A differential role for the posterior cerebellum in the adaptive control of convergence eye movements.

INTRODUCTION: The vergence oculomotor system possesses two robust adaptive mechanisms; a fast "dynamic" and a slow "tonic" system that are both vital for single, clear and comfortable binocular vision. The neural substrates underlying these vergence adaptive mechanisms in humans is unclear. METHODS: We investigated the role of the posterior cerebellum in convergence adaptation using inhibitory continuous theta-burst repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (cTBS) within a double-blind, sham controlled design while eye movements were recorded at 250hz via infrared oculography. RESULTS: In

A New Interpretation of the Crocodile Forelimb Morphological Features as Adaptation to Parasagittal Quadrupedal Locomotion on the Ground.

We describe the crocodile forelimb features that distinguish them from other reptiles. Reduction of the clavicle and a change in the coracoid shape seem to be another way of maintaining the efficient step length, while the antebrachium and manus transformations create peculiar oblique manus position on the ground to promote the forelimb parasagittalization.

Intestinal adaptation in short bowel syndrome. What is new?

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a well-known cause of intestinal failure (IF) (1). SBS occurs after extensive resection of the small bowel (RSB) resulting in a bowel length of less than 150/200 cm. The colon may have been partially or completely removed. SBS patients experience severe water and nutrient malabsorption, so that they are often managed with parenteral nutrition (PN) to supplement their oral intake (2-4). A complete understanding of the pathophysiology of SBS and postoperative adaptations may allow identifying the spontaneous processes that compensate for the reduction in absorptive

[Condylar adaptation triggered by SGTB orthopedic therapy-Biological mechanism and clinical significance].

Endochondral ossification constitutes biological and phenotypic foundation for condylar growth. Adaptive response of condylar cartilage to mandibular advancement, on the other hand, facilities condylar remodeling generated by SGTB (sagittal-guided twin block)orthopedic therapy. This enables SGTB to correct increased overjet and overbite by eliminating jaws discrepancy. It is also an encouraging advance that SGTB therapy is used to intervene temporo-mandibular joint disorders (TMD) by regenerating the degraded condylar cartilage.

Evaluating local adaptation of a complex phenotype: reciprocal tests of pigmy rattlesnake venoms on treefrog prey.

Theory predicts that predator-prey interactions can generate reciprocal selection pressures on species pairs, which can result in local adaptation, yet the presence and pattern of local adaptation is poorly studied in vertebrate predator-prey systems. Here, we used a reciprocal common garden (laboratory) experimental design involving comparisons between local and foreign populations to determine if local adaptation was present between a generalist predator-the pigmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius)-and a co-occurring prey-the squirrel treefrog (Hyla squirella). We conducted toxicity trials us

UV Radiation and Visible Light Induce hsp70 Gene Expression in the Antarctic Psychrophilic Ciliate Euplotes focardii.

The psychrophilic ciliate Euplotes focardii inhabits the shallow marine coastal sediments of Antarctica, where, over millions of years of evolution, it has reached a strict molecular adaptation to such a constant-temperature environment (about -2 °C). This long evolution at sub-zero temperatures has made E. focardii unable to respond to heat stress with the activation of its heat shock protein (hsp) 70 genes. These genes can, however, be expressed in response to other stresses, like the oxidative one, thus indicating that the molecular adaptation has exclusively altered the heat stress signali

Susceptibility to a metal under global warming is shaped by thermal adaptation along a latitudinal gradient.

Global warming and contamination represent two major threats to biodiversity that have the potential to interact synergistically. There is the potential for gradual local thermal adaptation and dispersal to higher latitudes to mitigate the susceptibility of organisms to contaminants and global warming at high latitudes. Here, we applied a space-for-time substitution approach to study the thermal dependence of the susceptibility of Ischnura elegans damselfly larvae to zinc in a common garden warming experiment (20 and 24 °C) with replicated populations from three latitudes spanning >1500 km in

Selection and adaptation of Saccharomyces cerevisae to increased ethanol tolerance and production.

A total of 24 yeast strains were tested for their capacity to produce ethanol, and of these, 8 were characterized by the best ethanol yields (73.11-8 1.78%). The most active mutant Saccharomyce s cerevisiae ER-A, resistant to ethanol stress, was characterized by high resistance to acidic (pH 1.0 and 2.0), oxidative (1 and 2% of H2O2), and high temperature (45 and 52 degrees C) stresses. During cultivation under all stress conditions, the mutants showed a considerably increased viability ranging widely from about 1.04 to 3.94-fold in comparison with the parent strain S. cerevisiae ER. At an ini

Lipoxins, the novel mediators of gastroprotection and gastric adaptation to ulcerogenic action of aspirin.

Previous studies revealed that prostaglandins contribute to the mechanism of maintenance of gastrointestinal integrity and mediate various physiological aspects of mucosal defense. The suppression of prostaglandin synthesis in the stomach is a critical event in terms of the development of mucosal injury after administration of various NSAID including aspirin (ASA). A worldwide use of ASA is now accepted due to its remarkable analgesic, antipyretic and anti-thrombotic prophylactics against myocardial infarct and coronary disorders despite the fact that the use of NSAIDs is associated with the r

Hypoxia sensing in cryptococcus neoformans: biofilm-like adaptation for dormancy?

