Superoxide has been implicated as a contributing factor to cochlear pathology from a number of sources, including noise and ototoxic drugs. The effects of NADPH oxidase-dependent superoxide on the cochlea were investigated in the current study using paraquat (PQ). PQ is a toxic herbicide that causes tissue damage by generating superoxide through reduction of molecular oxygen in a reaction catalyzed by NADPH oxidase. The current study examined the effects of round window PQ administration on inferior colliculus (IC) evoked potential thresholds (EVP) and hair cell damage. Using implanted IC elec

The purpose of this study was to examine the electrophysiologic responses to sound from guinea pig cochleas, 3--6 days after a unilateral cervical sympathectomy. After recovery from surgery the guinea pigs developed a Horner's syndrome on the sympathectomized side. Some days later their bullas were opened and electrodes were placed bilaterally on the round windows. Most of the sympathectomized cochleas showed signs of decreased sensitivity to sound. They had a smaller dynamic range for the click- and tone-burst evoked compound action potential (CAP) compared with the non-sympathectomized cochl

The facial nerve is the seventh of 12 cranial nerves found in the head and neck region that facilitates several nerve fibers and pathways to perform various functions. Iatrogenic facial nerve injury during surgeries of the head and neck is common, ranging from 4-6%, particularly in procedures that involve mobilization or resection of associated anatomical structures. Any injury to the facial nerve or its branches impacts the quality of life and patient satisfaction as the degree of iatrogenic injury may result in partial or complete facial nerve paralysis. Of the various implementable techniqu

BACKGROUND: Hospital acquired fungal infections are defined as "never events"-medical errors that should never have happened. Systemic Candida albicans infections results in 30-50% mortality rates. Typically, adhesion to abiotic medical devices and implants initiates such infections. Efficient adhesion initiates formation of aggressive biofilms that are difficult to treat. Therefore, inhibitors of adhesion are important for drug development and likely to have a broad spectrum efficacy against many fungal pathogens. In this study we further the development of a small molecule, Filastatin, capab

Both dyslexics and auditory neuropathy (AN) subjects show inferior consonant-vowel (CV) perception in noise, relative to controls. To better understand these impairments, natural acoustic speech stimuli that were masked in speech-shaped noise at various intensities were presented to dyslexic, AN, and control subjects either in isolation or accompanied by visual articulatory cues. AN subjects were expected to benefit from the pairing of visual articulatory cues and auditory CV stimuli, provided that their speech perception impairment reflects a relatively peripheral auditory disorder. Assuming

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to measure the vibrotactile thresholds on the mastoid process and forehead positions using patients with bilateral deafness and to compare the results from the two bone conduction vibrators Radioear B71 and B81.
DESIGN: There is a possibility that the vibrotactile sensation on the skin makes it difficult to discriminate between sound and vibration. The risk is highest for patients who have bone conduction hearing thresholds in proximity to or worse than their vibrotactile thresholds. All measurements were performed similar to regular bone condu

In multiple fields of study, time series measured at high frequencies are used to estimate population curves that describe the temporal evolution of some characteristic of interest. These curves are typically nonlinear, and the deviations of each series from the corresponding curve are highly autocorrelated. In this scenario, we propose a procedure to compare the response curves for different groups at specific points in time. The method involves fitting the curves, performing potentially hundreds of serially correlated tests, and appropriately adjusting the overall alpha level of the tests. O

HYPOTHESIS: Driving the oval window directly with an active middle ear implant (AMEI) can produce high levels of input to the inner ear.
BACKGROUND: Treatment of otosclerosis bypasses the stapes with a piston that penetrates the vestibule. Although this treats the conductive component of hearing loss, it does not treat the sensorineural part, which can be improved using an additional conventional hearing aid. Active middle ear implants have been proposed to be an alternative in treating otosclerosis in cases of mixed hearing losses.
METHODS: Seven temporal bones were prepared to expose the s

Evidence has accumulated in the last decade that the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) may be an important site in the etiology of tinnitus. This evidence comes from a combination of studies conducted in animals and humans. This paper will review the key findings, as follows. 1) Direct electrical stimulation of the DCN leads to changes in the loudness of tinnitus. This suggests that the loudness of tinnitus may be linked to changes in the level of neural activity in the DCN. 2) Exposure to tinnitus inducers, such as intense sound or cisplatin, causes neural activity in the DCN to become chronicall

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is designed to restore useful auditory sensations in patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2). The implantation is usually performed at the time of tumor removal in patients who do not undergo radiation treatment. The authors evaluated the performance of ABIs in three patients with NF2 in whom vestibular schwannoma continued to grow after radiation treatment. These three patients with NF2 received a 21-channel ABI; a translabyrinthine approach was used for both the tumor removal and the ABI placement. The interval between radiosurgery and the tumor remo

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is the most reliable and most frequently used procedure to evaluate audiological conditions in early infancy. However, several reports have demonstrated that developmental change in the central nervous system may affect the results of ABR in audiological evaluations. We examined statistically the reliability of ABR for the diagnosis of profound deafness in early childhood according to our experience over the past 12 years of follow-up in our facility. Subjects included 371 children among 1,041 children who were admitted to Kanariya-Gakuen (institute for pre-sc
