SARS-CoV-2 infection as a trigger of type 2 diabetes in adults: a population-based cohort study in Sweden using a double negative control design.

Previous studies suggest an increased risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) following SARS-CoV-2 infection, which may be subject to detection bias from increased health care contacts among the infected. We aimed to assess the causal effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on new-onset T2D using a test-negative design and negative control outcomes. We included all individuals aged ≥ 18 years registered in Sweden on 1 February 2020 without prior T2D who ordered a SARS-CoV-2 test through the Swedish healthcare service between 1 February 2020 and 28 February 2022 (N = 3,175,958). A test-negative design w

Congenital Syphilis in Brazil: Municipal Antenatal Care, Primary Health Care Capacity, and Territorial Inequalities, 2015-2024.

OBJECTIVES: To describe spatial patterns of gestational (GS) and congenital syphilis (CS) in Brazil and assess municipal antenatal care, sociodemographic, and primary-care correlates of CS notifications after accounting for GS burden. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide ecological study using routinely collected SINAN, SINASC, and CNES data (2015-2024). Spatial analyses used empirical Bayes smoothing, Global Moran's I, and LISA. Associations were estimated with a Bayesian negative-binomial spatiotemporal model including municipal random effects, annually replicated Besag fields, a first-order

Beyond 'Go and bring your husband': a COM-B guided qualitative study on the barriers to male involvement in antenatal care in Bamenda Health District, Cameroon.

Maternal and infant mortality remains a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa. While male involvement in pregnancy and child birth has proven to be an effective intervention that can significantly reduce these deaths, low-income settings like Cameroon continue to encounter obstacles in engaging men in maternal and child health services. This study seeks to examine and contextualize barriers to male partner involvement in antenatal care in order to inform the development of an intervention aimed at promoting male participation in maternal and child health in Cameroon. We employed a

Decline in Vaccination Coverage by Age 24 Months and Vaccination Inequities Among Children Born in 2020 and 2021 - National Immunization Survey-Child, United States, 2021-2023.

Data from the National Immunization Survey-Child (NIS-Child) were analyzed to estimate coverage with childhood vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices among U.S. children by age 24 months. Coverage with nearly all vaccines was lower among children born in 2020 and 2021 than it was among those born in 2018 and 2019, with declines ranging from 1.3 to 7.8 percentage points. Analyses of NIS-Child data for earlier birth cohorts have not revealed such widespread declines in routine childhood vaccination coverage. Coverage among children born during 2020-2021 varied b

The Role of Rotational Thromboelastometry in Early Detection of the Hemostatic Derangements in Neonates with Systemic Candida Infection.

BACKGROUND: Systemic Candida infection (SCI) is the third most common cause of late-onset sepsis in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). While platelet involvement in fungal infections has been extensively studied, evaluation of the hemostatic mechanism in Candida infections, especially in neonates, has not been widely investigated. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the hemostatic profile of neonates with SCI through rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), a laboratory method that assesses the viscoelastic properties of blood. METHODS: This is a single-centered prospective cohort s

Exploring research hotspots and future directions in neural tube defects field by bibliometric and bioinformatics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) is the most common birth defect of the central nervous system (CNS) which causes the death of almost 88,000 people every year around the world. Much efforts have been made to investigate the reasons that contribute to NTD and explore new ways to for prevention. We trawl the past decade (2013-2022) published records in order to get a worldwide view about NTDs research field. METHODS: 7,437 records about NTDs were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) database. Tools such as shell scripts, VOSviewer, SCImago Graphica, CiteSpace and PubTator were used for

Evolution of guanylate binding protein genes shows a remarkable variability within bats (Chiroptera).

BACKGROUND: GBPs (guanylate binding proteins), an evolutionary ancient protein family, play a key role in the host's innate immune response against bacterial, parasitic and viral infections. In Humans, seven GBP genes have been described (GBP1-7). Despite the interest these proteins have received over the last years, evolutionary studies have only been performed in primates, Tupaia and rodents. These have shown a pattern of gene gain and loss in each family, indicative of the birth-and-death evolution process. RESULTS: In this study, we analysed the evolution of this gene cluster in several b

Developing a length of stay prediction model for newborns, achieving better accuracy with greater usability.

BACKGROUND: One in ten newborn children is born prematurely. The elongated length of stay (LOS) of these children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has important implications on hospital occupancy figures, healthcare and management costs, as well as the psychology of parents. In order to allow accurate planning and resource allocation, this study aims to create a generalizable and robust model to predict the NICU LOS of preterm newborns. METHODS: Data were collected from a large tertiary center NICU between 2011 and 2018 and relates to 5,362 newborns. The selected model was externall

Can Umbilical Cord and Meconium Results Be Directly Compared? Analytical Approach Matters.

Maternal drug use during pregnancy is a significant concern. Drug-exposed newborns are often born premature and may suffer from birth defects, neonatal abstinence syndrome and cognitive and developmental delays. Because of this, testing of neonatal specimens is carried out to assess fetal drug exposure during pregnancy. Umbilical cord tissue (UC) and meconium are commonly used specimens for this purpose. However, comprehensive studies comparing drug positivity rates and concentration in the two specimen types are lacking. To this end, 4,036 paired UC and meconium specimens originating from 13

Nosocomial Infections Affecting Newborns with Abdominal Wall Defects.

UNLABELLED: Abdominal wall defects are serious birth defects, with long periods of hospitalization and significant costs to the medical system. Nosocomial infection (NI) may be an additional risk factor that aggravates the evolution of newborns with such malformations. METHODS: in order to analyze the factors that may lead to the occurrence of NI, we performed a retrospective study over a period of thirty-two years (1990-2021), in a tertiary children's hospital; 302 neonates with omphalocele and gastroschisis were eligible for the study. RESULTS: a total of 33.7 % patients were infected with

Biomechanical characteristics of the ovarian cortex in POI patients and functional outcomes after drug-free IVA.

PURPOSE: There is increasing evidence that the ovarian extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a critical role in follicle development. The rigidity of the cortical ECM limits expansion of the follicle and consequently oocyte maturation, maintaining the follicle in its quiescent state. Quiescent primordial, primary, and secondary follicles still exist in primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) patients, and techniques as in vitro activation (IVA) and drug-free IVA have recently been developed aiming to activate these follicles based on the Hippo signaling disruption that is essential in mechanotransducti

Multicentre survey of retinopathy of prematurity in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is higher in Indonesia than in high-income countries. In order to reduce the incidence of the disease, a protocol on preventing, screening and treating ROP was published in Indonesia in 2010. To assist the practical implementation of the protocol, meetings were held in all Indonesia regions, calling attention to the high incidence of ROP and the methods to reduce it. In addition, national health insurance was introduced in 2014, making ROP screening and treatment accessible to more infants. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the introd

Maternal HIV and syphilis are not syndemic in Brazil: Hot spot analysis of the two epidemics.

While the annual incidence of HIV diagnosis in pregnancy in Brazil remains relatively stable, rates of maternal syphilis increased over six-fold in the past decade. We hypothesized that maternal HIV and syphilis are two distinct epidemics. Data on all cases of maternal HIV or syphilis detected in pregnancy between January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018 were requested from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. In order to evaluate how the epidemics evolved over the time period, ArcGIS software was used to generate spatiotemporal maps of annual rates of detection of maternal HIV and syphilis in 2010 a
