Background/Objectives: Soil microbiomes in agroecosystems are natural reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), creating conditions for horizontal gene transfer (HGT) to clinically relevant bacteria. Southern West Siberia-a globally significant grain-producing region-lacks metagenomic characterization of its soil resistome. This study aimed to establish the first baseline profile of resistome and mobilome composition for West Siberian agricultural soils. Methods: Twelve composite soil samples were collected from agroecosystems under seven crop types a

INTRODUCTION: Control of Stegomyia aegypti (St. aegypti), a major vector of arboviruses, has been increasingly challenged by insecticide resistance, driven by genetic, metabolic, behavioral, and environmental factors. While extensively studied in other contexts, the role of gut microbiota in insecticide resistance remains largely unexplored. Therefore, this study assessed the α-cypermethrin susceptibility status of St. aegypti from Puducherry by characterizing the culturable gut bacteria from resistant and susceptible mosquito populations and evaluating their role in mediating resistance.

UNLABELLED: Lactic acid bacteria can use an electron transport system to pass reducing equivalents to extracellular mediators. This redox flexibility decouples carbon and electron balances and presents the opportunity to use electrodes to engineer fermentations. We show that growth with an anode may be a two-edged sword for the fitness of the model lactic acid bacterium Lactiplantibacillus plantarum grown in a chemically defined medium supplemented with quinones, depending on substrate and cultivation regime. In batch culture on glucose, the anode slows growth despite yielding an over four-fol

The antagonistic relationship between bacteria and bacteriophages (phages) drives genetic changes that result in phage resistance, making it important to understand the dynamics of resistance acquisition in both natural microbial communities and therapeutic contexts. We developed a generalized Lotka-Volterra model describing the interaction among phage-susceptible bacteria, phage-resistant bacteria, and a lytic phage, incorporating asymmetric interspecific competition and partial phage resistance. The model was fitted to growth data from four bacterial strains-Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA103 and

BACKGROUND: Ureibacillus massiliensis (U. massiliensis), a Gram-positive bacterium belonging to the phylum Bacillota, has undergone two significant taxonomic revisions before being classified under the Ureibacillus. Although previous studies have highlighted its promising applications in industrial production and environmental remediation, the lack of genomic information has limited the research on its functional mechanisms and industrial development.
RESULT: This study successfully isolated and identified a novel strain of U. massiliensis through whole-genome sequencing, constructing a compl

Excessive oil addition can easily result in decreased disease resistance in broilers, a drop in meat quality, and disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is an important bioactive component of tea and has been shown to have promising effects on the metabolism of nutrients. This study was aimed at investigating the impact of EGCG supplementation through a high-fat diet (HFD) on production performance, meat quality, lipid metabolism and the influence of intestinal flora in broiler chickens. During the experimental phase, the broilers were segregated into three

Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a poorly understood symptom complex that affects 40% of females over the age of 40, with clinical features including urinary urgency and incontinence. In addition to inflammation, oxidative stress, nerve damage and reduced blood flow, alterations in the urinary microbiome (urobiome), specifically in bladder bacterial diversity, have been reported to be associated with OAB. Bladder bacteria are members of the urobiome along with viruses, archaea, fungi, and protozoans. The urobiome metabolism, particularly in relationship to host complex sugars (glycans), ha

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that predominantly affects sebaceous gland-rich areas, such as the scalp, face, and chest. It is clinically characterized by erythematous plaques and scaling. Although its pathogenesis is multifactorial, involving genetic predisposition, microbial colonization, and environmental triggers, the psychosocial dimensions of SD remain insufficiently explored. Given the chronic and visible nature of the disease, psychological factors like anxiety and personality traits may shape patients' perception of disease burden and t

Boar taint is an unpleasant odour and flavour released during heat treatment of pork from uncastrated male pigs. The two main compounds responsible for boar taint are androstenone and skatole. Androstenone is a steroid hormone formed in the testis during sexual maturity. Skatole is a product of microbial degradation of the amino acid tryptophan in the hindgut of pigs. Both of these compounds are lipophilic, which means that they can be deposited in adipose tissue. Several studies have reported heritability estimates for their deposition from medium (skatole) to high magnitudes (androstenone).

