Delayed development of neural language organization in very preterm born children.

This study investigates neural language organization in very preterm born children compared to control children and examines the relationship between language organization, age, and language performance. Fifty-six preterms and 38 controls (7-12 y) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging language task. Lateralization and signal change were computed for language-relevant brain regions. Younger preterms showed a bilateral language network whereas older preterms revealed left-sided language organization. No age-related differences in language organization were observed in controls. End-to-End Estimation of Hand- and Wrist Forces From Raw Intramuscular EMG Signals Using LSTM Networks.

Processing myoelectrical activity in the forearm has for long been considered a promising framework to allow transradial amputees to control motorized prostheses. In spite of expectations, contemporary muscle-computer interfaces built for this purpose typically fail to satisfy one or more important desiderata, such as accuracy, robustness, and/or naturalness of control, in part due to difficulties in acquiring high-quality signals continuously outside laboratory conditions. In light of such problems, surgically implanted electrodes have been made a viable option that allows for long-term acqui

Modeling eye-head gaze shifts in multiple contexts without motor planning.

During gaze shifts, the eyes and head collaborate to rapidly capture a target (saccade) and fixate it. Accordingly, models of gaze shift control should embed both saccadic and fixation modes and a mechanism for switching between them. We demonstrate a model in which the eye and head platforms are driven by a shared gaze error signal. To limit the number of free parameters, we implement a model reduction approach in which steady-state cerebellar effects at each of their projection sites are lumped with the parameter of that site. The model topology is consistent with anatomy and neurophysiology

Implementation and experimental validation of a hybrid intelligent sliding mode control strategy for induction motor drives.

This paper proposes a hybrid intelligent control strategy for high-performance induction motor drives under field-oriented control (FOC). The proposed architecture combines a radial basis function (RBF) neural network with higher-order non-singular terminal sliding-mode (HONTSM) control to improve robustness against nonlinear dynamics, parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances. The RBF network generates the torque-producing current reference in the speed loop, while the HONTSM compensator enhances disturbance rejection and tracking performance. In the inner loop, a HONTSM current cont

Memcapacitive-Dominated Reservoir Computing with Self-Organizing Nanowire Networks.

Nanowire networks have emerged as a promising platform for physical reservoir computing. However, networks based on memristive switching exhibit inherent limitations in dynamical richness and short-term memory capacity. Memcapacitors are expected to overcome these dynamical constraints through their topology-dependent dynamics. In this work, inspired by the distributed processing of neural systems, we endow Ag nanowire networks with memcapacitive properties via a temperature-modulated fabrication process, realizing a multi-path channel-dependent reservoir system with richer reservoir dynamics

Generative-augmented deep learning framework for scarce-data skin lesion image processing.

PURPOSE: Skin conditions are health conditions that affect millions of people across the globe and are a major health challenge in the world. The existing skin lesion analysis models have poor performance under scarce and imbalanced data conditions, which leads to reduced generalization across diverse lesion types. Most prior models lack adaptability to real-world Internet of Things (IoT)-based acquisition settings and heterogeneous imaging environments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed system combines lesion image acquisition based on IoT with various public datasets to enhance the variab

Altered triple network model connectivity is associated with cognitive function and depressive symptoms in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Late-life cognitive impairment and depression frequently co-occur and share many symptoms. However, the specific neural and clinical factors contributing to both their common and distinct profiles in older adults remain unclear. METHODS: We investigated resting-state correlates of cognitive and depressive symptoms in older adults (n = 248 and n = 95) using clinical, blood, and neuroimaging data. We computed a connectivity matrix across default mode, executive control, and salience networks. Cross-validated elastic net regression identified features reflecting cognitive function

Regional cerebral blood flow at rest in obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Imaging studies have shown brain abnormalities associated with eating behavior (taste perception, food intake, and food reward), neural connectivity, and cognition related to obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate whether obese individuals have changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during fasting and rest using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and whether these differences are associated with body fat and serum levels of leptin, insulin, and glucose. METHODS: For this purpose, rCBF assessed by ([99]mTc)-ECD-SPECT was compared between 10 obese

Resting-state connectivity and network parameter analysis in alcohol-dependent males. A simultaneous EEG-MEG study.

