Magnesium and strength in elite judo athletes according to intracellular water changes.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency strongly affects muscle performance. In judo, many athletes often undergo impressive weight changes associated with severe dehydration. Common practices used by athletes to achieve a target weight can lead to Mg deficit. This study aimed to understand the impact of Mg changes on strength from periods of weight stability to prior to competition in a sample of elite judo athletes who differentially changed their intracellular water (ICW). The sample consisted of 20 elite male judo athletes. Subjects were divided according to ICW changes: losses below 2% and losses equal

Hypothesis: etiology of atherosclerosis and osteoporosis: are imbalances in the calciferol endocrine system implicated?

Atherosclerosis and osteoporosis are currently considered unrelated diseases. Osteoporosis involves bone calcium (Ca) loss and predominantly affects females after menopause. Atherosclerosis is an illness predominantly affecting males, and is primarily characterized by abnormal lipid metabolism. However, pathological calcification of the arterial wall is an underlying feature of atherosclerosis. Ca homeostasis is thus important in atherosclerosis as well as in osteoporosis. Men also develop osteoporosis although at a later age than women, and, as osteoporosis progresses in women, there is an ac

Changes in elemental composition of single muscle fibers following tenotomy of the rat soleus muscle.

Cores were produced in type 1 muscle fibers by tenotomy of rat soleus muscle. The morphology and histochemistry of the muscle fibers was established by light microscopy on cryostat sections stained for hematoxylin-eosin or myofibrillar ATPase and on semithin plastic sections. The ultrastructure was visualized on thin plastic sections. On 6 micrometers of freeze-dried cryosections, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was performed on muscle fibers visualized in the scanning-transmission mode of electron microscopy. This procedure permitted quantification of different intracellular elements su

Abnormal erythrocyte metabolism in hepatic disease: effect of NADP repletion.

Erythrocytes from ten patients with severe liver disease displayed low methylene blue-stimulated hexose monophosphate (HMP) shunt activity and glucose recycling despite elevated total glucose consumption when compared to controls. Heinz body formation was increased and reduced glutathione concentration significantly decreased. After hemolysis, no differences in methylene-blue estimulated HMP shunt activity or glucose recycling could be demonstrated between patients and controls. The addition of 2- and 4-mM NADP to the hemolysates produced significantly greater HMP shunt activity and glucose re

Medium-chain triglycerides and the impact on fat absorption, growth, nutritional status and clinical outcomes in children with cholestatic liver disease: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) supplementation is recommended in cholestatic liver disease, despite unclear evidence and no consensus on the ideal percentage of fat that should be MCT. The aim was to undertake a scoping review to identify the extent and type of evidence regarding how MCT supplementation, and percentage of MCT, affects fat absorption, growth, nutritional status and clinical outcomes (morbidity, mortality, transplant) in children with cholestatic liver disease. METHODS: Nine databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PubMed, AMED, Cochrane Library, Global Health, S

Identification, and Functional and Expression Analyses of the CorA/MRS2/MGT-Type Magnesium Transporter Family in Maize.

Magnesium (Mg(2+)) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, and the CorA/MRS2/MGT-type Mg(2+) transporters play important roles in maintaining Mg(2+) homeostasis in plants. Although the MRS2/MGT genes have been identified in two model plant species, Arabidopsis and rice, a comprehensive analysis of the MRS2/MGT gene family in other plants is lacking. In this work, 12 putative MRS2/MGT genes (ZmMGT1- ZmMGT12) were identified in maize and all of them were classified into five distinct subfamilies by phylogenetic analysis. A complementation assay in the Salmonella typhimuri

Serum levels of magnesium and their relationship with CRP in patients with OSA.

BACKGROUND: Low levels of magnesium (Mg) are associated with chronic inflammatory stress. Some animal studies have reported that a moderate deficiency of Mg, similar to that which occurs in humans, may increase inflammatory or oxidative stress stimulated by other factors, such as disrupted sleep or sleep deficiency. PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between serum levels of Mg and the inflammatory response in patients with a new diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: This clinical, retrospective study registered 68 patients with newly diagnosed mild

Dietary fiber intake increases the risk of zinc deficiency in healthy and diabetic women.

