Cataract after electrical injury: clinical characteristics and surgical management outcomes, a case report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Electric cataract, a rare and vision-threatening complication, is frequently observed in patients following electrical injuries. Current knowledge of its clinical characteristics and treatment is largely derived from a limited number of case reports. This report presents three cases of distinct types of electric cataract, with detailed documentation of disease progression, clinical features, individualized surgical management, and corresponding outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: This case series included three patients: a 30-year-old female with indirect lightning-induced cataract (onse

Cataract surgery has minimal effect on corneal shape.

PURPOSE: To quantify the effect of cataract surgery on cornea shape. METHODS: Patients undergoing cataract surgery with standardised 2.75 mm surgical incisions at 110 degrees with a side port at 50 degrees were included. Repeat biometric measurements were taken before surgery and at 6 weeks on both operated and unoperated fellow eyes. Data were transformed into Long's formalism for analysis. Device-specific measurement error was determined. The main outcome measure was the change in keratometry taking into account the change in keratometry of the unoperated fellow eye. Secondary outcome measu

Prediction of Visual Acuity in Pseudophakic Cataract Population Based on Residual Refraction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to design a simple, handy prediction for the effect of spherical and cylindrical refractive error on the visual acuity degradation at different distances and validate this model on a clinical dataset. METHODS: This study examined 70 eyes from 35 patients' post-cataract surgery with aberration-free intraocular lenses. Biometric and corneal data were analysed, and subjective refraction and visual acuity were evaluated by two experienced optometrists. The study computed the spherical equivalent (SEQ), and defocus equivalent via vector addition (DEQ vec), as

Impact of the Minimization of Standard Deviation Before Zeroization of the Mean Bias on the Performance of IOL Power Formulas.

PURPOSE: In cataract surgery, accurate intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations are crucial for optimal postoperative refractive outcomes. This study explores the impact of prioritizing the reduction of the standard deviation (SD) of prediction errors before mean prediction error (PE) adjustment on IOL calculation formula precision and accuracy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 4885 eyes from 2611 patients, all implanted with the same IOL model, comparing four traditional IOL power calculation formulas: SRK/T, Holladay 1, Haigis, and Hoffer Q. We introduced new constants aim

Contemporary approach to the diagnosis and management of primary angle-closure disease.

The primary angle-closure disease spectrum varies from a narrow angle to advanced glaucoma. A variety of imaging technologies may assist the clinician in determining the pathophysiology and diagnosis of primary angle closure, but gonioscopy remains a mainstay of clinical evaluation. Laser iridotomy effectively eliminates the pupillary block component of angle closure; however, studies show that, in many patients, the iridocorneal angle remains narrow from underlying anatomic issues, and increasing lens size often leads to further narrowing over time. Recent studies have further characterized t

Rotation and decentration of an undersized plate-haptic trifocal toric intraocular lens in an eye with moderate myopia.

We present the case of a 56-year-old woman with moderate myopia and bilateral cataract who had cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Due to the patient's desire for spectacle independence, a trifocal IOL with toric correction for astigmatism was implanted. During the follow-up, it became obvious that the implanted IOL had rotated and tilted due to insufficient fixation in the large capsular bag of the myopic eye. An IOL explantation was therefore performed, and the original IOL was exchanged for a bifocal toric IOL with a larger overall diameter. Stable fixation of the I

Capsular hook-assisted implantation of modified capsular tension ring.

A 16-year-old boy presented with decrease of vision over a period of 2 years. On examination, he was diagnosed to have microspherophakia with lenticular myopia with secondary glaucoma in both eyes. He was treated by lens aspiration and two-point capsular support using a modified capsular tension ring (M-CTR) and capsular tension segment (CTS) sutured to the sclera along with implantation of a foldable intraocular lens inside the bag. Lens aspiration was performed without artificial capsular hook support of the bag, as the lens was soft and vitreous was formed. However, M-CTR rotation into the

An analysis of the factors influencing the residual refractive astigmatism after cataract surgery with toric intraocular lenses.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of posterior corneal astigmatism, surgically-induced corneal astigmatism (SICA), intraocular lens (IOL) orientation, and effective lens position on the refractive outcome of toric IOLs. METHODS: Five models were prospectively investigated. Keratometric astigmatism and an intended SICA of 0.2 diopters (D) were entered into model 1. Total corneal astigmatism, measured by a rotating Scheimpflug camera, was used instead of keratometric astigmatism in model 2. The mean postoperative SICA, the actual postoperative IOL orientation, and the influence of the effec
