One Health approach to improve the malaria elimination programme in Henan Province.

One Health is a collaborative, multi-sectoral, trans-disciplinary approach with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes by recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and the environment and determining how this relates to the control of infectious diseases such as malaria, schistosomiasis and so on. Malarias caused by Plasmodium that commonly infects female Anopheles mosquitoes, which feed on human blood and act as a disease vector. It has been a worldwide important public health problem from ancient times. Also, malaria is one of the infectious diseases with the lo

ZIKA Virus, an Emerging Arbovirus in India: A Glimpse of Global Genetic Lineages.

ZIKA fever (ZIKAF) is an emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus illness in humans. Regarding the etiological agent, ZIKA virus (ZIKAV), though it is known to be distributed in the tropics, causing sporadic cases, its rapid global expansion with pandemic potential has raised global concern. Due to its abrupt emergence in South American countries, the Caribbean, and the Americas, the WHO declared ZIKA a public health emergency of international concern in 2016. ZIKAV usually causes mild infections; however, its recent unusual presentations of Guillen-Barré syndrome in adults and microcephaly in newbo

Has the epidemiologic conundrum of Rift Valley fever changed?

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an acute, vector-borne viral zoonotic disease primarily affecting cattle, sheep, goats, and camels with significant public health and socio-economic impacts. The disease, caused by the Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), has a complex epidemiology involving multiple vertebrate hosts and mosquito vectors. RVF outbreaks are often associated with prolonged rainfall and flooding, leading to periodic epizootics in endemic regions and potential spread to new areas. Despite its severe consequences, RVF has historically received inadequate attention in international public healt

Profiling lipidomic changes in dengue-resistant and dengue-susceptible strains of Colombian Aedes aegypti after dengue virus challenge.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector for all four serotypes of dengue viruses (DENV1-4), which infect millions across the globe each year. Traditional insecticide programs have been transiently effective at minimizing cases; however, insecticide resistance and habitat expansion have caused cases of DENV to surge over the last decade. There is an urgent need to develop novel vector control measures, but these are contingent on a detailed understanding of host-parasite interactions. Here, we have utilized lipidomics to survey the profiles of naturally DENV-resistant (Cali-MIB) or sus

Environmental suitability for lymphatic filariasis in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease and a major cause of disability worldwide. It is one of the neglected tropical diseases identified by the World Health Organization for elimination as a public health problem by 2020. Maps displaying disease distribution are helpful tools to identify high-risk areas and target scarce control resources. METHODS: We used pre-intervention site-level occurrence data from 1192 survey sites collected during extensive mapping surveys by the Nigeria Ministry of Health. Using an ensemble of machine learning modelling algorithm

Sterilization of Hulecoeteomyia japonica japonica (= Aedes japonicus japonicus) (Theobald, 1901) by high-energy photon irradiation: implications for a sterile insect technique approach in Europe.

Hulecoeteomyia japonica japonica (= Aedes japonicus japonicus) (Diptera: Culicidae) (Theobald 1901), a container-breeding invasive species in North America and Europe, is attracting particular attention for its high local abundances and possible roles in the transmission of human and animal pathogens. The preferential habitats of this species are forested and bushy areas, which renders control measures extremely inefficient. Use of the sterile insect technique (SIT) may contribute to the implementation of area-wide integrated pest management strategies, as has been successfully proven with oth

Prediction of equine risk of West Nile virus infection based on dead bird surveillance.

Since the introduction of West Nile Virus (WNV) to the United States in 1999, the efficacy of dead bird surveillance for the prediction of human and veterinary WNV infection has been an issue of debate. We utilized South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control surveillance data from 2003 to determine whether dead bird surveillance accurately predicts equine WNV infection on a county level. We adjusted for human population density as a potential confounder of an association between WNV-positive dead bird counts and mammalian WNV risk. We found a strong positive association bet

Why the growth of arboviral diseases necessitates a new generation of global risk maps and future projections.

