Differentiating irritable mood and disruptive behavior in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Irritability has both mood and behavioral manifestations. These frequently co-occur, and it is unclear to what extent they are dissociable domains. We used confirmatory factor analysis and external validators to investigate the independence of mood and behavioral components of irritability. METHODS: The sample comprised 246 patients (mean age 45 years; 63% female) from four outpatient programs (depression, anxiety, bipolar, and schizophrenia) at a tertiary hospital. A clinical instrument rated by trained clinicians was specifically designed to capture irritable mood and disrupti

Juvenile exposure to methylphenidate and guanfacine in rats: effects on early delay discounting and later cocaine-taking behavior.

RATIONALE: Both methylphenidate (MPH), a catecholamine reuptake blocker, and guanfacine, an alpha2A agonist, are used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Childhood impulsivity, including delay discounting, is associated with increased substance use during adolescence. These effects can be mitigated by juvenile exposure to MPH, but less is known about the long-term effects of developmental exposure to guanfacine in males and females. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine sex differences and dose-dependent effects of juvenile exposure to MPH or guanfacine on delay-discou

Gene-environment interactions and the neurobiology of social conflict.

Recent research has disclosed marked individual differences in biobehavioral responses to social conflicts exhibited by rhesus monkeys across the life span. For example, approximately 5-10% of rhesus monkeys growing up in the wild consistently exhibit impulsive and/or inappropriately aggressive responses to mildly stressful situations throughout development; those same individuals also show chronic deficits in their central serotonin metabolism. These characteristic patterns of biobehavioral response emerge early in life and remain remarkably stable from infancy to adulthood. Laboratory studie

Psychopathology in older adults with severe and profound mental retardation.

The prevalence of psychopathology in younger and older adults with severe and profound mental retardation was examined. Participants were evaluated by direct-care staff using the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped (DASH), which measures the frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms associated with 13 major psychiatric disorders derived from the DSM-III-R. The frequency of disorders was comparable for younger and older adults. Age group differences favoring the older adults were revealed in the analyses of duration and severity on 4 of the DASH subscales. Implications of the

Paternal methylphenidate exposure alters sperm miRNAs and induces intergenerational behavioral and transcriptional changes that are largely reversed by washout.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Methylphenidate (MPH), a first-line medication, is often used long-term and not routinely discontinued in individuals planning to have children. Guided by the Paternal Origins of Health and Disease framework, in this study, we investigated intergenerational effects of paternal MPH exposure and reversibility of sperm epigenetic changes. Male BALB/c mice received MPH (15 mg/kg) or vehicle for 28 days and were mated with untreated females immediately after

Physical complaints and emotional symptoms in the context of series watching: a multicenter latent profile and network analysis in Brazil and Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have examined the physical complaints, emotional aspects, behavioral indicators, and quality of life associated with series watching (PCSW) across cultural contexts. METHODS: This multicenter, cross-sectional study investigated latent profiles of PCSW and their associations with emotional variables, smartphone addiction, food addiction, quality of life, and series-watching intensity (SWI) among university students in Brazil (n = 1,190) and Canada (n = 306). Participants completed five author-developed PCSW self-report items, used as an operational measure rather than

Mediation of Treatment Effects in Problem-Focused Social Skills Training versus Resource Activation for Children with Disruptive Behavior Problems: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

A previous randomized controlled trial comparing problem-focused computer-assisted skills training (ScouT) with supportive resource activation treatment (STARK) in children (6-12 years) with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) demonstrated significant pre-post changes in both treatment conditions, with ScouT being slightly superior on some outcomes. Based on the same sample (N = 99), the present study examined cross-sectional indirect associations between treatment condition and outcomes via intermediate variables, which conceptually correspond to mediation. We hypothesized that ScouT would le

Managing Sleep in Bipolar Disorder: An Overview of Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and are linked to greater symptom severity, higher relapse risk, and increased suicidality. Despite their clinical relevance, sleep problems in BD are frequently underdiagnosed and inadequately treated. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions specifically targeting sleep disturbances in BD. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for studies published until May 2025. Inclusion criteria enc

Personality change after traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Personality change is a debilitating consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet its prevalence, characteristics, and treatment remain poorly understood. METHODS: We completed a pre-registered (CRD42023440990) systematic review and meta-analysis searching four databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE and CINAHL) for primary studies assessing personality change after TBI. We synthesized conceptualization, prevalence, longitudinal outcome, lesion location, and treatment. Prevalence was estimated using a random effect meta-analysis using the Paule-Mandel estimator, with subgroup, me

Replication of the Police and Law Enforcement (PLE) Scale and extension to intersectional race/ethnicity and gender identity groupings.

