Modelling maternal cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The maternal cardiovascular system undergoes a profound transformation during pregnancy. Disordered cardiovascular adaptation is associated with pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction; however, these complications remain challenging to predict and manage. Computational modelling presents an opportunity to study the maternal circulation with unprecedented flexibility. We conducted a scoping review to assess the potential utility of computational models for studying maternal cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy and providing insights into disease. We aimed to identify research

Evolutionary chemical learning in dimerization networks.

We present a framework for chemical learning based on competitive dimerization networks (CDNs)-systems in which multiple molecular species, e.g., proteins or DNA-RNA oligomers, reversibly bind to form dimers. We show numerically that these networks can, in principle, be trained in vitro through directed evolution, enabling the implementation of complex learning tasks such as multiclass classification without digital hardware or prior knowledge of all microscopic association constants. Each molecular species functions analogously to a neuron, with binding affinities acting as tunable synaptic w

PiProteline: An R Package for Integrated Proteomics Data Analysis, from Label-Free Quantitation to Systems Biology.

The demand for user-friendly applications to support biologists in analyzing high-throughput proteomics data remains a pressing challenge. Given the complexity and the multiple intermediate steps involved, this process is time-consuming and often requires specialized computational skills. To simplify and accelerate the exploration of proteomics data, we present PiProteline, an R package designed to operate on high-dimensional data matrices assembled from the output of any search engine commonly used in bottom-up proteomics experiments. In addition to data preprocessing and descriptive statisti

Neural network-based computational analysis of pressure-driven nonlinear waves in gas-liquid mixtures and oil transportation pipelines.

In this work, we develop a computational approach for the analytical investigation of the dynamics of waves in a nonlinear system described by the Kudryashov-Sinelshchikov equation which is a nonlinear partial differential equation of (1+1) dimensions that models the propagation of pressure waves in bubbly liquids, multiphase flow systems, oil pipeline transport, and nonlinear acoustics. In the suggested approach, we use the combination of a multilayer feedforward artificial neural network and the Riccati sub-equation method where an exact solution to the Riccati auxiliary equation is used as

Recurrent connections facilitate occluded object recognition by explaining-away.

Despite the ubiquity of recurrent connections in the brain, their role in visual processing is less understood than that of feedforward connections. Occluded object recognition, an important cognitive capacity, is thought to rely on recurrent processing of visual information, but it remains unclear whether and how recurrent processing improves recognition of occluded objects. Using convolutional models of the visual system, we demonstrate how a distinct form of computation arises in recurrent-but not feedforward-networks that leverages information about the occluder to "explain-away" the occlu

Conservative Black Hole Scattering at Fifth Post-Minkowskian and Second Self-Force Order.

Using the worldline quantum field theory formalism, we compute conservative contributions to the scattering angle and impulse for classical black hole scattering at fifth post-Minkowskian and second self-force order. This four-loop calculation involves nonplanar Feynman integrals and requires advanced integration-by-parts reduction, novel differential-equation strategies, and efficient boundary-integral algorithms to solve a system of hundreds of master integrals in four integral families on high-performance computing systems. The resulting function space includes multiple polylogarithms as we

The Difference between PC-Based and Immersive Virtual Reality Food Purchase Environments on Useability, Presence, and Physiological Responses.

Computer simulations used to study food purchasing behavior can be separated into low immersion virtual environments (LIVE), which use personal computers and standard monitors to display a scene, and high immersion virtual environments (HIVE) which use virtual reality technology such as head-mounted displays to display a scene. These methods may differ in their ability to create feelings of presence or cybersickness that would influence the usefulness of these approaches. In this present study, thirty-one adults experienced a virtual supermarket or fast-food restaurant using a LIVE system or a

[Key technologies for intelligent brain-computer interaction based on magnetoencephalography].

Brain-computer interaction (BCI) is a transformative human-computer interaction, which aims to bypass the peripheral nerve and muscle system and directly convert the perception, imagery or thinking activities of cranial nerves into actions for further improving the quality of human life. Magnetoencephalogram (MEG) measures the magnetic field generated by the electrical activity of neurons. It has the unique advantages of non-contact measurement, high temporal and spatial resolution, and convenient preparation. It is a new BCI driving signal. MEG-BCI research has important brain science signifi

Disgust selectively dampens value-independent risk-taking for potential gains.

Despite intricate interactions between emotion and decision making, the underlying cognitive mechanisms that govern their relationship remain elusive. Recent theoretical and empirical advances suggest that preferences in risky decision making can arise from the computation of subjective utility (value-dependent) or direct approach-avoidance action tendencies (value-independent). Here, 48 participants performed two gambling tasks (accept/reject and choice selection tasks) under the emotion manipulation (neutral versus disgust) to investigate how decision context and emotion may influence risk p

[Dynamic mesh of carpal scaphoid].

