Severe post-vaccination reaction to 17D yellow fever vaccine in Nigeria.

An unusual outbreak of post-vaccination reactions to 17D yellow fever vaccine occurred at Shaki, Nigeria, in May 1987. Twenty-five of the affected people were treated at the Baptist Hospital Shaki. The patients presented with rapidly progressing swelling of the left arm with associated fever and other constitutional symptoms few hours after inoculation with the vaccine. Some of the patients developed gangrene of the affected limb, five of them went into coma and died. Investigation of five cases of vesicular enteroviral stomatitis with exanthema induced by coxsackie A5 virus.

Five cases of vesicular enteroviral stomatitis with exanthema or hand-foot-mouth disease are described. The diagnosis was based on the clinical aspect, the Coxsackie A5 virus isolation from pathological samples, and confirmed by serological tests.

Yellow fever outbreak in Ipetu-Ijesa: response after mass vaccination.

An outbreak of yellow fever in Ipetu-Ijesa, Nigeria, was confirmed by serological test and virus isolation. Serologically testing of subjects 12 weeks after an emergency mass vaccination following the outbreak showed a high degree of cross reactivity between yellow fever virus and seven other group B flaviviruses. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies to yellow fever vaccine and wild virus among the vaccinated subjects. Seroepidemiological survey for yellow fever antibodies in domestic animals.

A total of 192 out of 300 serum samples from camel, cattle, sheep and goats tested for yellow fever virus antibody by the counterimmunoelectrophoresis were found positive. This test was confirmed by the single radial haemolysis and serum neutralization tests. Twenty-one and 36 sera were positive for specific yellow fever virus antibodies by the single radial haemolysis and serum neutralization tests respectively. The possible role of these animals in the epidemiology of yellow fever is discussed.

By using CBA inbred mice as responders, the influence of in vivo B4 Coxsackievirus infection (in two separate experimental procedures) on anti-virus cell-mediated immunity (CMI), natural killer (NK) cell activity and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced interleukin-1 (IL-1) production in spleen cells were studied.
