Spatial modeling of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran from 1983 to 2013.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous Leshmaniasis (CL), a parasitic skin infection caused by Leishmania species, is endemic in some regions of Iran. In this study, the effect of location on the incidence and distribution of CL in Iran was studied. METHODS: We collected datas including the number of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis cases and populations at-risk of disease in Iran's different provinces reported by the Iranian ministry of health and the National Bureau of Statistics, respectively. Spatial modeling was performed using Arc GIS software. Descriptive maps, hotspot analysis, and high/low clustering analys

The Impact of Greenspace on Thermal Comfort in a Residential Quarter of Beijing, China.

With the process of urbanization, a large number of residential quarters, which is the main dwelling form in the urban area of Beijing, have been developed in last three decades to accommodate the rising population. In the context of intensification of urban heat island (UHI), the potential degradation of the thermal environment of residential quarters can give rise to a variety of problems affecting inhabitants' health. This paper reports the results of a numerical study of the thermal conditions of a residential quarter on a typical summertime day under four greening modification scenarios,

Violence against new graduated nurses in clinical settings: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Ethical studies in nursing are very important topics, and it is particularly crucial with vulnerable populations such as new graduated nurses. Neglecting ethical principles and violence toward graduates can lead to their occupational burnout, job dissatisfaction, and leaving the nursing profession. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed with the aim of understanding the experience of Iranian experienced nurses' use of lateral and horizontal violence against new graduated nurses. RESEARCH DESIGN: This qualitative study used a conventional content analysis approach; it was conducted wi

Estimating unbiased economies of scale of HIV prevention projects: a case study of Avahan.

Governments and donors are investing considerable resources on HIV prevention in order to scale up these services rapidly. Given the current economic climate, providers of HIV prevention services increasingly need to demonstrate that these investments offer good 'value for money'. One of the primary routes to achieve efficiency is to take advantage of economies of scale (a reduction in the average cost of a health service as provision scales-up), yet empirical evidence on economies of scale is scarce. Methodologically, the estimation of economies of scale is hampered by several statistical iss

One Health: Lessons Learned from East Africa.

Africa is faced with many of the most daunting challenges of our time. It comprises roughly 15% of the world's human population, and most of its countries are perpetually ranked "Low" on the United Nations' Human Development Index. On the other hand, Africa has arguably the largest proportion of intact natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and sociocultural capital and the lowest impact on global warming of any continent. Thus, African leaders are faced with competing demands and values among a multitude of complex issues, such as high human population growth, extreme poverty, food insecurity, lan

Geographical and environmental factors driving the increase in the Lyme disease vector Ixodes scapularis.

The population densities of many organisms have changed dramatically in recent history. Increases in the population density of medically relevant organisms are of particular importance to public health as they are often correlated with the emergence of infectious diseases in human populations. Our aim is to delineate increases in density of a common disease vector in North America, the blacklegged tick, and to identify the environmental factors correlated with these population dynamics. Empirical data that capture the growth of a population are often necessary to identify environmental factors

Agrochemical spray drift; assessment and mitigation--a review.

During application of agrochemicals spray droplets can drift beyond the intended target to non-target receptors, including water, plants and animals. Factors affecting this spray drift include mode of application, droplet size, which can be modified by the nozzle types, formulation adjuvants, wind direction, wind speed, air stability, relative humidity, temperature and height of released spray relative to the crop canopy. The rate of fall of spray droplets depends upon the size of the droplets but is modified by entrainment in a mobile air mass and is also influenced by the rate of evaporation

Pathogenic landscapes: interactions between land, people, disease vectors, and their animal hosts.

BACKGROUND: Landscape attributes influence spatial variations in disease risk or incidence. We present a review of the key findings from eight case studies that we conducted in Europe and West Africa on the impact of land changes on emerging or re-emerging vector-borne diseases and/or zoonoses. The case studies concern West Nile virus transmission in Senegal, tick-borne encephalitis incidence in Latvia, sandfly abundance in the French Pyrenees, Rift Valley Fever in the Ferlo (Senegal), West Nile Fever and the risk of malaria re-emergence in the Camargue, and rodent-borne Puumala hantavirus and

Stem-cell driven cancer: "hands-off" regulation of cancer development.

Ecological factors, host characteristics and/or interactions among microbes may all shape the occurrence of microbes and the structure of microbial communities within organisms. In the past, disentangling these factors and determining their relative importance in shaping within-host microbiota communities has been hampered by analytical limitations to account for (dis)similar environmental preferences ('environmental filtering'). Here we used a joint species distribution modelling (JSDM) approach to characterize the bacterial microbiota of one of the most important disease vectors in Europe, t

Factors affecting the geographic distribution of West Nile virus in Georgia, USA: 2002-2004.

The distribution of West Nile virus (WNV) is dependent on the occurrence of both susceptible avian reservoir hosts and competent mosquito vectors. Both factors can be influenced by geographic variables such as land use/landcover, elevation, human population density, physiographic region, and temperature. The current study uses geographic information systems (GIS) and logistic regression analyses to model the distribution of WNV in the state of Georgia based on a wild bird indicator system, and to identify human and environmental predictor variables that are important in the determination of WN

Population structure of Andean Triatoma infestans: allozyme frequencies and their epidemiological relevance.

Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) from 22 Andean localities in Bolivia (n = 968) and Peru (n = 37) were analysed by multi-locus enzyme electrophoresis. Among 12 gene-enzyme systems analysed, GPD, 6GPD and PGM were polymorphic, ACON, G6PD, GPI, 1DH, LAP, MDH, ME, PEP-A and PEP-B were monomorphic. Allozyme frequencies were analysed in relation to geographical and climatic factors, and the presence or absence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection. At one locality (Vallegrande, Bolivia), the frequency of 6Pgd-1 was significantly higher in infected (41% of 85) than in uninfected (17% of 83) adult

Extreme Temperatures and Missed Pediatric Preventive Care Visits.

IMPORTANCE: Missed pediatric preventive care visits can delay essential developmental screenings, immunizations, and management of chronic conditions, adversely impacting child health. Understanding the relationship between extreme temperatures and missed preventive care is essential for developing adaptive strategies to maintain care access amid increasing climate variability. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of extreme temperatures with rates of missed pediatric preventive care visits and evaluate differences by patient age, insurance, and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES). DESIG

UV Index from ERA5 reanalysis.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation significantly impacts human health. Consequently, comprehensive UV climatological databases are of great interest. UV exposure is evaluated by weighting UV spectra with spectral functions that describe physiological responses at each wavelength. The most widely used function is the erythemal weighting function, which is used to compute the UV Index (UVI) to assess the health risk associated with UV overexposure. The ERA5 datasets, produced by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (CDS), offer hourly ground-level UV radiation ([Formula: see text]), but do

Temperature and heat-load exposure effects on preterm births: Insights from a population-based study using distributed lag non-linear models.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth presents a substantial health, psychological, and economic burden worldwide. Environmental factors, including temperature fluctuations, are known to influence the risk of preterm birth. This study aimed to investigate the association between high temperatures and heat load and preterm births. METHODS: Using a time-series analysis, we examined data from all births in five Israeli districts between 2010-2016. Meteorological indices were computed for each district. Distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM) incorporating Poisson regression were employed to investigate the

Farmers' perceptions of livestock drinking water quality and associated risk factors for reported livestock illness and productivity losses in free-range ruminant systems.

Drinking water quality is a critical determinant of livestock health and productivity, yet information on farmers' perceptions of water quality and associated livestock health outcomes in communal free-range production systems remains limited. This study investigated farmers' perceptions of livestock drinking water quality and identified factors associated with reported livestock illness and productivity losses attributed to poor drinking water quality in communal free-range ruminant. A cross-sectional survey of 240 livestock farmers was conducted using a structured questionnaire that covered

Smoke-Affected Rain Fertilizes Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems.

Wildland fire smoke and ash are pervasive and a significant source of particulate matter to the atmosphere. In addition to effects on air quality, wildland smoke and ash deposit to ecosystems via dry (particulate) and wet (precipitation) deposition. Here we combine remotely sensed smoke polygon data with rainfall and weekly wet deposition data from > 250 U.S. National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) sites to quantify wildland smoke influence on wet ion deposition during 2014, 2020, and 2022. Combined records of daily smoke and rain indicate that sites experienced 21 smoke-rain days (when

Perceived stigma, emotional resilience, and depressive/anxiety symptoms across school stages: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent psychological distress rises sharply. Stigma may inflict harms that exceed the disorders themselves; stress and emotional resilience is pivotal for mental health. Yet how perceived stigma, stress, resilience, and symptoms interact across school stages remains underexplored. We therefore examined stage-specific prevalence and interrelations of perceived stigma, perceived stress, emotional resilience, depression, and anxiety. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, school-based online survey from November 2024 to February 2025 among students in Chongqing, Sichuan, and

Health Status in Informal Urban Settlements of Barishal, Bangladesh: Social Determinants, Environmental Risks, and Treatment-Seeking Behavior as Structural Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization in low- and middle-income countries has intensified health inequalities within informal settlements, yet empirical analyses often isolate behavioral factors from structural determinants. In Bangladesh, unplanned urban growth has produced vulnerable settlements where social inequalities intersect with infrastructural deficits, particularly in secondary coastal cities such as Barishal, a climate-sensitive region characterized by migration, poverty, and weak municipal capacity. AIM: This study examines the socio-demographic and socioeconomic patterning of self-repo

Rising dengue burden in high-altitude central Nepal: evidence from a population-based longitudinal serosurvey, 2019-2023.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is intensifying globally due to climate change, urbanization, and land use changes. In Nepal, dengue has expanded from lowland regions to higher altitudes, with record outbreaks in 2022 and 2023. However, reliance on passive surveillance and hospital-based studies may underestimate community-level infection burden. METHODS: We conducted a population-based serologic cohort study in Kathmandu and Kavrepalanchok districts, Nepal, enrolling a geographically representative, age-stratified random sample of residents aged 0-25 years from pre-defined hospital catchment areas. Enrol
