Benzophenones are the most frequent cause of sunscreen allergy. Photoallergic and nonphotoallergic reactions may occur. We present a patient with allergic contact dermatitis of the lips from benzophenone-3 in a lip balm and fragrance/flavorings.

We describe a patient with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (erythema multiforme major) associated with an increase in glipizide dosage administration. Glipizide is a second-generation sulfonylurea commonly used to treat patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Although several reports have documented Stevens-Johnson syndrome caused by first-generation sulfonylureas, our case appears to be the first report of a second-generation sulfonylurea associated with Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hand eczema frequently have a history of atopic dermatitis or atopy. No specific morphologic pattern of hand eczema helps distinguish atopic hand eczema from other etiologies. There are few studies of hand eczema prevalence and morphology in a well-defined population of patients with atopic dermatitis.
METHODS: We evaluated 777 consecutive patients with atopic dermatitis (diagnosed by standard criteria) for hand involvement. An additional 100 patients had further evaluations, including evaluation of the historical and morphologic characteristics of their hand eczema.

Petrolatum rarely causes hypersensitivity reactions. We report a case of a 51-year-old white man with allergic contact dermatitis due to white petrolatum on damaged skin. The patient, who presented with a history of hand dermatitis and intolerance to ointments for years, was patch-tested with white petrolatum on scratched skin. Patch tests with the European Standard series, preservatives, steroids, vehicles, and emulsifiers were also performed. The patch-test reaction to white petrolatum on scratched skin was positive at 48 and 96 hours. All other patch-test results were negative.

Propolis is commonly used in cosmetic and medicinal preparations because of its antiseptic, antiinflammatory, and anesthetic properties. Its therapeutic qualities have been well documented.