Despite the use of cannulated compression screws, it is still difficult to screw non-displaced fractures of the scaphoid percutaneously. That is due in particular to the difficulty in assessing the correct position for the guide pin from the 2D fluoroscopic images. This work is designed to enable 3D visualisation of the scaphoid during surgical operations by using the technique of dynamic meshing and having the image appearing on a computer screen rather than as a mental image. In this context, the MEFP3C software includes applications for converting a generic scaphoid into a virtual scaphoid,

[Effect of Y-25130 on gastric motility in anesthetized rats].

We developed an automatic analyzing system using a personal computer to evaluate gastric motility objectively. Gastric motility was divided into three elements: motility index, amplitude and frequency. These elements analyzed with both computer and manual methods closely correlated with each other (R2 = 0.943, 0.985 and 0.986, respectively). The effect of Y-25130 on gastric motility was investigated in anesthetized rats with the automatic analyzing system. Intravenous administration of Y-25130 increased both spontaneous and cisplatin-reduced gastric motility. The effect of Y-25130 on spontaneo

Local Pair Natural Orbital-Based Coupled-Cluster Theory through Full Quadruples (DLPNO-CCSDTQ).

In this work, we implement a local pair natural orbital-based coupled-cluster method through the full treatment of quadruple excitations (CCSDTQ). The domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) approach, which has successfully been applied to lower levels of coupled-cluster theory, is utilized in our algorithm, and thus our algorithm is called DLPNO-CCSDTQ. For simplicity in the working equations and in the implementation, we t1-dress the two-electron integrals as well as Fock matrix elements. Our method can recover CCSDTQ-CCSDT and CCSDTQ-CCSDT(Q) energy differences on the order of 0.01-

Pericardial artery lymphoma in a patient with dermatomyositis: A case report.

A woman in her 60s presented with erythema on both elbows, dyspnea on exertion, discomfort, and swelling of the left upper extremity, followed by swelling and myalgia of the right upper and lower extremities. She was diagnosed with anti-transcriptional intermediary factor 1-γ antibody-positive dermatomyositis with interstitial pneumonia. The initial screening tests for malignant diseases including contrast-enhanced computed tomography, upper and lower endoscopy, and gynecological examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. The patient experienced two recurrent episodes of muscle weak

Putting computational models of immunity to the test-An invited challenge to predict B.pertussis vaccination responses.

Systems vaccinology studies have been used to build computational models that predict individual vaccine responses and identify the factors contributing to differences in outcome. Comparing such models is challenging due to variability in study designs. To address this, we established a community resource to compare models predicting B. pertussis booster responses and generate experimental data for the explicit purpose of model evaluation. We here describe our second computational prediction challenge using this resource, where we benchmarked 49 algorithms from 53 scientists. We found that the

A tree-parenchyma coupled model for lung ventilation simulation.

In this article, we develop a lung ventilation model. The parenchyma is described as an elastic homogenized media. It is irrigated by a space-filling dyadic resistive pipe network, which represents the tracheobronchial tree. In this model, the tree and the parenchyma are strongly coupled. The tree induces an extra viscous term in the system constitutive relation, which leads, in the finite element framework, to a full matrix. We consider an efficient algorithm that takes advantage of the tree structure to enable a fast matrix-vector product computation. This framework can be used to model both

Extension of the AMBER force-field for the study of large nitroxides in condensed phases: an ab initio parameterization.

The popular AMBER force-field has been extended to provide an accurate description of large and flexible nitroxide free-radicals in condensed phases. New atom types have been included, and relevant parameters have been fitted based on geometries, vibrational frequencies and potential energy surfaces computed at the DFT level for several different classes of nitroxides, both in vacuo and in different solvents. The resulting computational tool is capable of providing reliable structures, vibrational frequencies, relative energies and spectroscopic observables for large and flexible nitroxide sys

Hydrocode simulations of air and water shocks for facility vulnerability assessments.

Hydrocodes are widely used in the study of explosive systems but their use in routine facility vulnerability assessments has been limited due to the computational resources typically required. These requirements are due to the fact that the majority of hydrocodes have been developed primarily for the simulation of weapon-scale phenomena. It is not practical to use these same numerical frameworks on the large domains found in facility vulnerability studies. Here, a hydrocode formulated specifically for facility vulnerability assessments is reviewed. Techniques used to accurately represent the e
