The safe use of surgical energy devices by surgeons may be overestimated.

BACKGROUND: Surgical energy injuries are an underappreciated phenomenon. Improper use of surgical energy or poor attention to patient safety can result in operating room fires, tissue injuries, and interferences with other electronic devices, while rare complications can be devastatingly severe. Despite this, there is no current standard requirement for educating surgeons on the safe use of energy-based devices or evaluation of electrosurgery (ES) education in residency training, credentialing, or practice. The study aimed to assess the current baseline knowledge of surgeons and surgical train

Implementation and results of a surgical training programme for chronic suppurative otitis media in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media is a massive public health problem in numerous low- and middle-income countries. Unfortunately, few low- and middle-income countries can offer surgical therapy. METHODS: A six-month long programme in Cambodia focused on training local surgeons in type I tympanoplasty was instigated. Qualitative educational and quantitative surgical outcomes were evaluated in the 12 months following programme completion. A four-month long training programme in mastoidectomy and homograft ossiculoplasty was subsequently implemented, and the preliminary surgical and e

A major trauma course based on posters, audio-guides and simulation improves the management skills of medical students: Evaluation via medical simulator.

BACKGROUND: Medical competence requires the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and technical skills. Severe trauma management teaching is poorly developed during internship. Nevertheless, the basics of major trauma management should be acquired by every future physician. For this reason, the major trauma course (MTC), an educational course in major traumatology, has been developed for medical students. Our objective was to evaluate, via a high fidelity medical simulator, the impact of the MTC on medical student skills concerning major trauma management. METHODS: The MTC contains 3 teaching

Initial review of the U.S. Navy's pressurized submarine escape training outcomes.

The U.S. Navy reinstituted pressurized submarine escape training (PSET) for submarine sailors in 2009 after a nearly 30-year absence. This training addresses escape from a disabled submarine at depth with the use of the Beaufort, Ltd. Mk 10 Submarine Escape and Immersion Equipment (SEIE) suit. Training is classified as "high-risk" due to previous U.S. and foreign navy experience with training-associated morbidity and mortality, particularly from diving-related illness. To reduce risk, medical screening procedures are performed. During the first 39 months of training, 7,025 students screened fo

Development of mental health first aid guidelines for panic attacks: a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Panic attacks are common, and while they are not life-threatening events, they can lead to the development of panic disorder and agoraphobia. Appropriate help at the time that a panic attack occurs may decrease the fear associated with the attack and reduce the risk of developing an anxiety disorder. However, few people have the knowledge and skills required to assist. Simple first aid guidelines may help members of the public to offer help to people who experience panic attacks. METHODS: The Delphi method was used to reach consensus in a panel of experts. Experts included 50 prof

Research, curricula, and resources related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health in US schools of public health.

To assess the extent to which public health schools conduct research, offer planned curricula, and provide resources related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health, we mailed a self-administered questionnaire to individual department chairpersons at each school. Survey results suggested that departmental lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender research and curricular activities extending beyond HIV and AIDS were uncommon in most public health school programs. Expanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health research and curricula may help health professionals improve their r
