Despite the widespread use of oat β-glucans as ingredient of foods and dietary supplements, there is insufficient data on their effect on the metabolism of vitamins and minerals. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of including oat bran with a high content of β-glucans (β-glucan) in the diet on the absorption of micronutrients and lipid metabolism in growing rats deficient in vitamins D, group B and trace elements (iron, copper, zinc). Material and methods. After the development of micronutrient deficiency (for 23 days), in order to assess the effect of oat bran (5%) with a hig

The physiological mechanisms involved in the alterations in calcium homeostasis during pregnancy are complex. The fetal acquisition of calcium, for skeletal growth, is obtained by an increase in intestinal calcium absorption in the mother with transplacental calcium transfer to the fetus. The regulation of calcium homeostasis during the transition from the intrauterine to the extrauterine environment is complex and poorly understood. Within the first few hours of life the serum calcium concentrations begins to fall progressively reaching a "trough" value by the second or third day of life and

Background: Ageing is frequently associated with systemic inflammation and cognitive decline, yet the impact of diet and lifestyle factors on these age-related processes remains unexplored. Nutrient deficiencies, particularly in essential vitamins and minerals, may accelerate cognitive decline and heighten inflammation in older adults. Aim: This pilot study aimed to examine how dietary intake, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity affect plasma cytokine levels and cognitive performance in older adults. Methods: Twenty-nine healthy Irish adults, aged 65-85 years participated in the study.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate and rapid assessment of galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase (GALT) activity is critical for the diagnosis of Classical Galactosemia (CG). However, the performance of GALT assays is variable, and there is a lack of evidence to support best practices.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established a rapid quantitative fluorometric GALT assay to evaluate the impact of blood collection-tubes, assay-composition, and sample storage conditions using whole blood (WB) and dried blood spot (DBS) specimens from control individuals, CG patients and individuals with glucose-6-phosphate

Celiac disease (CD) is an important yet under-researched condition among athletes, with the potential to disrupt nutritional strategy, recovery, and performance. The purpose of this structured narrative review is to synthesize the current evidence on nutrient deficiencies, dietary management, and performance-monitoring strategies specific to athletes with CD, and to propose an integrated framework for their nutritional and functional assessment. This review was conducted according to the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) and compiled from literature published in Pub

Non-covalent interactions unavoidably involve a certain disturbance of the electronic density of the interacting systems. Such perturbations are particularly strong when dealing with electron deficient systems such as boron, beryllium, magnesium (pre-p elements) or calcium (a pre-d element) derivatives. Indeed, these compounds have been shown to modify the intrinsic reactivity of the systems interacting with them. In the first part of this paper, we present an overview on (i) how electron deficient systems, acting as Lewis acids, modulate the intrinsic acidity of Lewis bases, explaining for in

Transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) is a bifunctional protein comprising a magnesium (Mg(2+))/cation channel and a kinase domain. We previously demonstrated that vasoactive agents regulate vascular TRPM7. Whether TRPM7 plays a role in the pathophysiology of hypertension and associated cardiovascular dysfunction is unknown. We studied TRPM7 kinase-deficient mice (TRPM7Δkinase; heterozygous for TRPM7 kinase) and wild-type (WT) mice infused with angiotensin II (Ang II; 400 ng/kg per minute, 4 weeks). TRPM7 kinase expression was lower in heart and aorta from TRPM7Δkinase versus WT mi

BACKGROUND: After Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies are frequently reported. In the presence of adequate vitamin D levels, calcium deficiency is caused by a lower efficacy of the intestinal calcium transport.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the use of a simple clinical score quantifying bowel habits (fecal score [FS]) correlates with the degree of secondary hyperparathyroidism that arises to compensate for calcium deficiency postsurgery.
SETTING: Large peripheral hospital.
METHODS: Seventy-five patients supplemented with calcium and vitamin D were prospectively