Phytic acid is a major determinant of zinc bioavailability. Little is known about phytic acid intakes or indices of zinc bioavailability in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), a condition that predisposes to zinc deficiency. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to measure and explore the relationships among phytic acid intake, zinc bioavailability, and molecular markers of zinc homeostasis in 20 women with DM compared to 20 healthy women. The phytate/zinc, (calcium)(phytate)/zinc, and (calcium + magnesium)(phytate)/zinc molar ratios were used to indicate zinc bioavailability. Plasma zinc conce

Growth and nutrition of birch seedlings at varied relative addition rates of magnesium.

Growth and nutrition of hydroponically cultivated birch seedlings (Betula pendula Roth.) were investigated at various magnesium (Mg) availabilities. Suboptimum Mg conditions were created by adding Mg once per hour in exponentially increasing amounts at one of four relative addition rates (R(Mg)): 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 or 0.20 day(-1). Seedlings given free access to Mg were used as controls. After an acclimation period, the relative growth rate of the seedlings attained the same value as the corresponding relative rate of Mg addition. In all suboptimum Mg treatments, deficiency symptoms in the form

Scientifically-based strategies for nutrition of the high-risk low birth weight infant.

Technological advances in the intensive care of low birth weight (LBW) infants have resulted in major increases in their survival. New challenges in meeting their nutritional needs have emerged. Very low birth (VLBW) weight infants have very little body fat or glycogen reserves at birth, making them susceptible to starvation. If fed enterally, they require at least 120 calories/kg per day for growth. Numerous immaturities in the gastrointestinal tract and liver limit protein digestion, absorption, and metabolism. Several amino acids not considered essential to the older child or adult are esse

The effect of maternal diabetes on trace element status and fetal development in the rat.

Despite improvements in prenatal care, there is a high incidence of congenital malformations in diabetic pregnancies. Not only is the diabetic patient characterized by a disorder of total fuel metabolism, but abnormal trace element metabolism occurs as well. In the present study, maternal and fetal zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) status has been studied in Sprague-Dawley (SD) and Wistar rats. In addition, the effect of maternal diabetes on fetal development was also investigated. Rats were injected 27 days before mating with streptozocin (STZ

Bidirectional association between zinc and liver cirrhosis: evidence from mendelian randomization and clinical validation.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether low blood zinc levels in cirrhosis patients are a cause or a consequence of the disease. METHODS: Seven blood metals (calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, selenium, zinc) were assessed using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). We performed reverse MR analysis on the positive results and subsequently evaluated the zinc findings in a cohort of 137 cirrhosis patients. RESULTS: MR analysis revealed that higher genetically predicted zinc levels were associated with an increased cirrhosis risk (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = [1.04, 1.46], p = 0.014). No si

Nutritional Characterisation of Childhood Chronic Kidney Disease: Trace Element Malnutrition in Paediatric Renal Disease (TeMPeReD) Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In chronic kidney disease (CKD), poor nutrition is associated with poorer clinical outcomes. There are limited data on milder stages of childhood CKD. METHODS: This study characterised the nutritional state of a cohort of children with CKD. RESULTS: Within the cohort (mean age 10.5 years, mean eGFR = 57 mL/min/1.73 m2), obesity defined by body mass index rates was comparable to that in the general population, but central obesity (waist-to-height ratio > 0.5) was evident in 44% of children. Although average nutrient intakes for the cohort were acceptable, there was mark

Prevalence and Predictors of Chronic Health Conditions of Inmates Newly Admitted to Maximum Security Prisons.

Almost all patients with liver disease, especially advanced liver disease, have some evidence of malnutrition, including mineral/vitamin deficiency. A major health trend in the United States has been the significant growth in the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), including nutrition supplements and herbal agents. In the 1990s, the United States government created the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), as well as the Office on Dietary Supplements, to extend our knowledge in these areas. CAM users are often highly educated and frequently use CA
