Experiences of Informal Caregivers Caring for Individuals With Chronic Schizophrenia in Asia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: In Asia, many caregivers are culturally obliged to assume the role of taking care of individuals experiencing chronic schizophrenia, even as they grapple with stigma and compassion fatigue. Despite the significance of this phenomenon, the collective experiences of Asian caregivers remain poorly understood. AIM: To synthesise qualitative evidence on the experiences of informal caregivers when caring for individuals with chronic schizophrenia in Asia. METHODS: A search was conducted on seven databases for studies published between 2013 and 2023. The included studies were appraise

Sociocultural Implications in the Development of Early Maladaptive Schemas in Adolescents Belonging to Sexual and Gender Minorities.

Culture is a central theme across various theories and disciplines, influencing behavior and self-perception through interactions within social groups, families, and legal systems. This influence extends to the general population and particularly impacts sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), resulting in minority stress that contributes to mental health issues and the development of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs). Adolescents within these groups face typical developmental stressors-such as hormonal changes and societal pressures-compounded by prejudice, increasing their vulnerability to depre

The relationship of stress coping styles on substance use, depressive symptoms, and personality traits of nurses in higher education institution.

AIM: This study examined the collective characteristics of nurses and their stress coping style. METHODS: We conducted a cluster analysis of the stress coping strategies of 841 nurses belonging to Dokkyo Medical University Hospital, as measured by the Brief COPE (Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced). We also conducted multivariate analyses of each cluster's sociodemographic characteristics, personality traits, depressive symptoms, work attitudes, sense of fairness, and turnover intention. RESULTS: The results of cluster analysis using the standardized z scores of the Brief COPE demons

Posttraumatic growth after perinatal loss: A systematic review.

Perinatal loss is a potentially painful event for parents and a grief that is often not recognised socially. Research has widely shown that grief responses can coexist with posttraumatic growth responses. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the available evidence of studies investigating posttraumatic growth in people who have suffered a perinatal loss. A search was conducted in PROQUEST and Web of Science for articles published from 2011 to 2021. After reviewing 10 selected articles, it was found that the participants showed moderate levels of posttraumatic growth, mostly in the d

Coping, social support and medical factors on psychosocial impact in couples experiencing infertility.

This study assessed dyadically the relationship between psychosocial impact of infertility experienced by 87 couples and individual coping strategies, perceived social support and some medical factors. Although problem-focused strategies emerged as positive, certain side effects on partner were revealed. Social support was related to psychosocial outcomes in a positive way, cognitive component of coping strategies resulted as a prominent factor on individual's adjustment as well as the partner's role. Findings suggest the convenience of promoting the awareness about the effects of each partner

Posttraumatic growth in people affected by an occupational accident: A longitudinal multilevel model of change.

This study analyzed a predictive model of posttraumatic growth (PTG) in a cohort of 244 workers affected by an occupational accident. A longitudinal design with three points in time (i.e., 1, 6, and 12 months after the accident) was used. PTG, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), subjective severity of the event, deliberate rumination, and seeking social support were evaluated. In addition, time since the accident, age, and gender were included as predictors in our model. Deliberate rumination and seeking social support significantly predicted PTG trajectory in a multilevel model. Practical c

Forgiveness and wellbeing after spinal cord injury: Perceived stress and adaptation to disability as mediators.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-altering acquired disability. Understanding factors that contribute to adaption to disability and decreased SCI-related stress are critical to personal wellbeing and quality of life for SCI patients. Previous research suggests that forgiveness of others, self-forgiveness, and overall forgiveness are associated with psychological well-being in patients with other chronic illnesses. As such, dimensions of forgiveness may be relevant factors in restoring wellness in SCI patients. This study sought to examine a comprehensive model of the impact

Illness Perceptions, Coping, Health-Related Quality of Life and Psychological Outcomes in Cervical Dystonia.

This study examined the predictive ability of the Common-Sense Model to explain psychological outcomes in cervical dystonia, a movement disorder that affects the muscles of the head and neck. Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised, brief COPE, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Cervical Dystonia Impact Profile and the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory were completed by 118 people with cervical dystonia. Correlations and hierarchical multiple regression models were conducted. Illness perceptions and coping strategies explained 59% of variance in anxiety, 61% of variance in depression and h

Emotional processing writing and physiological stress responses: understanding constructive and unconstructive processes.

