Bronchoscopic interventions for bronchopleural fistulas.

Bronchopleural fistula is a potentially fatal disease most often caused after pneumonectomy. Concomitant problems such as pulmonary infection and respiratory failure are typically the main contributors to patient mortality because of the improper contact between the bronchial and pleural cavity. Therefore, bronchopleural fistulas need immediate treatment, which requires the accurate location and timely closure of the fistula. Currently, bronchoscopic interventions, because of their flexibility and versatility, are reliable alternative therapies in patients for whom surgical intervention is uns

Advances in the development of biodegradable coronary stents: A translational perspective.

Implantation of cardiovascular stents is an important therapeutic method to treat coronary artery diseases. Bare-metal and drug-eluting stents show promising clinical outcomes, however, their permanent presence may create complications. In recent years, numerous preclinical and clinical trials have evaluated the properties of bioresorbable stents, including polymer and magnesium-based stents. Three-dimensional (3D) printed-shape-memory polymeric materials enable the self-deployment of stents and provide a novel approach for individualized treatment. Novel bioresorbable metallic stents such as

Miniaturized fiber-coupled confocal fluorescence microscope with an electrowetting variable focus lens using no moving parts.

We report a miniature, lightweight fiber-coupled confocal fluorescence microscope that incorporates an electrowetting variable focus lens to provide axial scanning for full three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Lateral scanning is accomplished by coupling our device to a laser-scanning confocal microscope through a coherent imaging fiber-bundle. The optical components of the device are combined in a custom 3D-printed adapter with an assembled weight of <2  g that can be mounted onto the head of a mouse. Confocal sectioning provides an axial resolution of ∼12  μm and an axial scan range of ∼80  μm. T

Application of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing and mixed reality technologies in a novel mandibular reconstruction plate system.

Mandibular reconstruction following oral and maxillofacial tumor resection is essential for restoring occlusion and facial appearance. Conventional methods require intraoperative bending of plates, increasing surgical time and risking metal fatigue and plate fracture. Patient-specific implants (PSIs), created via preoperative computed tomography (CT) data and three-dimensional (3D) metal printing, have improved surgical accuracy and reduced operation times. In Japan, Cosmofix® is the only PSI system available, but it lacks osteotomy guides, complicating precise bone cuts and screw insertion an

A microCT-based platform to quantify drug targeting.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent and debilitating complication of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries and orthopedic procedures. Prophylactic dosing of botulinum toxin type A (BTxA) holds potential as a novel treatment option if accurately distributed throughout soft-tissue volumes where protection is clinically desired. We developed a high-resolution, microcomputed tomography (microCT)-based imaging strategy to assess drug distribution and validated this platform by quantifying distribution achieved via a prototype delivery system versus a single-bolus injection. METHOD

DICOM segmentation and STL creation for 3D printing: a process and software package comparison for osseous anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Extracting and three-dimensional (3D) printing an organ in a region of interest in DICOM images typically calls for segmentation as a first step in support of 3D printing. The DICOM images are not exported to STL data immediately, but segmentation masks are exported to STL models. After primary and secondary processing, including noise removal and hole correction, the STL data can be 3D printed. The quality of the 3D model is directly related to the quality of the STL data. This study focuses and reports on the DICOM to STL segmentation performance for nine software packages. METH

Malignant melanoma presenting as a thyroid mass with synchronous retroperitoneal metastases in a 55-year-old male: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma (MM) is an aggressive tumor characterized by a high tendency for early metastasis. Although most cases have identifiable primary sites, melanoma of unknown primary (MUP) presents as metastatic disease without detectable primary lesions. MM presenting as a thyroid mass with concurrent metastasis to the spleen-kidney interspace is extremely rare, and the occult nature of the primary lesion also poses a significant diagnostic challenge, often leading to confusion with aggressive primary thyroid malignancies. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year-old male with an unremarkable