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus neoformans is an obligate aerobic pathogenic yeast causing lung infection typically followed by spread to the central nervous system. During pathogenesis, it relies on well-established virulence factors. This review focuses on the emerging role of cryptococcal adaptation to hypoxia in pathogenesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the MedLine database for information on the cryptococcal hypoxia response. While several recent papers describe components of two presumable hypoxia-sensing pathways including description of their target genes, a link of this system to the h

A comparative view on mechanisms and functions of skeletal remodelling in teleost fish, with special emphasis on osteoclasts and their function.

Resorption and remodelling of skeletal tissues is required for development and growth, mechanical adaptation, repair, and mineral homeostasis of the vertebrate skeleton. Here we review for the first time the current knowledge about resorption and remodelling of the skeleton in teleost fish, the largest and most diverse group of extant vertebrates. Teleost species are increasingly used in aquaculture and as models in biomedical skeletal research. Thus, detailed knowledge is required to establish the differences and similarities between mammalian and teleost skeletal remodelling, and between dis

Adaptation of the hindlimbs for climbing in bears.

The hindlimbs of the Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), the polar bear (Ursus maritimus), the brown bear (Ursus arctos) and the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) have been anatomically and osteometrically studied. The Musculus tibialis cranialis of the Malayan sun bear and the giant panda possessed a well-developed rich fleshy portion until the distal end of the tibia. In the polar bear and the brown bear, however, the fleshy portion of the M. tibialis cranialis was not developed until the distal end of the tibia. The tendon of the M. tibialis cranialis inserting on the proximal end of

Stressed or stressed out: what is the difference?

The term "allostasis" has been coined to clarify ambiguities associated with the word "stress". Allostasis refers to the adaptive processes that maintain homeostasis through the production of mediators such as adrenalin, cortisol and other chemical messengers. These mediators of the stress response promote adaptation in the aftermath of acute stress, but they also contribute to allostatic overload, the wear and tear on the body and brain that result from being "stressed out". This conceptual framework has created a need to know how to improve the efficiency of the adaptive response to stressor

Biodegradation of high-concentration isopropanol by a solvent-tolerant thermophile, Bacillus pallidus.

The aerobic biodegradation of high-concentration, to 24 g l(-1), 2-propanol (IPA) by a thermophilic isolate ST3, identified as Bacillus pallidus, was successfully carried out for the first time. This solvent-tolerant B. pallidus utilized IPA as the sole carbon source within a minimal salts medium. Cultivation was carried out in 100-ml shake flasks at 60 degrees C and compared with cultivation within a 1-l stirred tank reactor (STR). Specific growth rate (micro) was about 0.2 h(-1) for both systems, with a maximum cell density of 2.4 x 10(8) cells ml(-1) obtained with STR cultivation. During ex

Histopathology of the skin of UV-B irradiated sole (Solea solea) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) larvae.

Larval stages of two economically important flatfish, the sole (Solea solea) and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) were exposed to ambient and elevated levels of UV-B. Sole larvae, which naturally occur in the plankton in early spring, demonstrated skin lesions at elevated levels of UV-B. Histopathology of the sole revealed cellular changes in the integument, characteristic of sunburn damage, with a reduction in the size of mucus-secreting cells and an increased epidermal thickening, especially at the highest doses of UV-B (2.15 KJ bio eff/m2). Pigmentation in the sole is restricted to a few isola

[Sensitivity and adaptation of various Brucella species to acid shock].

The sensitivity to acid shock (pH 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, and 3.3) and the capacity to adaptive acid tolerance response (ATR) is studied in the reference Brucella strains differing by the origin, biological, and virulent properties. The ability of Brucella to survive under conditions of acid pH depended on the medium composition, growth phase, and preliminary adaptation at pH 5.6. B. suis biovar 1 and B. melitensis biovar 3 were more resistant to low pH than other Brucella species. Adaptation by overnight growth at pH 5.6 (stationary phase) induced ATR to the acid shock (pH 3.3-3.0) in all Brucella spe

The cerebellum and the adaptive coordination of movement.

Based on a review of cerebellar anatomy, neural discharge in relation to behavior, and focal ablation syndromes, we propose a model of cerebellar function that we believe is both comprehensive as to the available information (at these levels) and unique in several respects. The unique features are the inclusion of new information on (a) cerebellar output--its replicative representation of body maps in each of the deep nuclei, each coding a different type and context of movement, and each appearing to control movement of multiple body parts more than of single body parts; and (b) the newly asse

Physiological changes during spaceflight.

Before human beings first explored space, many dire predictions from the scientific community suggested that weightlessness was not compatible with life. Although these prophesies have been proven false, many physiological alterations do occur in microgravity conditions. Other systems are altered as well, but the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and immune systems undergo adaptations that may pose problems for the space traveler, especially on returning to gravity.
