Antibacterial and osteogenic properties of chitosan-polyethylene glycol nanofibre-coated 3D printed scaffold with vancomycin and insulin-like growth factor-1 release for bone repair.

3D printing, as a layer-by-layer manufacturing technique, enables the customization of tissue engineering scaffolds. Surface modification of biomaterials is a beneficial approach to enhance the interaction with living cells and tissues. In this research, a polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol scaffold containing 30 % bredigite nanoparticles (PLA/PEG/B) was fabricated utilizing fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. To modify the surface properties and facilitate the loading and release of therapeutics, the scaffold was coated with chitosan-polyethylene glycol (CS-PEG) nanofibers incorpora

Additive manufacturing of silicon nitride fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone composites with enhanced mechanical strength and multifunctional bioactivity for load-bearing bone defect repair.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is increasingly applied in bone defect repair due to its excellent biocompatibility and absence of artifact formation. However, the bio-inertness and inadequate mechanical properties of untreated PEEK remain significant challenges for PEEK-based implants. Hence, this study prepares a series of silicon nitride (Si3N4) fiber-reinforced PEEK composite porous scaffolds using twin-screw melt mixing-extrusion and material extrusion 3D printing. Comprehensive evaluations assess the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, osteogenic differentiation, angiogenesis activiti

Guidewire Manipulation Based on Establishment of Stereo Perception in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Traditional percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) relies on two-dimensional X-ray imaging, but this does not allow depth perception and complicates precise manipulation of the guidewire. Our purpose was to develop a novel method for guidewire manipulation by establishing stereoscopic perception in coronary angiography (CAG), as described in our previous study, and thereby improve the precision and success rate of PCI. METHODS: Based on establishment of stereo perception in CAG, we used digital subtraction angiography (DSA) with gantry rotation and simulation with UG NX software

E-jet 3D printed aligned nerve guidance conduits incorporated with decellularized extracellular matrix hydrogel encapsulating extracellular vesicles for peripheral nerve repair.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) as a common clinical issue that presents significant challenges for repair. Factors such as donor site morbidity from autologous transplantation, slow recovery of long-distance nerve damage, and deficiencies in local cytokines and extracellular matrix contribute to the complexity of effective PNI treatment. It is extremely urgent to develop functional nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) as substitutes for nerve autografts. We fabricate an aligned topological scaffold by combining the E-jet 3D printing and electrospinning to exert synergistic topographical cue for perip

DLP 3D-printed biomimetic periodontium composite with xenogenic treated dentin matrix modulates periodontal regeneration and inflammatory response.

Xenogeneic treated dentin matrix (xTDM) roots serve as a promising donor source for tooth replantation. Nevertheless, the regeneration of the alveolar bone-periodontal ligament (PDL)-cementum complex persists as a challenging task owing to tissue heterogeneity, limited vascularization, and immune-associated complications. In this study, a biomimetic tubular periodontium was fabricated through digital light processing (DLP)-based 3D bioprinting around columnar xTDM roots. The bio-ink was composed of silk fibroin methacrylate (SilMA), dental follicle stem cells (DFCs), and transforming growth fa

Fabrication andin vivocharacterization of FRESH-based 3D printed chitosan construct for small intestine regeneration.

This study demonstrates the implantation of a 3D printed small intestine (SI) construct using alkali-dissolved chitosan ink and freeform reversible embedding of suspended hydrogels bioprinting technology. The research addresses the significant clinical challenges posed by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and short bowel syndrome (SBS), which often require surgical interventions leading to substantial loss of SI surface area. High costs, side effects, and donor shortages limit traditional treatments such as total parenteral nutrition and small bowel transplantation. Therefore, developing an eng

Construction of bilayer biomimetic periosteum based on SLA-3D printing for bone regeneration.

An ideal biomimetic periosteum should have excellent biocompatibility to promote osteoclast adhesion and improve osseointegration, which is significant in promoting bone regeneration. In this work, a bionic artificial periosteum printed by the SLA-3D printing was prepared, consisting of a poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)/chitosan/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) fibrous layer and a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/ammonium molybdate (Mo) cambium layer. Distinct surface characteristics were achieved on both sides of the biomimetic periosteum. Among them, the fibrous layer has high mechanical pro

Urogynecological surgical mesh implants: New trends in materials, manufacturing and therapeutic approaches.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) are two prevalent disorders affecting 30-40% of women worldwide. Current strategies to repair or improve these medical conditions are non-surgical options such as physiotherapy, or surgical options such as the use of vaginal meshes. The synthetic material polypropylene (PP), which has long been used for manufacturing these vaginal meshes, is associated with severe complications such as chronic pain, infection or mesh erosion. As a result of a widespread reporting and unacceptably high rates of complications, these issues have be

Design of 3D-Printed Nasopharyngeal Swabs for Children is Enabled by Radiologic Imaging.

3D-printed nasopharyngeal swabs for COVID-19 molecular diagnostic testing address the national shortage of swabs. Swab designs for adult use were placed in the public domain in March 2020. Swabs for pediatric use, however, need to be smaller and more flexible to navigate delicate pediatric nasopharyngeal cavities. We describe a novel use of maxillofacial CT scans to aid in the design of pediatric nasopharyngeal swabs.

3D-Printed Coronary Implants Are Effective for Percutaneous Creation of Swine Models with Focal Coronary Stenosis.

Reliable, closed-chest methods for creating large animal models of acute myocardial hypoperfusion are limited. We demonstrated the feasibility and efficacy of using magnetic resonance (MR)-compatible 3D-printed coronary implants for establishing swine models of myocardial hypoperfusion. We designed, manufactured, and percutaneously deployed implants in 13 swine to selectively create focal coronary stenosis. To test the efficacy of the implants to cause hypoperfusion or ischemia in the perfused territory, we evaluated regional wall motion, myocardial perfusion, and infarction using MR imaging.

Reinforcing interpenetrating network hydrogels with 3D printed polymer networks to engineer cartilage mimetic composites.

Engineering constructs that mimic the complex structure, composition and biomechanics of the articular cartilage represents a promising route to joint regeneration. Such tissue engineering strategies require the development of biomaterials that mimic the mechanical properties of articular cartilage whilst simultaneously providing an environment supportive of chondrogenesis. Here three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is used to develop polycaprolactone (PCL) fibre networks to mechanically reinforce interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogels consisting of alginate and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). 3D printing of a lithium-calcium-silicate crystal bioscaffold with dual bioactivities for osteochondral interface reconstruction.

It is difficult to achieve self-healing outcoming for the osteochondral defects caused by degenerative diseases. The simultaneous regeneration of both cartilage and subchondral bone tissues is an effective therapeutic strategy for osteochondral defects. However, it is challenging to design a single type of bioscaffold with suitable ionic components and beneficial osteo/chondral-stimulation ability for regeneration of osteochondral defects. In this study, we successfully synthesized a pure-phase lithium calcium silicate (Li2Ca4Si4O13, L2C4S4) bioceramic by a sol-gel method, and further prepared

Biomaterial shell bending with 3D-printed templates in vertical and alveolar ridge augmentation: a technical note.

OBJECTIVES: Alveolar ridge and vertical augmentations are challenging procedures in dental implantology. Even material blocks with an interconnecting porous system are never completely resorbed. Shell techniques combined with autologous bone chips are therefore the gold standard. Using biopolymers for these techniques is well documented. We applied three-dimensional (3-D) techniques to create an individualized bending model for the adjustment of a plane biopolymer membrane made of polylactide. STUDY DESIGN: Two cases with a vertical alveolar ridge defect in the maxilla were chosen. The cone b
