Our experience with 52 patients who had postoperative pancreatitis develop during a nine year period was reviewed to characterize this group, to determine the incidence of complications and to identify variables predictive of complications. Biliary tract procedures (n = 10), colectomy (n = 9) and intestinal resection (n = 9) were the most frequently performed operations preceding pancreatitis. The antitumor drugs adriamycin and daunomycin were evaluated for effects on embryonal and fetal development in the rat and rabbit. Doses of adriamycin ranging from 1-2 mg/kg/day or daunomycin ranging from 1-4 mg/kg/day were administered ip to pregnant rats on days 6-15, 6-9, 9-12 or 12-15 of gestation. Intestinal failure is most commonly treated by the administration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In some patients, however, surgical therapy may increase the ability to use the intestine for nutrition and thereby decrease the complications of TPN therapy. Since 1986, we have cared for 17 patients whose abdomen could not be closed because of bowel edema and loss of abdominal wall compliance. These patients were managed by a technique of visceral packing with the intestines kept in place by a combination of rayon cloth, gauze packs, and retention sutures. The effect of 18 percutaneous abscess drainage procedures on the clinical management of 10 patients with Crohn's disease was evaluated. The results of surgery to relieve intestinal obstruction in 49 patients who were known to have ovarian cancer were studied. All patients had received adjunctive chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy prior to bowel obstruction.
