Exploring the Validity of the Short Version of the Problem Behaviours Assessment (PBA-s) for Huntington's disease: A Rasch Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The short version of the Problem Behaviours Assessment (PBA-s) is the recommended outcome measure for behavioural symptoms in Huntington's disease. Rasch analysis was used to further investigate the measurement limitations of the PBA-s. OBJECTIVES: 1) To assess the psychometric properties of the 11 severity and frequency items within the PBA-s and 2) to determine the construct validity of using a total PBA-s score as a clinical outcome measure. METHODS: PBA-s data for 517 participants from Enroll-HD were included in the Rasch analysis. Separate analyses were conducted for the sev

Preventing drug use among sexual-minority youths: findings from a tailored, web-based intervention.

PURPOSE: Rates of drug use among sexual-minority youths are disproportionately high. Yet, expressly designed prevention programs targeting this population are absent. This study developed and tested a web-based drug abuse prevention program for sexual-minority youths. METHODS: A sample (N = 236) of sexual-minority youths was recruited via Facebook. Online, all youths completed pretests; youths randomly assigned to the intervention received a 3-session prevention program; and all youths completed posttest and 3-month follow-up measurements. RESULTS: At 3-month follow-up and compared to youths

Five heads are better than one: preliminary results of team-based learning in a communication disorders graduate course.

BACKGROUND: Clinical problem-solving is fundamental to the role of the speech-language pathologist in both the diagnostic and treatment processes. The problem-solving often involves collaboration with clients and their families, supervisors, and other professionals. Considering the importance of cooperative problem-solving in the profession, graduate education in speech-language pathology should provide experiences to foster the development of these skills. One evidence-based pedagogical approach that directly targets these abilities is team-based learning (TBL). TBL is a small-group instructi

International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Catalyst for interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Patient-centred and community-based care is required for promotion of health equity. To enhance patient-centred interprofessional care, the World Health Organization recommends using the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Stellenbosch University's Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) strategy has promoted using ICF since 2010. Undergraduate medical students on rural clinical placements are expected to use ICF in approaching and managing patients. Students' ability to develop interprofessional care plans using ICF

Clinical course of psychiatric disorders in patients with cervical dystonia.

We assessed the course of psychiatric disorders in 23 cervical dystonia patients by using the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV and different rating scales. Patients were studied on two occasions 5 years apart. There were no differences in psychiatric disorders and severity of psychiatric symptoms between the two evaluations, whereas the severity of dystonia was milder at the second evaluation. Psychiatric symptoms likely represent a primary disorder in cervical dystonia patients.

The influence of context on the implementation of adaptive emotion regulation strategies.

Putatively adaptive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., acceptance, problem solving, reappraisal) show weaker associations with psychopathology than putatively maladaptive strategies (e.g., avoidance, self-criticism, hiding expression, suppression of experience, worry, rumination). This is puzzling, given the central role that adaptive strategies play in a wide range of psychotherapeutic approaches. We explored this asymmetry by examining the effects of context (i.e., emotion intensity, type of emotion, social vs. academic circumstances) on the implementation of adaptive and maladaptive strat

Visuospatial abilities, memory, and executive functioning in trichotillomania and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Few studies have compared neuropsychological functioning in trichotillomania (TTM) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In OCD, most studies suggest abnormal visuospatial abilities, memory, and executive functioning. We compared 23 TTM, 21 OCD and 26 healthy control individuals on neuropsychological tasks assessing these abilities. Neither the TTM nor the OCD groups suffered from generalized neuropsychological deficits compared to the healthy control group. TTM participants showed increased perseveration on the Object Alternation Task suggesting difficulties with response flexibility. OCD

[Changes in ICD-11: Disorders Due to Substance Use or Addictive Behaviours].

ICD-11 will discriminate 3 subcategories of harmful patterns of substance use and 5 subcategories of dependence. According to a pre-version, the 6 diagnostic criteria of substance dependence in ICD-10 will be condensed in 3 pairs in ICD-11. The term "persistent substance use despite clear evidence of overly harmful consequence" shall be replaced by "substance use often continues despite the occurrence of problems". Pathological gambling and pathological gaming will be listed as addictive behaviors next to substance use disorders. The reduction from 6 to 3 criteria of substance dependence may be

Cognitive Disabilities and Long-term Outcomes in Children with Epilepsy: A Tangled Tail.

