Application of multiplex polymerase chain reaction for rapid identification of Campylobacter jejuni and C coli associated with reproductive failure.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to distinguish Campylobacter jejuni from C coli as causes of reproductive failure. PROCEDURE: Review of clinical cases of reproductive failure attributed to C jejuni or C coli. RESULTS: A case of swine abortion was attributable to infection with C coli. The porcine abortion isolates were verified as C coli by restriction fragment length polymorphism and multiplex PCR. Cases of endometritis in a fox and in mink caused by C jejuni were reviewed, and isolates were confirmed as C jejuni by results of the multiplex PCR. CONCLUSIO

A multi-screening Fast qPCR approach to the identification of abortive agents in ruminants.

Abortion in ruminants represents an important economic concern for farmers. Microbial agents, such as Brucella spp., Chlamydia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Leptospira spp., Neospora caninum, Salmonella spp. and Toxoplasma gondii, are among the main infectious causes of abortion and require rapid and reliable diagnosis. This study describes the development of a multi-screening assay using Fast Real-Time PCR (Fast qPCR) that allows, in a single test, the simultaneous identification of the above-mentioned abortive agents. This multi-screening approach is characterized by a mean diagnostic sensitivity

Surgical Management of Foetal Maceration in a Domestic Shorthair Queen.

Foetal maceration is a pregnancy pathology occasionally observed in cats following intrauterine foetal death, characterised by septic decomposition of foetal tissues, resulting in the exposure of foetal bones. This report describes the clinical management of foetal maceration in a cat and scrutinizes the findings with relevant literature to inform practice. A domestic shorthair queen, over 1 year of age and in its third parity, was presented with prolonged gestation, abdominal distension, fetid vaginal discharge, anorexia and general weakness, accompanied by a history of abortion during its fi

Acute kidney injury in Latin America: a view on renal replacement therapy resources.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) has increasingly been recognized as an important public health issue due to its rising frequency, its associations with early and late adverse outcomes and its economic burden. METHODS: Given the importance of determining the available resources to address this serious issue, the AKI Committee of SLANH conducted a survey to obtain information about infrastructure, human resources and equipment devoted to the treatment of AKI in Latin America RESULTS: A total of 246 units from 14 countries participated in the survey, the majority of them pertaining to nep

Acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis in the tropics.

The morbidity and mortality from acute kidney injury (AKI) have remained relatively high over the last six decades. The triad of infections, nephrotoxins and obstetric complications are still major causes of acute kidney injury in the tropics. This retrospective study is a five-year audit of acute renal failure (ARF) (or stage 3 AKI) in patients requiring hemodialysis at the renal unit of the Department of Medicine of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Nigeria. A total of 80 patients with AKI were treated over a five-year period at our center, of

Personal accounts of 'near-miss' maternal mortalities in Kampala, Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the socio-economic determinants of maternal mortality in Uganda through interviews with women who had 'near-misses'. DESIGN: Observational study using qualitative research methods. SETTING: The postnatal and gynaecology wards of a large government hospital in Kampala, Uganda. SAMPLE: Thirty women who had narrowly avoided maternal deaths with diagnoses of obstructed labour (7), severe pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (3), post caesarean infection (6), haemorrhage (5), ectopic pregnancy (5) and septic abortion (4). METHODS: The semi-structured interviews were conducted in the lo

[Maternal mortality. Hospital Profesor Alejandro Posadas, Buenos Aires. Evolution 2003-2015].

We reviewed the medical records of women with maternal death reported from August 2003 to December 2015 in the Posadas Hospital (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), and calculated indexes, trends and years of potential life lost. A total of 52 cases fulfilled the criteria of maternal death. The information provided by death certificates was meager. Two deaths were incidental: one occurred post-caesarean section and was caused by fat embolism following liquid silicone breast injection, and the other was the consequence of femicide which involved also the 24-week fetus. Of the remaining 50 cases,

Survival from Clostridium toxic shock syndrome: Case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Clostridial toxic shock is a rare syndrome traditionally described in case studies and reviews as a uniformly fatal condition associated with post-partum and post-abortion. Clostridium sordellii was first mentioned in scientific literature as a human pathogen in 1922 when Argentinian microbiologist Alfredo Sordellii identified the organism in gangrenous wounds. Over the past century, there has been infrequent discussion and little awareness surrounding this serious condition. Information about patients who survived C. sordellii toxic shock is essentially nonexistent. PRESENTATIO
