We administered an anonymous survey to assess knowledge, attitudes, and prevention practices related to the Zika virus among pregnant women residing in Texas. Multivariate logistic regression models controlling for age, race/ethnicity, education, and number of years in the United States assessed differences between women born in outbreak areas (N = 390) versus those born in the United States (N = 249). Results demonstrated that most women wanted more information on the Zika virus and desired to obtain it from their physician. The majority did not know that the Zika virus could be spread throug

In excess of 75 arboviruses have been identified in Australia, some of which are now well established as causative agents of debilitating diseases. These include Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, and Murray Valley encephalitis virus, each of which may be detected by both antibody-based recognition and molecular typing. However, for most of the remaining arboviruses that may be associated with pathology in humans, routine tests are not available to diagnose infection. A number of these so-called 'neglected' or 'orphan' arboviruses that are indigenous to Australia might have been infecting

BACKGROUND: Understanding mechanisms that contribute to viral dissemination in mosquito vectors will contribute to our ability to interfere with the transmission of viral pathogens that impact public health. The expression of genes in two Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus populations from Florida with known differences in vector competence to West Nile virus (WNV) were compared using high throughput sequencing.
RESULTS: A total of 15,176 transcripts were combined for comparison of expression differences between the two populations and 118 transcripts were differentially expressed (p < 0.05). The

Arboviral infections have repeatedly been reported in the republic of Djibouti, consistent with the fact that essential vectors for arboviral diseases are endemic in the region. However, there is a limited recent information regarding arbovirus circulation, and the associated risk predictors to human exposure are largely unknown. We performed, from November 2010 to February 2011 in the Djibouti city general population, a cross-sectional ELISA and sero-neutralisation-based sero-epidemiological analysis nested in a household cohort, which investigated the arboviral infection prevalence and risk

BACKGROUND: Housing conditions play a fundamental role in infectious diseases transmission, particularly in endemic regions. Structural modifications to homes-such as screened windows and doors, sealed eaves, elevated flooring, and insecticide-treated barriers-are increasingly recognized as key strategies for reducing mosquito entry and, consequently, malaria risk. Similarly, improved latrine, proper waste disposal, and the possibility to hand wash can help to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. However, their effectiveness and feasibility vary across geographical and soc

BACKGROUND: The malaria control programmes are facing a challenge due to a rapidly increasing resistance to currently available synthetic insecticides. Medicinal plants offer a promising alternative for mosquito control, addressing environmental and resistance concerns. The study aimed to assess the larvicidal and adulticidal effects of crude extracts and fractions of selected Ethiopian medicinal plants.
METHODS: Methanol crude extract/fractions of leaves of Croton macrostachyus (Euphorbiaceae) and Dodonaea angustifolia (Sapindaceae), rhizomes of Kniphofia foliosa (Asphodelaceae) and roots of…

The African continent carries the greatest malaria burden in the world. Falciparum malaria especially has long been the leading cause of death in Africa. Climate, economic factors, geographical location, human intervention and unstable security are factors influencing malaria transmission. Due to repeated infections and early interventions, the proportion of clinically atypical malaria or asymptomatic plasmodium carriers has increased significantly, which easily lead to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. African countries have made certain progress in malaria control and elimination, including

Viruses have developed sophisticated strategies to control metabolic activity of infected cells in order to supply replication machinery with energy and metabolites. Dengue virus (DENV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus responsible for dengue fever, is no exception. Previous reports have documented DENV interactions with metabolic pathways and shown in particular that glycolysis is increased in DENV-infected cells. However, underlying molecular mechanisms are still poorly characterized and dependence of DENV on this pathway has not been investigated in details yet. Here, we identified an interactio

Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti, the main vector of Dengue and Yellow Fever viruses, is present in all the northern and central provinces of Argentina. During 2009, a Dengue outbreak spread broadly throughout the country, causing 27,752 infections in 13 provinces. In Argentina, little is known about the demographic history of this vector, which suffered a drastic decrease in abundance and distribution during a major control campaign performed in the Americas between 1950 and 1960. With the aim of uncovering the past and present events that determined the present distribution of the genetic variabili