Cognitive problems ranging from mild specific learning problems to profound intellectual disability (ID) are very common in children with epilepsy. For most affected patients there is good evidence that the cognitive problems are present at the onset of seizures and do not deteriorate over time. There is no evidence that a few seizures lead to cognitive deterioration. An exception may occur in children with epileptic encephalopathies, although this contention is not always easy to prove. ID is a strong predictor of intractable epilepsy, and the greater the degree of the ID the greater the risk

Attention problems among children with a positive family history of alcohol abuse or dependence and controls. Prevalence and course for the period from preteen to early teen years.

This longitudinal study investigated the scope and course of attention problems over a period of time from preteen (ages 7-12 years) to early teen years (ages 13-17 years). We compared symptoms in subjects with and without a family history (FH) of alcohol abuse or dependence from among families without evidence of antisocial personality disorder. Evaluations of attention problems for the offspring were based on the Child Behavior Checklist and a validated semistructured interview carried out with the mother. The findings indicate no higher risk for attention problems and attention-deficit hype

Patterns of interpersonal problems in irritable bowel syndrome patients: a circumplex analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the nature of interpersonal problems in IBS patients using the interpersonal circumplex as an organizing framework. Based on conceptualizations of interpersonal behavior of IBS patients, we predicted that their interpersonal problems would peak in the friendly submissive regions of the circumplex. METHOD: Fifty-nine healthy controls and 174 IBS patients completed the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). RESULTS: The interpersonal profile of IBS patients was characterized by difficulties with assertiveness and, to a lesser

Why bother about clumsiness? The implications of having developmental coordination disorder (DCD).

Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a common motor problem affecting--even in rather severe form--several percent of school age children. In the past, DCD has usually been called 'clumsy child syndrome' or 'non-cerebral-palsy motor-perception dysfunction'. This disorder is more common in boys than in girls and is very often associated with psychopathology, particularly with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders/ autistic-type problems. Conversely, children with ADHD and autism spectrum problems, particularly those given a diagnosis of Asperger s

Irritability and parenting practices as mediational variables between temperament and affective, anxiety, and oppositional defiant problems.

Irritability and parenting are potential targets for transdiagnostic studies to identify the common and core dysfunctional characteristics underlying several diagnostic pictures with the goal of addressing these issues in treatment. Our objective was to investigate the different paths from temperament to child psychopathology (affective, anxiety, and oppositional problems) through irritability and parenting using a prospective design from ages 3 to 7. A sample of 614 3-year-old preschoolers was followed at ages 4, 6, and 7. Parents answered questionnaires about temperament (age 3), irritabilit

Effectiveness of the 'Who's Challenging Who' support staff training intervention to improve attitudes and empathy towards adults with intellectual disability and challenging behaviours: study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Findings suggest approximately one in six people with intellectual disability engage in 'challenging behaviours', which include aggression towards others/property and self-injurious actions. In residential settings, actions of staff members can make challenging behaviours more likely to occur, or make these behaviours worse. In particular, negative attitudes from members of staff and lack of understanding about the reasons for challenging behaviour are contributory factors. 'Who's Challenging Who?' (WCW) training is designed to emphasise the role of staff in residential settings as

Cornelia de Lange and Ehlers-Danlos: comorbidity of two rare syndromes.

We present a case of a young adult with both Cornelia de Lange syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The patient showed non-verbal autism, intellectual disability and severe/intractable self-harming behaviours that led to a life-threatening complication (ie, septicaemia). A significant reduction in the self-harming behaviours was attained in a multidisciplinary neurobehavioural inpatient unit after addressing all causes of somatic pains, managing pain using level II and III analgesics, stabilising the patient's mood, limiting the iatrogenic effects of multiple prescriptions and offering a speci

Children with a cleft lip and palate: an exploratory study of the role of the parent-child interaction.

INTRODUCTION: Having a child with an orofacial cleft may be associated with a specific pattern of parenting. In order to investigate the parenting style, the present study assessed parent-child interactions during a problem-solving task performed under pressure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Parent-child interactions were video recorded for 15 families with a child with a cleft lip and palate (CLP), which were then compared to 20 healthy families and 20 families with a child suffering from migraines. The children had to solve a puzzle within a specified time with either their mother or father. RESUL
