Blue phototherapy is now generally accepted to be effective in the management of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. The response to phototherapy increases with increasing the skin surface area exposed to fluorescent illumination. We investigate the effects of "Intensive double direction phototherapy" (Double blue light 2 X 30 microW/cm2) in the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia of 42 infants with ABO haemolytic diseases and "idiopathic" jaundice. We have found that serum bilirubin levels in newborn infants may be controlled more effectively with double light treatment and that the number of

The peroxidase-anti-peroxidase immunoenzyme method was applied to red blood cell ghosts for the detection of ABO mixed-red blood cell populations. Red blood cell ghosts produced by acid-glycine lysis eliminated previous problems due to distorted red blood cell and hemoglobin-associated peroxidase activity. Anti-A,B was used to discriminate between various mixtures of test cells in group O cells. The positive-stained minor population of test cells stained dark brown following application of the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase method and the nonreactive group O cells were counterstained light blue wi

A rare occurrence of severe, direct hyperbilirubinemia in an infant with BO incompatibility was noted at four hours of age. Severe fetal hemolysis and markedly elevated indirect bilirubin levels might have caused induction of conjugating enzymes during fetal life in this case. Intrahepatic cholestasis was responsible for persistent conjugated hyperbilirubinemia after birth. This responded favorably to cholestyramine therapy.

Bilateral herniorrhaphy was successfully performed on a group AB hemophiliac with cirrhosis of the liver. Adequate hemostasis was maintained with infusions of commercial factor VIII concentrates and fresh frozen plasma. An anti-A antibody mediated hemolytic reaction occurred in the postoperative period. Hemolysis subsided after the cessation of commercial factor VIII infusions. The risk of such hemolytic reactions could be eliminated through the use of group-specific cryoprecipitated factor VIII.

Immune complexes (IC) are constantly formed at low levels in normal individuals. In humans, the red blood cell (RBC) complement receptor 1 (CR1) plays the dominant role in the IC binding and clearance. Over the last several years, we have investigated the potential utility of immunocamouflaged (methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) [mPEG] grafted) RBC to attenuate the risk of alloimmunization. Because the grafted polymer nonspecifically camouflages membrane proteins, its effects on CR1 detection and IC binding were assessed. The dose dependent (0-2.5 mM) effects of activated mPEG (CmPEG, 5 kDa; and BTC

BACKGROUND: Mononuclear phagocytes play a central role in hemolytic transfusion reactions by erythrophagocytosis and production of inflammatory mediators. Factors that affect the number or function of monocyters would be expected to alter the clinical course of hemolytic transfusion reactions, and thus the production of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), a recently described chemotactic and activating cytokine specific for monocytes, was investigated in two distinct settings of red cell (RBC) incompatibility.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Fresh heparinized whole blood was incubated with

A case of generalized amniotic fluid embolism, confirmed by staining fetal isoantigen in the maternal tissues, is reported. The distribution of emboli may be more accurately evaluated with the immunochemical staining technic than with standard hematoxylin and eosin stain. The severity of the embolic state is evaluated very exactly.

BACKGROUND: First described in the early 19th century as “simple pneumothorax,” primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) refers to the presence of air within the pleural cavity without an identifiable secondary cause. PSP predominantly affects males, smokers, tall individuals, and those with a low body mass index. However, the occurrence of PSP in individuals without classical risk factors suggests that additional biological or genetic mechanisms may contribute to disease susceptibility. ABO and Rh blood group antigens are genetically determined traits that have been associated with susceptibili

BACKGROUND: The ABO and Rh blood group systems have been associated with various systemic and ocular diseases. The choroid, as the most vascularized ocular structure, plays a critical role in retinal health. The choroidal vascularity index (CVI) has emerged as arobust metric for evaluating choroidal structure. This study aimed to investigate the association between ABO and Rh blood groups and choroidal structural parameters, including CVI, in a healthy adult population.
METHODS: This prospective study included 164 healthy participants who underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examination, in

Four groups of Lohanas, belonging to the Gujarati, Sindhi and Punjabi were studied for various genetic markers. Lohanas have higher B than A and low Rh(D) negative (1.65-4.64%). The Hp1 gene ranges from 0.1557 to 0.2639; Gm1 is lower (0.34-0.55) than in other populations in Southern India. G-6-PD deficiency was prevalent in 3-8%. All the four groups have a high incidence of the thalassaemia trait and possess Hb-D. Hb, J, and L were also observed in two groups. Data was analysed for intergroup differences.

BACKGROUND: Modern fertilization techniques can lead to unexpected ABO phenotypes in newborn infants and can raise questions as to maternity, paternity, and infant misidentification. Ovum transplantation can result in an infant with an ABO phenotype that is unexpected, given the birth mother's ABO type.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A group AB, Rh-positive female infant was born to a group O, Rh-positive woman as a result of ovum transplantation. The case report is provided.
RESULTS: The birth mother typed group O, Rh-positive both before and after delivery. The infant typed group AB, Rh-positiv

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is associated with coagulopathy and increased mortality. The ABO blood group system has been implicated in modulating susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease severity, but its relationship with viral RNAemia, spike gene mutations, and thrombosis remains underexplored.
METHODS: We analyzed 446 hospitalized COVID-19 patients between 2021 and 2022. SARS-CoV-2 RNAemia was assessed via RT-qPCR on whole blood, and spike gene mutations were identified through whole-genome sequencing in RNAemia-positive samples. ABO blood groups were determined by agglutination testing
