Integrative osteochondral repair is a useful strategy for cartilage-defect repair. To mimic the microenvironment, it is necessary that scaffolds effectively mimic the extracellular matrix of natural cartilage and subchondral bone. In this study, biomimetic osteochondral scaffolds containing an oriented cartilage layer, a compact layer, and a three-dimensional (3D)-printed core-sheath structured-bone layer were developed. The oriented cartilage layer was designed to mimic the structural and material characteristics of native cartilage tissue and was fabricated with cartilage matrix-chitosan mat

BACKGROUND: There is a desire in orthopaedics to have soft tissue, particularly tendon, grow into metallic implants. With the introduction of three-dimensional (3D) printed porous metal implants, we hypothesized that tendons could directly attach to the implants. However, the effects of the porous metal structure on tissue growth and penetration into the pores are unknown. Using a rat model, we investigated the effect of pore size on tendon repair fixation using 3D printed titanium implants.
METHODS: There were three experimental groups of eight Sprague Dawley rats (n = 24) plus control (n =

Contact-free and object-agnostic three-dimensional (3D) rotation remains a challenge at both the micro and nanoscale, with broad relevance to advanced imaging, biology, microrobotics, and materials science. Specifically, precise 3D rotation is desirable in diffusion-suppressing environments, where conventional micromanipulation methods fail. Here we introduce an opto-thermoviscous strategy that scans a focused laser spot within a two-dimensional plane to robustly generate 3D helical thermoviscous flows (TVFs) within highly viscous media. We further report on the discovery of opto-hydrodynamic

Two-photon lithography (TPL) enables high-resolution fabrication of complex microarchitectures but remains fundamentally constrained in realizing truly arbitrary three-dimensional geometries due to the lack of effective microscale support-removal strategies. Here, we report a universal sacrificial-support-assisted TPL approach enabled by a newly developed water-soluble (W-S) photoresist. The W-S photoresist integrates high printing resolution with rapid dissolution, allowing sacrificial scaffolds to be completely removed in mild aqueous media within 10 min. To the best of our knowledge, this r

Background and Objectives: Orbital exenteration performed for advanced malignancies often results in complex defects that are difficult to reconstruct, particularly in patients treated with adjuvant radiotherapy who subsequently develop osteoradionecrosis. This study describes the preliminary results of a surgical technique for secondary orbital reconstruction using a combined scalp flap and temporalis muscle flap (TMF), referred to as the "Pacman flap with tongue," performed prior to prosthetic rehabilitation. Materials and Methods: Five elderly patients with multiple comorbidities and osteor

The regeneration of complex tissues demands advanced scaffolds that offer biomimetic support and tissue-specific bioactive guidance. However, the materials in clinic face big challenges with immune rejection, limited donors, and unsatisfactory inductive activity. Fortunately, cellulose-based scaffolds have risen as a leading sustainable platform, considering their natural abundance, inherent biocompatibility, and highly tunable properties. This review comprehensively presented their evolution from rational design to potential clinical application. The primary cellulose sources and key detailed

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has emerged as a promising material for bone substitution; however, its limited osseointegration hinders its clinical applications. This research employs a porous structural design alongside surface modification techniques to improve the osseointegration properties of PEEK. Porous PEEK scaffolds were fabricated via 3D printing technology, followed by the application of a stable coating of Yoda1-loaded methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) on their surfaces. After modification, the hydrophilicity of the PEEK scaffolds was considerably improved, and the GelMA coating facilita

Self-healing hydrogels have great application potential in the field of bio-sensors due to their self-healing, flexibility and excellent tensile properties. However, most hydrogel-based sensors are processed by template method, which is unable to fabricate complex three-dimensional (3D) structures, and limits the development of hydrogel-based sensor devices. A simple yet efficient one-pot method was proposed to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol/sodium tetraborate/sodium alginate hydrogel inks (SPB), also a fabricating process of self-healing hydrogel based on 3D printing technology has been proposed

The growth plate (GP) is a cartilaginous region situated between the epiphysis and metaphysis at the end of the immature long bone, which is susceptible to mechanical damage because of its vulnerable structure. Due to the limited regeneration ability of the GP, current clinical treatment strategies (e.g., bone bridge resection and fat engraftment) always result in bone bridge formation, which will cause length discrepancy and angular deformity, thus making satisfactory outcomes difficult to achieve. The introduction of cartilage repair theory and cartilage tissue engineering technology may enc

BACKGROUND: Surgical navigation systems have been used increasingly in guiding complex ear, nose, and throat surgery. Although these are helpful, they are only beneficial intraoperatively; thus, the novice surgeon will not have the preoperative training or exposure that can be vital in complex procedures. In addition, there is a lack of reliable models to give surgeons hands-on training in performing such procedures.
METHODS: A technique using an industrial rapid prototyping process by three-dimensional (3D) printing was developed, from which accurate spatial models of the nasal cavity, paran

The rising prevalence of high throughput screening and the general inability of (1) two dimensional (2D) cell culture and (2) in vitro release studies to predict in vivo neurobiological and pharmacokinetic responses in humans has led to greater interest in more realistic three dimensional (3D) benchtop platforms. Advantages of 3D human cell culture over its 2D analogue, or even animal models, include taking the effects of microgeometry and long-range topological features into consideration. In the era of personalized medicine, it has become increasingly valuable to screen candidate molecules a

Background and Objectives: Three-dimensional printing is increasingly used to fabricate dental restorations; however, limited evidence is available on the mechanical performance and fracture behavior of printable resin materials used for endocrown restorations. Fracture load alone may not fully describe material performance, particularly when brittle or defect-sensitive failure occurs. This in vitro study aimed to compare the fracture resistance, Weibull parameters, experimental Mode I fracture toughness parameter, and failure patterns of three 3D-printed resin materials used for endocrown res

The growth plate is a cartilaginous tissue with three distinct zones. Resident chondrocytes are highly organized in a columnar structure, which is critical for the longitudinal growth of immature long bones. Once injured, the growth plate may potentially be replaced by bony bar formation and, consequently, cause limb abnormalities in children. It is well-known that the essential step in growth plate repair is the remolding of the organized structure of chondrocytes. To achieve this, we prepared an anatomy-inspired bionic Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffold with a stratified structure using thr

PURPOSE: Porcelain-veneered zirconia crowns (PVZCs) provide the opacity required to mask discolored substrates and translucency needed for a natural appearance. Although in vitro studies have demonstrated that three‑dimensionally (3D)‑printed textures on zirconia cores can strengthen the zirconia-porcelain bond and thereby may reduce chipping incidence of PVZCs, their clinical performance remains to be verified. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to preliminarily investigate the influence of 3D-printed textures of zirconia cores on the clinical performance of PVZCs, particularly
