Sexually Dimorphic Visual Processing in the Yellow-Fever Mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Flying insects process motion across the visual scene to regulate their ground speed, correct course deviations, and respond to behaviorally relevant stimuli such as avoiding predators or finding hosts. The yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti provides a useful model for studying these visually guided behaviors, as both sexes use vision to track moving features. Approaching a moving target presents mosquitoes with a demanding visual problem: they must extract target motion from the changing visual scene while simultaneously controlling their own flight and responding to potentially dangerous mo

Attraction of Callosobruchus chinensis Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) to Volatiles Emitted by Various Leguminous Seeds.

Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) is a destructive storage pest, causing serious losses to stored legume seeds. The olfactory system of these insects plays an important part in assisting them locate host plants. Olfactory responses of female C. chinensis adults to volatiles of disparate bean seeds (Vigna radiata, Pisum sativum, Vigna unguiculata, Glycine max, and Phaseolus vulgaris) were evaluated using electroantennography (EAG) and various olfactometer bioassays. In behavioral bioassays, C. chinensis was mostly attracted to the volatiles of V. radiata. We detected 37 comp

Preliminary short-term establishment and replication kinetics of a flea-derived Wolbachia strain in an Aedes albopictus cell line.

Mosquito-borne arboviral diseases such as dengue and chikungunya have continuously been a major global public health concern. Introducing the intracellular bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia into mosquito populations has been proven to reduce dengue virus transmission, and its broader efficacy against other arboviruses has also been investigated. Several Wolbachia strains have been successfully propagated in insect cell lines, highlighting the utility of in vitro systems for studying microbial-host interactions under controlled conditions. This study investigated the initial establishment and re

Cross-protection against homo and heterologous influenza viruses via intranasal administration of an HA chimeric multiepitope nanoparticle vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Influenza A viruses (IAVs) cause seasonal influenza epidemics and pose significant threats to public health. However, seasonal influenza vaccines often elicit strain-specific immune responses and confer little protection against mismatched strains. There is an urgent need to develop universal influenza vaccines against emerging and potentially re-emerging influenza virus infections. Multiepitope vaccines combining multiple conserved epitopes can induce more robust and broader immune responses and provide a potential solution. RESULTS: Here, we demonstrated that an HA chimeric mult

Unveiling the developmental dynamics and functional role of Odorant Receptor Co-receptor (Orco) in Aedes albopictus: A novel mechanism for regulating odorant receptor expression.

As one of the most aggressive disease vectors, the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus relies heavily on its olfactory system to search for food in the larval stage, locate hosts after eclosion, and identify suitable oviposition sites after blood feeding. In mosquitoes and other insects, the olfactory system detects environmental odors primarily through a diverse repertoire of odorant receptors (ORs), which require the highly conserved odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco) to function. While Orco's role in enabling receptor function is well established, its cellular localization patterns, deve

Virus-like Particles vaccine based on co-expression of G5 Porcine rotavirus VP2-VP6-VP7 induces a powerful immune protective response in mice.

Porcine rotavirus (PoRV), a member of the Reoviridae family, constitutes a principal etiological agent of acute diarrhea in piglets younger than eight weeks of age, and it is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality within the swine industry. The G5 genotype rotavirus strain currently predominates in circulation. To develop a safe and effective porcine rotavirus vaccine, we generated an insect cell-baculovirus expression system, and successfully expressed these three viral proteins and assembled them into virus-like particles (VLPs) co-displaying VP2, VP6, and VP7. Transmission ele

Humoral and T-cell-mediated responses to an insect-specific flavivirus-based Zika virus vaccine candidate.

Flaviviruses represent a significant global health threat and relatively few licensed vaccines exist to protect against them. Insect-specific flaviviruses (ISFVs) are incapable of replication in humans and have emerged as a novel and promising tool for flavivirus vaccine development. ISFV-based flavivirus vaccines have shown exceptional safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy, however, a detailed assessment of the correlates of protection and immune responses induced by these vaccines are still needed for vaccine optimization. Here, we explore the mechanisms of protective immunity induced by a pr

Development in the Inhibition of Dengue Proteases as Drug Targets.