In most children with ADHD the cause of the disease is not exactly known, and its etiology is multifactorial. The conventional treatment is based on the combination of behavioral and psychological therapy and the pharmacotherapy. The pharmacotherapy has a high effectiveness in ADHD treatment, but it is often associated with undesirable side effects, such as: loss of appetite and weight, growth inhibition, abdominal pain, headaches, sleeping problems and increased blood pressure. In the recent years, much attention was devoted to the issue of an appropriate diet in this disease, especially when

Familial hypomagnesemia is a rare human disorder caused by renal or intestinal magnesium (Mg(2+)) wasting, which may lead to symptoms of Mg(2+) depletion such as tetany, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmias. Our knowledge of the physiology of Mg(2+) (re)absorption, particularly the luminal uptake of Mg(2+) along the nephron, has benefitted from positional cloning approaches in families with Mg(2+) reabsorption disorders; however, basolateral Mg(2+) transport and its regulation are still poorly understood. Here, by using a candidate screening approach, we identified CNNM2 as a gene involved in ren

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the long-term effects of maternal/postnatal magnesium (Mg) restriction on adiposity, glucose tolerance, and insulin secretion in the offspring and the probable biochemical mechanisms associated with them.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Female weanling Wistar/NIN (WNIN) rats received a control diet or 70% Mg-restricted (MgR) diet for 9 weeks and mated with control males. A third of the restricted dams were shifted to control diet from parturition. Half of the pups born to the remaining restricted dams were weaned on to control diet, while the other half continued on MgR die

Electrolyte disturbances are common in patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) especially during long-term treatments. Unlike potassium, little is known of how magnesium is affected in these patients. This study was carried out to determine the serum and urinary concentration of magnesium in patients with CHF who were treated with lisinopril [Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor (ACEI)], frusemide (diuretic) and digoxin, at baseline, 2 weeks and 4 weeks. 45 patients (Group I; 24 male, 21 female; average age 49.7 years) with CHF, New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class II, III were matc

In 78 patients with hypomagnesemia in urolithiasis the clinical course of disease was established in relation to therapy and dynamics of changes of serum magnesium levels. Almost 70% of patients had multiple, bilateral or recurrent nephrolithiasis or nephrocalcinosis. 70% of patients had Ca-oxalate stones or bilateral nephrocalcinosis. In 52% of patients a long-term magnesium supplementation was necessary. Significant progress of nephrolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis was observed in 80% of patients with permanent hypomagnesemia and in 4% of patients with normalization of serum magnesium level.

OBJECTIVE: Familial hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia (HSH) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by a mutation in the transient receptor potential melastatin 6 (TRPM6) gene and is characterized by selective magnesium malabsorption. Affected cases are usually diagnosed during infancy and usually present with seizures due to hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia. Irreversible neurological deficits and arrhythmias can be observed without appropriate treatment. The aim was to evaluate the long-term follow-up of patients with genetically confirmed HSH.
METHODS: A total of six patients with

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Identification of the mechanisms of magnesium absorption and reabsorption has markedly enhanced our understanding of the causes of hypomagnesemia.
RECENT FINDINGS: New gastrointestinal and renal causes of hypomagnesemia have been recently documented.
SUMMARY: The recognition of new mechanisms and causes of magnesium absorption and reabsorption should enhance the ability to monitor patients at risk for hypomagnesemia and improve our ability to mitigate the serious symptoms associated with this disorder.

Reduced daily intake of magnesium (Mg(2+)) is suggested to contribute to depression. Indeed, preclinical studies show dietary magnesium restriction (MgR) elicits enhanced depression-like behaviour establishing a causal relationship. Amongst other mechanisms, Mg(2+) gates the activity of N-methyl-D-asparte (NMDA) receptors; however, it is not known whether reduced dietary Mg(2+) intake can indeed affect brain NMDA receptor complexes. Thus, the aim of the current study was to reveal whether MgR induces changes in brain NMDA receptor subunit composition that would indicate altered NMDA receptor r