Writing about emotions related to a life stressor is thought to promote coping via emotional processing. However, all styles of emotional processing may not be beneficial to managing stress. Such styles can include constructive (planning/problem-solving, meaning-making) and unconstructive (rumination, worry) forms. This study utilised a randomised experimental design to examine the physiological impact (as indexed by heart rate variability, salivary cortisol reactivity and recovery) of expressive writing with guidance to promote constructive and discourage unconstructive styles (EP+) versus ex

Psychological Impacts and Ways of Coping Reported by Spousal Caregivers of Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Recipients: A Qualitative Analysis.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a demanding treatment with well-established medical and psychosocial sequelae. Impacts on significant others are tremendous. Using an unfiltered qualitative approach, we asked spouses (n = 15) of HCT recipients to talk about their thoughts and feelings regarding the transplantation and their role as caregiver. Recordings were transcribed and independently coded to identify recurrent patterns. Caregivers mentioned both negative and positive psychological impacts of HCT, but the number of negative impacts was greater: 164 versus 34 instances

Perceived injustice in chronic pain: an examination through the lens of predictive processing.

Chronic pain conditions have been shown to be exacerbated by psychological factors, and a better understanding of these factors can inform clinical practice and improve the efficacy of interventions. The current paper investigates perceived injustice, a novel psychosocial construct, within a framework influenced by the tenets of predictive processing. The proposed conceptual model derived from tenets of predictive processing yields a single hierarchical self-reconfiguring system driven by prediction, which accounts for a wide range of human experiences such as perception, behavior, learning an

Passive adaptation to stress in adulthood after short-term social instability stress during adolescence in mice.

This study reports that short-term social instability stress (SIS) in adolescence increases passive-coping in adulthood in male mice. Short-term SIS decreased the latency of immobility and increased the frequency and time of immobility in tail suspension test. These findings support the hypothesis that adolescent stress can induce a passive adaptation to stress in adulthood, even if it is a short period of stress.

Attitudes toward stress and coping among primary caregivers of patients undergoing hemodialysis: A Q-methodology study.

Introduction Hemodialysis (HD) causes many life changes, not only for patients undergoing it but also for their families by allowing them to rely on this lifesaving equipment unless they receive a kidney transplant. The stress of the primary caregivers, who spends the most time in the family taking care of the patient undergoing HD, is quite high. This study was to identify attitudes about stress and coping among primary caregivers of HD patients. Methods Q-methodology was undertaken because it integrates quantitative and qualitative research methods. A convenience sample of 33 primary caregiv

The importance of being ironic: narrative openness and personal resilience in later life.

This essay applies a narrative perspective to the topic of resilience. On various fronts (physical, social, biographical), aging itself, it argues, pushes us past a perception of aging as intrinsically tragic and toward a more ironic stance instead, one marked by increased acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. Moreover, intentional engagement in narrative reflection-by means of integrative reminiscence, life review, and the like-fosters such a stance directly by facilitating narrative openness and, with it, "a good strong story" for coping with the challenges of later life.

Depression, demoralisation or adjustment disorder? Understanding emotional distress in the severely medically ill.

As emotional distress is often seen as an understandable reaction to a severe or life-threatening illness, clinicians are reluctant to make a diagnosis of depression and resort to alternative diagnoses such as adjustment disorder (AD) or demoralisation. This paper introduces these concepts and critically examines their clinical utility. It concludes that neither AD nor demoralisation can be clearly distinguished from depression on variables such as clinical symptoms, outcome or treatment response. Since AD and demoralisation are considered transient or understandable reactions, the risk of usi

[Disability in schizophrenia. Intrinsic factors and prediction of psychosocial outcome. An analysis of literature].

OBJECTIVE: Many different factors, both related to the individual and illness ("intrinsic" factors) and to the environment ("extrinsic" factors), contribute in different ways to the development of disability. Basing on data of literature, this review focuses the main "intrinsic" factors predicting disability in schizophrenia. METHOD: A systematic search on Mediline of all papers published during the period 1965-2001 was performed, using "schizophrenia", "outcome", "psychosocial outcome", "social disability" and "social adjustment" as key words. Only papers reporting specifically data about pr
