Background and Objectives: Climate change is modifying the ecological and climatic conditions that influence the distribution and activity of arthropod vectors. Rising temperatures and prolonged warm seasons have favored the establishment of Aedes albopictus in Mediterranean regions, increasing the risk of autochthonous Dengue transmission. Therefore, this study describes the evolution of Dengue surveillance in Sardinia between 2018 and 2024, integrating human and entomological data to assess trends, system performance, and implications for prevention and control. BACKGROUND: Dengue virus (DENV) is a flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries and has four serotypes (DENV1-4). Aedes aegypti, as the main transmission vector of DENV, exhibits strong infectivity and transmission. With the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the Ae. aegypti-DENV interaction, the transcriptome changes in DENV-2-infected Aag2 cells were studied to describe the immune responses of mosquitoes using the Ae. aegypti Aag2 cell line as a model.
METHODS: RNAseq technology was used to sequence the transcripts of the Ae. aegypti

Dengue fever is mosquito borne viral disease caused by dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. In recent years the dengue has spread rapidly to several regions and it becomes a major public health menace globally. Dengue transmission is strongly influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and rainfall. In the present study, a climate driven dengue model was developed and predicted areas vulnerable for dengue transmission under the present and future climate change scenarios in India. The study also projected the dengue distribution risk map using representative concentrat

BACKGROUND: India is endemic to Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and recurrent outbreaks occur mainly in rice growing areas. Pigs are considered to be the amplifying host for JEV and infection in gestating pigs results in reproductive failure. Most studies conducted on JEV infection in Indian pigs have been serological surveys and very little is known about JEV genotypes circulating in pigs. So the potential risk posed by pigs in JEV transmission and the genetic relationship between viruses circulating in pigs, mosquitoes and humans is poorly understood.

In August 2008, after 10 years of apparent silence, West Nile virus (WNV) infection re-emerged in northern Italy, spreading through the territories of three regions. In the following years, new cases occurred in the same area and additional foci of infection were observed in central and southern Italy, involving also Sicily and Sardinia islands. The Italian Ministry of Health ordered to test by RT-PCR all blood and organ donors from 15th June to 15th November of each year in the infected areas. The period at risk of WNV transmission was defined on the basis of literature data, but a more scien

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission-blocking vaccines (TBVs) targeting parasite transmission by mosquitoes represent a valuable public health tool for malaria control and elimination through herd immunity in the community. Pfs230, a surface protein expressed in gametocytes and gametes of Plasmodium falciparum, plays a critical role in gamete fertilization and further development within mosquitoes. Prior studies have advanced the N-terminal pro-domain (Pro) and domain 1 (D1) of Pfs230 as a putative TBV target. However, whether other Pfs230 domains function as TBV candidates needs further study.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue fever, a disease whose transmission is strongly dependent on warm, humid climates. While the geographical and seasonal patterns of dengue are well-established, systematic projections of how climate change will affect the distribution of Aedes aegypti and dengue transmission risk in China remain limited.
METHOD: We integrated a phenological model with a dynamical mathematical model to project the future distribution and population dynamics of Aedes aegypti under multiple Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). We assessed life-cycle compl

Ixodes ricinus and Hyalomma excavatum are two widely dispersed vectors of pathogens, including those that cause Lyme disease and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in the human population. Recently developed, plant-derived, mosquito-repellent blends have shown promise against other vector clades, and this study assesses these blends as potential tick repellents. Blends of (+)-borneol, bornyl acetate, eugenol, isoeugenol and camphor were assessed in two formats: blends 3 and 4. Ticks were assessed using the moving object bioassay (Ixodes) or a dual-choice behavioural assay (Hyalomma). Both blends

A new series of benzo[h]quinoline-containing heterocycles was synthesized via reactions of benzo[h]quinolinyl-2(3H)-furanone with some nitrogen bidentate nucleophiles, leading to the formation of pyridazinone, pyrrolinone, benzimidazole, and benzoxazinone derivatives. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their insecticidal activity against Culex pipiens L. larvae. Among these, pyridazinone 3 demonstrated the highest insecticidal activity with an LC50 value of 1.4 µg/mL (3.40 µM), significantly outperforming the reference insecticide chlorpyrifos. Molecular docking studies were conducte

BACKGROUND: Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) belong to a group of viral infectious diseases that interfere with the blood's clotting mechanism. VHF has a wide host range, including bats, rodents, or arthropods such as mosquitoes and ticks. Most VHFs emerge suddenly as outbreaks, making it difficult to predict occurrence. To be responsive to such outbreaks, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) provides high-end molecular and genomic diagnostics capability for surveillance of suspected VHFs in samples collected from health facilities across the country.

Understanding the behavior and ecology of local malaria vectors is essential for the effectiveness of the commonly used vector-targeted malaria control tools in areas of low malaria transmission. This study was conducted to determine species composition, biting behavior and infectivity of the major Anopheles vectors of Plasmodium falciparum in low transmission settings in central Senegal. Adult mosquitoes were collected using human landing catches during 2 consecutive nights and Pyrethrum Spray Catches in 30-40 randomly selected rooms, from July 2017 to December 2018 in 3 villages. BACKGROUND: Although vector-borne zoonotic diseases are a major public health threat globally, they are usually neglected, especially among resource-constrained countries, including those in sub-Saharan Africa. This scoping review examined the current knowledge and identified research gaps of vector-borne zoonotic pathogens in Zambia.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Major scientific databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, CABI, Scientific Information Database (SID)) were searched for articles describing vector-borne (mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and tsetse flies) zoonotic pathogens in Za

BACKGROUND: In a recent study using DNA barcoding, we identified the plants fed upon by four Afro-tropical mosquito species that vector dengue, malaria, and Rift Valley fever. Herein, we have expanded on this study by investigating the role of three of the plants, Pithecellobium dulce (Fabaceae), Leonotis nepetifolia (Lamiaceae), and Opuntia ficus-indica (Cactaceae), on the survival, fecundity, and egg viability of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti.
METHODS: We tested these effects using females that received (i) an initial three rations of blood meals and (ii) no blood meal at all. Two control

After a centenary fight against malaria, Brazil has seen an opportunity for change with the proposal of the malaria elimination policy set by the Brazilian government, in line with malaria elimination policies in other Latin American countries. Brazilian malaria experts regard eliminating malaria by 2030 to be within reach. Herein we evaluated the likelihood that malaria elimination can be accomplished in Brazil through systematic review of the literature on malaria elimination in Brazil and epidemiological analysis. Fifty-two articles referring to malaria eradication/elimination in Brazil wer

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an important reemerging human pathogen transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus causes an acute febrile illness, chikungunya fever, which is characterized by headache, rash, and debilitating (poly)arthralgia that can reside for months to years after infection. Currently, effective antiviral therapies and vaccines are lacking. Due to the high morbidity and economic burden in the countries affected by CHIKV, there is a strong need for new strategies to inhibit CHIKV replication. The serotonergic drug 5-nonyloxytryptamine (5-NT) was previously identified as a potential ho

Flaviviruses (FVs) are arthropod-borne viruses of medical and veterinary importance. Numerous species of FVs have been isolated from various host; mainly humans, animals, ticks, and mosquitoes. Certain FVs are extremely host-specific; at the same time, some FVs can infect an extensive range of species. Based on published literatures, 11 species of FVs have been detected from diverse host species in Malaysia. In humans, dengue virus and Japanese encephalitis virus have been reported since 1901 and 1942. In animals, the Batu Cave virus, Sitiawan virus, Carey Island, Tembusu virus, Duck Tembusu v