Global risk maps are an important tool for assessing the global threat of mosquito and tick-transmitted arboviral diseases. Public health officials increasingly rely on risk maps to understand the drivers of transmission, forecast spread, identify gaps in surveillance, estimate disease burden, and target and evaluate the impact of interventions. Here, we describe how current approaches to mapping arboviral diseases have become unnecessarily siloed, ignoring the strengths and weaknesses of different data types and methods. This places limits on data and model output comparability, uncertainty e

Plasmodium falciparum genomic surveillance reveals spatial and temporal trends, association of genetic and physical distance, and household clustering.

Molecular epidemiology using genomic data can help identify relationships between malaria parasite population structure, malaria transmission intensity, and ultimately help generate actionable data to assess the effectiveness of malaria control strategies. Genomic data, coupled with geographic information systems data, can further identify clusters or hotspots of malaria transmission, parasite genetic and spatial connectivity, and parasite movement by human or mosquito mobility over time and space. In this study, we performed longitudinal genomic surveillance in a cohort of 70 participants ove

Within-host competition and drug resistance in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

Infections with the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum typically comprise multiple strains, especially in high-transmission areas where infectious mosquito bites occur frequently. However, little is known about the dynamics of mixed-strain infections, particularly whether strains sharing a host compete or grow independently. Competition between drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains, if it occurs, could be a crucial determinant of the spread of resistance. We analysed 1341 P. falciparum infections in children from Angola, Ghana and Tanzania and found compelling evidence for competition

Optimized Malaria-antigens delivered by immunostimulating reconstituted influenza virosomes.

Malaria remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in millions of individuals each year. The development of widespread resistance of the parasite to drugs as well as resistance of the transmitting mosquito-vector to insecticides in combination with the poor economic situation of many malaria-endemic countries make the development of an effective and inexpensive treatment and prevention a main focus of research. Vaccines remain to be one of the most cost effective and feasible means of disease control and have remarkable success in the control of many infectious disease: eradication of

Sexually Dimorphic Visual Processing in the Yellow-Fever Mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Flying insects process motion across the visual scene to regulate their ground speed, correct course deviations, and respond to behaviorally relevant stimuli such as avoiding predators or finding hosts. The yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti provides a useful model for studying these visually guided behaviors, as both sexes use vision to track moving features. Approaching a moving target presents mosquitoes with a demanding visual problem: they must extract target motion from the changing visual scene while simultaneously controlling their own flight and responding to potentially dangerous mo

Molecular and Serological Surveillance of Dengue Virus and Vector Dynamics in the Highlands of Southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Dengue fever is an emerging endemic disease in Saudi Arabia; however, important gaps remain regarding transmission dynamics, vector distribution, and serotype circulation in highland areas. This study primarily aimed to investigate dengue virus (DENV) infection and vector occurrence in the highland governorates of the Jazan region. A cross-sectional study enrolled 182 febrile patients tested using RT-qPCR, ELISA, RT-PCR-based serotyping, and rapid diagnostic tests. Concurrent entomological surveillance was conducted using CDC light traps, with morphological and molecular identification of Aede

Larvicidal mechanism of the rare sesquiterpene ishwarol B from Piper alatipetiolatum (Piperaceae) against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles darlingi, and Culex quinquefasciatus (Culicidae): oxidative damage, defense enzyme modulation, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition.

Dengue, Oropouche, lymphatic filariasis, and malaria remain serious public health problems in Brazil, transmitted by Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles darlingi resistant to pyrethroid insecticides. As alternatives, plant-derived natural insecticides have gained attention for their potential. In this study, we evaluated ishwarol B for its larvicidal activity and explored its mechanism of action against these mosquitoes. Ishwarol B exhibited larvicidal activity against all larvae (LC50 from 19.57 to 26.23 μg/mL) and a residual effect of approximately 50 % observed, accompanied
