Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation: relationship between different probe types and procedure time on length and extent of osteonecrosis in dog long bones.

PURPOSE: We have been using radiofrequency ablation for the percutaneous treatment of osteoid osteoma since 2001. Frequently, lesions are located near the joint surface, involve the vertebral body or are close to major nerves. We seek to determine whether radiofrequency ablation (RFA) can be used safely in these cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 65 lesions were induced in 4 dogs. Each dog underwent RFA on the diaphysis of long bones, as well as femoral and humeral heads. Four different sessions were carried out by using 1- and 2-cm probes with or without a cool-tip system and by varyin

Free vascularized bone graft from the lateral epicondylar region of the humerus for treatment of scaphoid nonunion.

BACKGROUND: Free vascularized bone grafting (FVBG) has become one of the essential methods for treating scaphoid nonunion complicated by avascular necrosis. However, commonly used bone graft, including the medial femoral condyle bone graft and iliac crest bone graft, still present challenges such as a high rate of donor site complications and variations of vascular pedicle. In this study, we have introduced a novel bone graft-the lateral humeral condyle bone graft with the posterior branch of the radial collateral artery (PBRCA) as the vascular pedicle-as an alternative option, with the aim of

Dual tension band wiring for adolescent supracondylar fractures of the humerus: mechanical assessment and a clinical series.

BACKGROUND: The optimal fixation technique of adolescent supracondylar fractures of the humerus (A-SCFH) remains inconclusive. To prove the efficacy of Dual Tension Band Wiring (DTBW), the mechanical performance was compared to the other pinning constructs, i.e., Lateral Divergent Pining (LDP), Cross Pining (CP) and Dual CP. The clinical outcomes of the DTBW in A-SCFH were retrospectively described. METHODS: Bone specimens with a supracondylar fracture acquired from computed tomography images of a patient were fabricated using a three-dimensional printing technique. The fracture was stabilize

Incidence, Risk Factors, and Definition for Nonunion in Pediatric Lateral Condyle Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral condyle fractures are a common pediatric elbow injury. Nonunion is a known complication of this injury but its incidence and causative risk factors are unknown. Further, a clear and consistent definition of nonunion for pediatric lateral condyle fractures does not exist. The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of nonunion, the risk factors associated with it and to provide a clear definition. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all pediatric lateral condyle fractures treated at an urban, tertiary pediatric care center between 2001 and 2014. Data collected

Double plating for bicolumnar distal humerus fractures in the elderly.

Distal humerus fractures are uncommon injuries requiring specific clinical and radiographic analysis in order to plan the optimal therapeutic strategy. In particular, bicolumnar distal humerus fractures (Type A2, A3 and C) are complex fractures. In the last years, double plating fixation became the standard treatment: this procedure helped surgeons to obtain a stable and anatomical fixation and an early mobilization, which is the main outcome for obtaining valuable functional results. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the use of open bicolumnar 90-90 plating for fixation of acute fragi

Closed Reduction and Percutaneous Pinning of Displaced Pediatric Lateral Condyle Fractures of the Humerus: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: In treating pediatric lateral condyle fractures (LCFs) of the humerus, closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) is an attractive alternative to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) because of the potential decrease in tissue injury, shorter surgical times, and faster functional recovery. However, there is limited information available regarding its outcome. METHODS: The data on 191 pediatric LCFs [163 fractures (85%) treated with ORIF (group 1) and 28 fractures (15%) treated with CRPP (group 2)], who were followed for over 12 weeks, was included in the present analy

Treatment of high-energy supracondylar/intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus.

Operative treatment of high-energy intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus is challenging and controversial. We conducted a retrospective study at a Level I trauma center to evaluate the results of a specific treatment protocol. Seventy-one patients were treated through a posterior olecranon osteotomy. Capsulectomy was performed in patients who perceived their functional range of motion to be limited after an average of 10~months. Clinical followup consisted of physical examination, radiography, and completion of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Aver

Open reduction and internal fixation of an apparent capitellar fracture using an extended lateral exposure.

Apparent fractures of the capitellum are often more complex involving the trochlea and the posterior aspect of the lateral column. Many of these fractures can be addressed through an extended lateral exposure, but fixation techniques specific to small, nearly entirely articular fragments will be necessary. When the fracture fragments do not fit, there is usually posterior impaction of the lateral column and sometimes the posterior trochlea.

In Supracondylar Humerus Fractures With Nerve Injury, Does Time to Surgery Impact Recovery?

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus (SCH) fractures are common and present with associated nerve injuries in 11% to 42% of cases. Historically, SCH fractures with neurological compromise warranted urgent surgical intervention. A recent study showed that treatment delay is acceptable in patients with isolated anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) injury. Though indications for urgent treatment are relaxing, no studies have evaluated the need for urgent surgical treatment for other nerve injuries associated with SCH fractures. The aim of this study was to determine if the timing of surgical interventi

A Modified Reverse Right-angled Triangle Osteotomy Using the Lateral Approach for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Cubitus Varus Deformity in Children.

BACKGROUND: Cubitus varus deformity is a complex 3-dimensional deformity. Various osteotomies have been introduced to correct this deformity, however, there is no consensus on the best procedure to correct the deformity while avoiding complications. In this retrospective study, we used a modified inverse right-angled triangle osteotomy to treat 22 children with posttraumatic cubitus varus deformity. The primary objective was to evaluate this technique by presenting its clinical and radiologic results. METHODS: Twenty-two consecutive patients with a cubitus varus deformity underwent a modified