BACKGROUND: Viral infections continue to increase morbidity and mortality severely. The flavivirus genus has fifty different species, including the dengue, Zika, and West Nile viruses that can infect 40% of individuals globally, who reside in at least a hundred different countries. Dengue, one of the oldest and most dangerous human infections, was initially documented by the Chinese Medical Encyclopedia in the Jin period. It was referred to as "water poison," connected to flying insects, i.e., Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. DENV causes some medical expressions like dengue hemorrhagic feve

Alanine to glycine substitution in the PyR2 confers sodium channel resistance to Type I pyrethroids.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a primary urban vector of dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya worldwide. Pyrethroid insecticides are the most effective insecticides for controlling Ae. aegypti. However, pyrethroid resistance has developed due to the long-term overuse of the insecticides, and many knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations have been identified in the resistant populations. A1007G, an alanine to glycine substitution, was found in resistant Ae. aegypti from Vietnam and Malaysia, which has always co-existed with F1534C and V1016G. However, the role of A1007G in pyrethroid resistance

Geographic Variation in Testicular Morphometrics, Androgen Receptor Expression and Anti-Müllerian Hormone Levels in the Intermediate Roundleaf Bats across Distinct Regions in Thailand.

The hipposideros larvatus (intermediate roundleaf bat) is one of the insectivorous bats which has an agro-ecological role as a controller of the insect population. The reproductive patterns of H. larvatus are intricately linked to its ecological role and survival. An understanding of the testicular morphology can contribute to conservation for this species particularly in areas where its populations might be declining or under threat. However, these bats may also be associated with zoonotic diseases which can have significant public health implications. The aims of the study were to examine th

The nematicide emamectin benzoate increases ROS accumulation in Pinus massoniana and poison Monochamus alternatus.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) and transmitted by a vector insect, the Monochamus alternatus. The PWN has caused much extensive damage to pine-dominated forest ecosystems. Trunk injection of emamectin benzoate (EB) has been found to be the most useful protective measure against the PWN, due to its low effective dose and long residence time in the field. However, the interactions between EB and the host or the environment remain largely unknown, which limits the efficacy and stability of EB in practical field settings. In this study

Exploring Life History Choices: Using Temperature and Substrate Type as Interacting Factors for Blowfly Larval and Female Preferences.

Blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) present a wide range of larval lifestyles, typically classified as obligate parasitism, facultative parasitism, and complete sapro-necrophagy. Several parasitic species, both obligate and facultative, are considered to be of sanitary and economic importance, as their larvae can cause myiasis (maggot infestation in live tissue). However, it is noteworthy that the adult female plays a decisive role as she chooses the oviposition site, and, therefore, largely determines the feeding habit and developmental conditions of the larvae. In this study, two protocols ar

Combinations of plant essential oils and their major compositions inducing mortality and morphological abnormality of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Extensive uses of synthetic insecticides to control mosquito's populations have induced the insects to develop resistance against them, rendering them ineffective today. Moreover, they cause serious impacts on human health and the ecosystem. Therefore, safe and effective natural alternatives are needed. This study evaluated the larvicidal and pupicidal activities of essential oils (EOs) from Illicium verum and Zanthoxylum limonella and the major constituents against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes as well as recorded their morphological aberrations at death. The GC-MS analysis sh

The TGF-β Receptor Gene Saxophone Influences Larval-Pupal-Adult Development in Tribolium castaneum.

The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily encodes a large group of proteins, including TGF-β isoforms, bone morphogenetic proteins and activins that act through conserved cell-surface receptors and signaling co-receptors. TGF-β signaling in insects controls physiological events, including growth, development, diapause, caste determination and metamorphosis. In this study, we used the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, as a model species to investigate the role of the type I TGF-β receptor, saxophone (Sax), in mediating development. Variation in the Mitochondrial Genome of the Chagas Disease Vector Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Chagas' disease is transmitted mainly by members of the subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). Among them, Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of the disease in Southern Cone of Latin America. In order to contribute to knowledge of the genetic variation between triatomine vectors, in the present study, we analyzed the intraspecific and interspecific variations of the seven mitogenomes available from Triatominae. In addition, in order to examine their evolutionary relationships with others species of Reduviidae and to estimate the divergence time of the main lineages, we constr

The impact of imidacloprid and thiacloprid on the mean species abundance in aquatic ecosystems.

Neonicotinoids are currently the most widely used and sold insecticides in the world, providing effective pest control. Risk assessment of these and other pesticides by lab-based indicators is common. Yet, empirically and theoretically underpinning of extrapolation to indicators used in field surveys is severely limited. Consequently, the aim of our study was to quantify the toxicological and ecological impact of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid and thiacloprid to aquatic invertebrates. We derived Species Sensitivity Distributions (SSDs) based on chronic LC50 data and Mean Species Abundance Rel
