting anatomical landmarks, especially in three dimensions, is both time-consuming and prone to human errors. We propose a novel, deep-learning-based approach to automatic detection of 3D landmarks in CT images of the lower limb. We generate multiple view renderings of the scanned limb and then integrate them, using a pyramid-style convolutional neural network, to build a 3D model of the bone and to determine the spatial coordinates of the

OCTSeg-UNeXt: an ultralight hybrid Conv-MLP network for retinal pathology segmentation in point-of-care OCT imaging.

To enable efficient and accurate retinal lesion segmentation on resource-constrained point-of-care Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) systems, we propose OCTSeg-UNeXt, an ultralight hybrid Convolution-Multilayer Perceptron (Conv-MLP) network optimized for OCT image analysis. Built upon the UNeXt architecture, our model integrates a Depthwise-Augmented Scale Context (DASC) module for adaptive multi-scale feature aggregation, and a Group Fusion Bridge (GFB) to enhance information interaction between the encoder and decoder. Additionally, we employ a deep supervision strategy during training to i

Self-supervised autoencoder network for robust heart rate extraction from noisy photoplethysmogram: Applying blind source separation to biosignal analysis.

Biosignals can be viewed as mixtures measuring particular physiological events, and blind source separation (BSS) aims to extract underlying source signals from mixtures. This paper proposes a self-supervised multi-encoder autoencoder (MEAE) to separate heartbeat-related source signals from photoplethysmogram (PPG), enhancing heart rate (HR) detection in noisy PPG data. The MEAE is trained on PPG signals from a large open polysomnography database without any pre-processing or data selection. The trained network is then applied to a noisy PPG dataset collected during the daily activities of nin

PepTCR-Net: prediction of multi-class antigen peptides by T-cell receptor sequences with deep learning.

Predicting T-cell receptor (TCR) recognizing antigen peptides is crucial for understanding the immune system and developing new treatments for cancer, infectious and autoimmune diseases. As experimental methods for identifying TCR-antigen recognition are expensive and time-consuming, machine-learning approaches are increasingly used. However, existing computational tools often struggle with generalization due to limited data and challenges in acquiring true non-recognition pairs and rarely integrate multiple biological features into unified frameworks. To address these challenges, we propose a

Deep Learning-Based Event Counting for Apnea-Hypopnea Index Estimation Using Recursive Spiking Neural Networks.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a novel method for improved screening of sleep apnea in home environments, focusing on reliable estimation of the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) without the need for highly precise event localization. METHODS: RSN-Count is introduced, a technique leveraging Spiking Neural Networks to directly count apneic events in recorded signals. This approach aims to reduce dependence on the exact time-based pinpointing of events, a potential source of variability in conventional analysis. RESULTS: RSN-Count demonstrates a superior ability to quantify apneic events (AHI MAE ) compared t

Alzheimer's disease prediction using 3D-CNNs: Intelligent processing of neuroimaging data.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe neurological illness that demolishes memory and brain functioning. This disease affects an individual's capacity to work, think, and behave. The proportion of individuals suffering from AD is rapidly increasing. It flatters a leading cause of disability and impacts millions of people worldwide. Early detection reduces disease expansion, provides more effective therapies, and leads to better results. However, predicting AD at an early stage is complex since its clinical symptoms match with normal aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and neurodegenerative