OBJECTIVE: The Police and Law Enforcement (PLE) Scale assesses police-based discrimination and shows excellent psychometric properties among Black men. We posit that experiences with law enforcement vary at the intersection of race/ethnicity and gender and are linked to psychosocial outcomes. METHOD: Replicate the factor structure of the PLE Scale in an independent sample of Black men (n = 198) and extend the measure by testing its psychometric comparability among Black women (n = 193), Latina women (n = 209), White women (n = 186), Latino men (n = 203), and White men (n = 198). Direct Scaffold-Coupled Electrical Stimulation of Chondrogenic Progenitor Cells through Graphene Foam Bioscaffolds to Control the Mechanical Properties of Graphene Foam-Cell Composites.

Osteoarthritis, a major global cause of pain and disability, is driven by the irreversible degradation of hyaline cartilage in the joints. Cartilage tissue engineering presents a promising therapeutic avenue, but success hinges on replicating the native physiological environment to guide cellular behavior and generate tissue constructs that mimic natural cartilage. Although electrical stimulation has been shown to enhance chondrogenesis and extracellular matrix production in two-dimensional (2D) cultures, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood, particularly in three-d

Delayed modulation of alpha band activity increases response inhibition deficits in adolescents with AD(H)D.

Deficiencies in inhibitory control are one of the hallmarks of attention-deficit-(hyperactivity) disorder (AD(H)D). Response inhibition demands can become increased through additional conflicts, namely when already integrated representations of perception-action associations have to be updated. Yet, the neural mechanisms of how such conflicts worsen response inhibition in AD(H)D are unknown, but, if identified, could help to better understand the complex nature of AD(H)D-associated impulsivity. We investigated both behavioral performance and EEG activity in the theta and alpha band of adolesce

Effect of non-pharmacological treatment on the full recovery of social functioning in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Long-term treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with adverse events, such as nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and sleep disturbances, and poor maintenance of late ADHD medication compromises treatment outcomes and prolongs the recovery of patients' social functioning. AIM: To evaluate the effect of non-pharmacological treatment on the full recovery of social functioning in patients with ADHD. METHODS: A total of 90 patients diagnosed with ADHD between May 2019 and August 2020 were included in the study and randomly assigned to either the pharma

Stimulus-evoked and resting-state alpha oscillations show a linked dependence on patterned visual experience for development.

Persistent visual impairments after congenital blindness due to dense bilateral cataracts have been attributed to altered visual cortex development within a sensitive period. Occipital alpha (8-14 Hz) oscillations were found to be reduced after congenital cataract reversal, while participants performed visual motion tasks. However, it has been unclear whether reduced alpha oscillations were task-specific, or linked to impaired visual behavior in cataract-reversed individuals. Here, we compared resting-state and stimulus-evoked alpha activity between individuals who had been treated for dense b

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cognitive and Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Parkinson Disease and Dementia With Lewy Bodies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article summarizes the underlying biology and current diagnostic and treatment strategies for the cognitive and neuropsychiatric features of Parkinson disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). RECENT FINDINGS: Cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms have been increasingly recognized in PD and DLB, leading to improved diagnosis and treatment strategies. While PD is most associated with and diagnosed by the presence of motor symptoms, nonmotor symptoms can often be the most debilitating for patients. Neuropsychiatric symptoms are highly prevalent nonmo

Satiety does not alter the ventral striatum's response to immediate reward in bulimia nervosa.

Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) cycle between periods of binge-eating and compensatory behavior and periods of dietary restraint, suggesting extremes of under and overcontrol that may be metabolic-state related. This study examined the influence of hunger and satiety on impulsivity and neural responding during decision-making. Twenty-three women remitted from BN (RBN) and 20 healthy comparison women (CW) performed a delay discounting task after a 16-hr fast and following a standardized meal during functional neuroimaging. A dual-systems approach examined reward valuation (decision trials

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Improves Cognitive Control in Patients With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Randomized Behavioral and Neurophysiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality that may affect over 5% of children and approximately 2.8% of adults worldwide. Pharmacological and behavioral therapies for ADHD exist, but critical symptoms such as dysexecutive deficits remain unaffected. In a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind, crossover mechanistic study, we assessed the cognitive and physiological effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in 40 adult patients with ADHD in order to identify diagnostic (cros