There is supporting evidence of alcohol negative effects on the brain: neuroimaging and psychophysiological studies finding anatomical and functional connectivity (FC) changes associated with the dependence process. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate brain FC and network characteristics of alcohol-dependent individuals in resting state. For this study, we included males diagnosed with alcohol dependence (N = 25) and a group of healthy individuals (N = 23). Simultaneous EEG-MEG (electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic) activity was recorded in 5 min of eyes-closed resting st

Underestimation of extremes in sea level surge reconstruction.

Statistical models are an alternative to numerical models for reconstructing storm surges at a low computational cost. These models directly link surges to metocean variables, i.e., predictors such as atmospheric pressure, wind and waves. Such reconstructions usually underestimate extreme surges. Here, we explore how to reduce biases on extremes using two methods-multiple linear regressions and neural networks-for surge reconstructions. Models with different configurations are tested at 14 long-term tide gauges in the North-East Atlantic. We found that (1) using the wind stress rather than the

The neural characteristics influencing literacy outcome in children with cochlear implants.

Early hearing intervention in children with congenital hearing loss is critical for improving auditory development, speech recognition and both expressive and receptive language, which translates into better educational outcomes and quality of life. In children receiving hearing aids or cochlear implants, both adaptive and potentially maladaptive neural reorganization can mitigate higher-level functions that impact reading. The focus of the present study was to dissect the neural underpinnings of the reading networks in children with cochlear implants and assess how these networks mediate the

Cognitive-Motor Duality in Human M1 and Cerebellum.

The translation of abstract cognitive intention into localised physical action is a defining feature of voluntary behaviour1,2. To achieve this, the brain must maintain a highly regulated preparatory state, yet the macroscopic architecture of this interface remains elusive. Historically, the primary motor cortex has been viewed simply as a strictly contralateral kinematic relay3, making its robust bilateral activation during single-limb preparation a long-standing functional paradox4,5. Here, we show that human motor preparation is driven by two distinct, superimposed neural processes operatin

From Pixel Modification to Generative Synthesis: A Survey of Deep Learning for Image Data Hiding.

This survey presents a structured review of deep learning-based techniques for image data hiding, proposing a three-paradigm taxonomy organized by the method's operational relationship to the carrier image. We classify existing methods into modification-based, synthesis-based, and logic-based approaches. In the modification-based tier, we trace the architectural progression from foundational Convolutional Neural Networks and Generative Adversarial Networks to high-capacity Invertible Neural Networks and Transformers, analyzing their distinct trade-offs between embedding capacity, imperceptibil

Modeling transient mixed flows in sewer systems with data fusion via physics-informed machine learning.

Transitions between free-surface and pressurized flows, known as transient mixed flows, have posed significant challenges in urban drainage systems (UDS), e.g., pipe bursts, road collapses, and geysers. However, traditional mechanistic modeling for mixed flows is challenged by the difficult integration of multi-source data, complex equation forms for the discovery of dynamic processes, and high computational demands. In response, we proposed a data-driven model, TMF-PINN, which utilizes a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) to simulate and invert Transient Mixed Flow (TMF) in sewer networks

Establishing a reliable visual function test and applying it to screening optic nerve disease in onchocercal communities.

The computer Controlled Video Perimetry (CCVP) is a computer screening test for detecting visual function loss caused by onchocerciasis, glaucoma, etc. Installed on portable computers, the CCVP has been shown to be high acceptability in field community investigation. However, it is regarded to be difficult in obtaining reliable results from portable computer screening tests because of human behavioural variants and the lack of standard testing environment. In this paper, we propose an architecture for implementing a more reliable CCVP system. In particular, a self-organising neural network is