The characteristic maximum lifespan varies enormously across animal species from a few hours to hundreds of years. This argues that maximum lifespan, and the ageing process that itself dictates lifespan, are to a large extent genetically determined. Although controversial, this is supported by firm evidence that semelparous species display evolutionarily programmed ageing in response to reproductive and environmental cues. Parabiosis experiments reveal that ageing is orchestrated systemically through the circulation, accompanied by programmed changes in hormone levels across a lifetime. This i

Gut microbes can modulate almost all aspects of host physiology throughout life. As a result, specific microbial interventions are attracting considerable attention as potential therapeutic strategies for treating a variety of conditions. Nonetheless, little is known about the mechanisms through which many of these microbes work. Recently, we and others have found that the commensal bacterium Limosilactobacillus reuteri (formerly Lactobacillus reuteri) reverses social deficits in several mouse models (genetic, environmental, and idiopathic) for neurodevelopmental disorders in a vagus nerve-, o

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters represent one of the largest protein superfamilies. Functionally diverse, ABC transporters have been implicated in many aspects of microbial physiology. The genome of the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans encodes 54 putative ABC transporters and most of them remain uncharacterized. In a previous genetic screen for fungal regulators of phagocytosis, we identified an uncharacterized gene, CNAG_06909, that modulates host interactions. This gene encoded a half-size ABC transporter of the PDR-type, and phenotypic studies of a strain with this gene

Pathogenic Leptospira, the causative agents of leptospirosis, comprise >200 serotypes (called serovars). Most have a restricted reservoir-host range, and some, e.g., serovar Copenhageni, are cosmopolitan and of public health importance owing to their propensity to produce severe, fatal disease in humans. Available serotyping approaches-such as multilocus sequence typing, core genome sequence typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and the cross-agglutination absorption test-are tedious and expensive, and require isolation of the organisms in culture media-a protracted and incredibly ineffici

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Children with CF commonly suffer from recurrent and persistent pulmonary tract infections caused by diverse bacterial pathogens. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility, and biofilm formation of bacterial isolates in pediatric patients with CF. The study population of this cross-sectional study included 8,908 children suspected to have CF by clinical manifestations from March 2015 to August 2017 who were referred to the Tehran Pediatric Central Hospital, Iran. Some bacterial pathogens utilize cell-cell communication systems, such as quorum sensing (QS), to coordinate genetic programs during host colonization and infection. The human-restricted pathosymbiont Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus [GAS]) uses the Rgg2/Rgg3 QS system to modify the bacterial surface, enabling biofilm formation and lysozyme resistance. Here, we demonstrate that innate immune cell responses to GAS are substantially altered by the QS status of the bacteria. We found that macrophage activation, stimulated by multiple agonists and assessed by cytokine production and N

The updated "Unifying Hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease" (AD) is described that links all the observed neuropathology in AD brain (i.e., plaques, tangles, and cerebrovascular amyloid deposits), as well as inflammation, genetic factors (involving ApoE), "AD-in-a-Dish" studies, beta-amyloid protein (Aβ) as a microbial peptide; and theories that bacteria, gut microflora, gingivitis and viruses all play a role in the cause of AD. The common link is the early accumulation of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) and heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). HS GAG accumulation and/or decreased HS

BACKGROUND: Viruses influence global patterns of microbial diversity and nutrient cycles. Though viral metagenomics (viromics), specifically targeting dsDNA viruses, has been critical for revealing viral roles across diverse ecosystems, its analyses differ in many ways from those used for microbes. To date, viromics benchmarking has covered read pre-processing, assembly, relative abundance, read mapping thresholds and diversity estimation, but other steps would benefit from benchmarking and standardization. Here we use in silico-generated datasets and an extensive literature survey to evaluate

BACKGROUND: Africa has one of the highest incidences of gonorrhea. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is gaining resistance to most of the available antibiotics, compromising treatment across the world. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is an efficient way of predicting AMR determinants and their spread in the population. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing technologies like Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) have helped in the generation of longer reads of DNA in a shorter duration with lower cost. Increasing accuracy of base-calling algorithms, high throughput, error-correction strategies, and ease o

BACKGROUND: There is a growing interest in the role of gut bacteria in a number of diseases and an emerging hypothesis that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is triggered by microbial dysbiosis in genetically susceptible individuals. Currently, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is utilized for the treatment of Clostridium difficile colitis. Data on the efficacy of FMT for IBD are mixed, but patients are interested in its use for the treatment of IBD. We sought to describe the use of FMT (self or medical professional administered) in individuals with IBD using IBD Partners, an Internet-base