Lymphatic filariasis has been targeted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be eliminated by the year 2020. In addition to chemotherapy and vector control, the control of reservoir hosts is necessary for the control program to succeed. Malayan filariasis, caused by Brugia malayi, is endemic in the South of Thailand where domestic cats serve as the major reservoir host. However, in nature, domestic cats also carry B. pahangi, Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens infections and it is difficult to distinguish the different filarial species from each other just by morphology. To assess the burde

Dengue fever is one of the most serious public health issues in tropical and subtropical regions, transmitted by the mosquito Aedes. There are four serotypes of the Dengue virus [DENV, types 1-4]. Every year, millions of people contract dengue infection. Symptoms range from fever to the more complicated condition of hemorrhagic fever. Vector control remains an important tool for preventing dengue, but no antiviral drugs are available to date. Recent progress in prevention has been achieved through vaccine development with licensed vaccines such as Dengvaxia and TAK-003. Both are demonstrating

Dengue is the disease caused by 1 of 4 distinct, but closely related dengue viruses (DENV-1-4) that are transmitted by Aedes spp. mosquito vectors. It is the most common arboviral disease worldwide, with the greatest burden in tropical and sub-tropical regions. In the absence of effective prevention and control measures, dengue is projected to increase in both disease burden and geographic range. Given its increasing importance as an etiology of fever in the returning traveler or the possibility of local transmission in regions in the United States with competent vectors, as well as the risk f

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus. The emergence of CHIKV infection has raised global concern, and there is a growing need to develop safe and effective vaccines. Here, adenovirus 5 was used as the vaccine vector to construct recombinant adenoviruses expressing CHIKV E2, E1, and E2-6K-E1, respectively. And then the immunogenicity and protective efficiency against CHIKV were evaluated in BALB/c mice. Compared to the ad-wt control group, all three vaccines elicited significant humoral and cellar immune responses. The levels of neutralizing antibodies in the rAd-CHIKV-E2-6K-E1 a

The history of modelling vector-borne infections essentially begins with the papers by Ross on malaria. His models assume that the dynamics of malaria can most simply be characterized by two equations that describe the prevalence of malaria in the human and mosquito hosts. This structure has formed the central core of models for malaria and most other vector-borne diseases for the past century, with additions acknowledging important aetiological details. We partially add to this tradition by describing a malaria model that provides for vital dynamics in the vector and the possibility of super-

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a mosquito-borne RNA virus of the genus Alphavirus that is responsible for a significant disease burden in Central and South America through sporadic outbreaks into human and equid populations. For humans, 2 to 4% of cases are associated with encephalitis, and there is an overall case mortality rate of approximately 1%. In mice, replication of the virus within neurons of the central nervous system (CNS) leads to paralyzing, invariably lethal encephalomyelitis. However, mice infected with certain attenuated mutants of the virus are able to control

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) and vaccines are effective malaria control tools. However, inadequate uptake has been reported in countries where both interventions are available. To maximize the impact these tools provide, it is crucial to identify populations that are not being reached and the barriers to uptake.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted in April 2024 in Kanyamwa Kologi Ward in Homa Bay County, Kenya, 4,662 households in 58 randomely selected villages were visited and interviewed. The proportions of households that (1) received at least one new LLIN wi

BACKGROUND: Cyclone Idai was one of the most destructive cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere. Malaria prevention is not part of cyclone response, but housing damage has been shown to increase malaria risk.
AIM: To assess the extent to which housing damage led to insecticide treated net (ITN) damage, thus compounding malaria risk.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Sussundenga village. This analysis focused on household damage and ITN use in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai. Generalised estimating equations logistic regression models were used to identify factors ass

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid-treated nets have reduced malaria in endemic areas, but insecticide resistance has hindered progress, prompting WHO to recommend piperonyl butoxide (PBO) based long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Kenya adopted PBO nets, but their usage is not well documented. This study aims to assess the uptake and effect of PBO nets versus pyrethroid-only LLINs (pyrethroid-LLINs) on malaria transmission in Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) as one of the main interventions to control malaria spread. The leading driver of this intervention is use of ITN; however, socio-demographic characteristics factors, access and possession of ITN could also influence its usage. Therefore, the present study aimed to document the factors associated with using ITNs to eliminate malaria in Burkina Faso. This study's findings would be useful to the National Malaria Control Programme and other stakeholders engaged in the promotion of ITNs to fight malaria c
