Innovative programs for improvement in reading through cognitive enhancement: a remediation study of Canadian First Nations children.

Forty-five Grade 3 students from a reservation school in Western Canada were divided into two remedial groups and a no-risk control group. One remedial group was given a classroom-administered cognitive enhancement program (COGENT) throughout the school year. The second group received COGENT for the first half of the year followed by a pull-out cognitive-based reading enhancement program (PREP). Children were assessed across phonological awareness, rapid naming, reading, and cognitive ability at the beginning of the year, mid-term, and at the end of the school year. MANOVA results showed a sig

Implementing alcohol screening and intervention in a family medicine residency clinic.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of simultaneous systems interventions and clinician training on management of hazardous and harmful drinking in a residency clinic. Systems interventions included forming a multi-disciplinary implementation team, training registration clerks to distribute health risk questionnaires using the AUDIT-C alcohol screen, and training nurses to score the AUDIT-C and administer the AUDIT to screen-positive patients. Clinicians were trained to perform brochure-based interventions on screen-positive patients. Research staff provided compliance feedbac

Sexually transmitted disease in adolescents.

This case-sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents-is one of a series of teaching cases in the Case-Based Series in Population-Oriented Prevention (C-POP). It has been developed for use in medical school and residency prevention curricula. The complete set of cases is presented in this supplement to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common among adolescents. This case focuses on the population-based prevention of STDs. The case begins with clinical, diagnostic, and laboratory management of an adolescent female diagnosed with gonorrhea. St

Current action for skin cancer risk reduction in English schools: pupils' behaviour in relation to sunburn.

In a random sample of schools distributed throughout all areas of England, 2703 primary school pupils from 46 schools and 2692 secondary school pupils from 32 schools were surveyed regarding behaviour in the sun, and opinions and experience of sunburn. Seventy percent (1879) of primary and 36.5% (982) of secondary pupils recalled hearing about protecting themselves from the sun at school. Primary school pupils who recalled they were told to 'stay in the shade' were more likely say they did so; 27.3% (739) of primary and 20.7% (556) of secondary school pupils reported getting sunburnt; and 53.2

Evaluation of the dissemination of active support training in staffed community residences.

Our aim was to replicate Active Support, a staff training intervention designed to increase the assistance given to adults with severe mental retardation living in community residences in order to increase their participation in activities. Training was conducted in 38 residences, involving 303 staff members and 106 persons with mental retardation. Active Support resulted in significant increases in assistance and engagement in activity. Significant correlations between participant abilities, receipt of assistance, and levels of engagement were found. Active Support was found to be of greater

Development of a nutrition self-efficacy scale for prospective physicians.

Diet is associated with 5 of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S., including coronary heart disease, certain types of cancer, atherosclerosis, and type 2 diabetes. Physicians can play a pivotal role in promoting nutritional management of diabetes and other chronic diseases. Therefore, it is important that valid instruments are created so administrators can better assess the educational needs of prospective physicians, their practices, and patient outcomes. Two comparable studies, one year apart, were undertaken to create an instrument that measures nutritional competence and self-efficac

Emergency medicine expeditions to the developing world: the Loma Linda University experience in Papua New Guinea.

Emergency physicians (EPs) are increasingly participating in international medicine in regions that are chronically medically underserved. In August 1994, a ten-member emergency medicine team from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine staffed a 70-bed bush hospital in the primitive highlands of Papua New Guinea, providing both outpatient and inpatient medical care. Typhoid fever, malaria, polio, and numerous other infectious diseases were encountered. Rampant local tribal warfare resulted in regular penetrating injuries from arrows, spears, and machetes. The expedition was judged highly

Velocardiofacial syndrome: learning difficulties and intervention.

Velocardiofacial syndrome, delineated in 1978 by Shprintzen, is a multiple genetic disorder, characterised primarily by cleft palate, cardiovascular anomalies, typical facies, and learning disorders. This syndrome with its recurrent pattern of anomalies has significant implications for education as it is linked to a variety of educationally relevant problems including learning difficulties, behaviour disorders, and speech and language deficits. While clinical research advances and new findings in cytogenetics enable early diagnosis and genetic counselling, ramifications of the syndrome in the

An education model for otitis media care field-tested in Latin America.

The World Health Organization has designated the teaching of otitis media management skills a "priority" status. Effective treatment of ear disease requires that the physician be both informationally educated as well as physically trained to use otoscopy. Little is known about how well this education can be provided in a short time and in a foreign country. To more objectively assess teaching effect, results of an education session for rural Mexican pediatric primary-care providers who were given an intensive otitis media lecture and otoscopy skills workshop in 1990 were evaluated. To test imm

[Laparoscopic training in urology. An essential principle of laparoscopic interventions in the retroperitoneum].

The main problem with clinical introduction of laparoscopic techniques in urology is that despite experience with endoscopy no significant endoscopic training is given. Laparoscopic nephrectomy, in particular, is a rather complicated procedure and needs an adequate training concept: The beginner should have the possibility of practising in vitro in a closed "pelvi-trainer" to learn video-optical coordination and orientation; then it is necessary to get used to handling the instruments and practise the different steps of the procedure (i.e. clipping of vessels, sacking of the kidney) either in

Preventive education for high-risk children: cognitive consequences of the Carolina Abecedarian Project.

Longitudinal mental test scores for 54 educationally treated disadvantaged preschool children at high-risk for nonbiologically based mild mental retardation and 53 control children were compared. The educationally treated children were in a child-centered prevention-oriented intervention program delivered in a daycare setting from infancy to age 5. Language, cognitive, perceptual-motor, and social development were stressed. Children were examined with age-appropriate tests of development at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 42, 48, and 54 months of age. Beginning at 18 months, and on every test occasion ther

Teaching sex education and counseling for the primary physician.

Today's family physicians are being confronted by increasing numbers of patients who desire and need sex education and counseling. It is suggested that the family and primary physician can approach the multiple sex-related needs of the family by understanding the family life cycle and by using permission-giving, limited information, and specific suggestions with patients as needed and as appropriate. The experience of the University of Miami's Department of Family Medicine in teaching human sexuality to medical students, residents, and faculty of the medical center is cited to help other resid

Medical Students' Perceptions of Peer-Developed Video-Based Training on Periodontal Health and Its Relationship With Systemic Diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal health is an essential aspect of systemic health, with strong evidence linking it to diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory conditions. Despite these well-documented connections, oral health remains underrepresented in medical education due to curriculum constraints. This study aimed to explore medical students' perceptions and self-reported learning outcomes regarding peer-developed video-based training on periodontal health and its relationship with systemic diseases, thereby highlighting the potential benefits of integrating periodontal…
