The MSH-like activity of pineal hormone E5 in vivo and in vitro experiment.

Further experiments have revealed that the polypeptidic hormone E5 has a MSK-like effect, as experimentally demonstrated on the frog skin. In Rana esculenta, 30-120 min after a subcutaneous injection of 0.2 mg purified E5B or E5P/100 g b.w., the skin blackened and the effect lasted for about two hours. A comparable effect was induced by incubating the fragment of frog abdominal skin with a similar solution of E5. Sera of forty insulin-treated Nigerian diabetics attending the outpatients clinic of the University College Hospital (U.C.H.), Ibadan, and an equal number of non-diabetic control subjects matched for age, sex and social status were tested for presence of complement fixing (CF) antibodies against five viruses: Coxsackie A and B1, mumps rubella and enterovirus group antigen. The evolution of the methyl rot reaction (MRT), expressed by the pH dynamics in the first 18 hours was examined. A medium made of caseine or soya hydrolysate distributed in small volumes, was experimented versus a control broth made of meat peptone (Clark-Lubs). For Klebsiella the results showed that in the control group the pH acidifies and remains low, thus mimicking a positive reaction. [The incidence of influenzal, para-influenzal and adenoviral antigens in keratoconjunctivitis patients during immunization with NIVGRIP vaccine].

Repeated intranasal administrations of NIVGRIP, influenza inactivated vaccine, to patients with chronic recurrent keratoconjunctivitis, led to a significant reduction of respiratory virus incidence, as revealed by the immunofluorescence test in the conjunctive epithelial cells. The effect is probably due to endogenous interferon stimulation by the vaccine, at the nasopharyngeal level.

[Inframicrobiological research on cases of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus].

A group of 55 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, aged from 8 to 40 years, was followed and compared to a group of controls, in view of detecting a possible relation between the presence of inframicrobial agents and diabetes pathogenesis. The investigations revealed, in patients, significantly higher positivity rate of antibodies against mumps (27% versus 16.3% in controls), parainfluenza type 1 (45.4% versus 29.1%) and Epstein-Barr (54.5% versus 10.9%) viruses, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (43.6 versus 18.2%).

We report a 58-year-old male patient with acute kidney injury (AKI), who eventually developed anuria secondary to acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) following acute pyelonephritis.
