Anxiety and Depression Symptoms Improve in Partial Hospitalization Treatment for Adolescents with and without Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors: Leveraging Measurement-Based Care and Electronic Health Record Data.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) offer an alternative to inpatient care for youth with acute psychiatric needs. PHP treatment is effective for adults, but fewer studies have examined adolescent programs. In the current study, we describe a large sample of adolescents enrolled in a PHP and evaluate symptom change over treatment. Demographic information, insurance, treatment length, readmission status (i.e., repeat admissions), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) were extracted from electro

The incidence and causes of acute hospitalizations and emergency room visits in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a single-centre experience.

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood. Because acute glycaemic com-plications account for most concerns in the management of T1DM in children, special attention during the challenging time of the global COVID-19 pandemic is required to prevent deteriorations resulting in acute hospitalization. AIM OF THE STUDY: is to assess how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the incidence and causes of acute hospitalizations and emergency room visits in adolescents with established type 1 diabetes mellitus, and to characterize the admitted popu

Does age play a role in fever and neutropenia events and complications: A comparison of adolescents versus younger children with cancer at a tertiary care pediatric hospital, a pilot project.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYA) are a complex group of patients. The development of fever and neutropenia (FN) is a potentially lethal complication of chemotherapy. Risk stratification of patients with FN has become increasingly valuable allowing for early intervention and to guide treatment type and duration appropriately. There are risk stratification guidelines that exist, but most are validated in young children with cancer (YCWC). AYA are frequently shown to have more numerous and severe side effects from chemotherapy. AIMS: This study aimed to identify whether

Gender-Specific Significance of Peer Abuse during Childhood and Adolescence on Physical and Mental Health in Adulthood-Results from a Cross-Sectional Study in a Sample of Hospital Patients.

Peer abuse (PA) is a widespread and gender-sensitive form of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). However, research on its influence on physical and mental health in adulthood remains scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate gender-specific associations between PA and physical and mental health in adulthood in a sample of general hospital patients. A cross-sectional study at the University Hospital of Innsbruck was conducted. Data on ACEs, physical and mental health were collected using self-report questionnaires. We compared patients with no ACEs, PA only, ACEs without PA, and ACEs w

Hospitalization of Adolescents Aged 12-17 Years with Laboratory-Confirmed COVID-19 - COVID-NET, 14 States, March 1, 2020-April 24, 2021.

Most COVID-19-associated hospitalizations occur in older adults, but severe disease that requires hospitalization occurs in all age groups, including adolescents aged 12-17 years (1). On May 10, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the Emergency Use Authorization for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to include persons aged 12-15 years, and CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended it for this age group on May 12, 2021.* Before that time, COVID-19 vaccines had been available only to persons aged ≥16 years. Understanding and describing the epidemiology of COVID-19

Risk factors associated with increasing prevalence of gonorrhea and the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Neisseria gonorrhoeae among adolescents: A decade-long, hospital-based study from India.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea is a significant cause of morbidity among sexually active population. Young adults and adolescents have a high risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to behavioral, biological, and cultural factors fuelling the epidemic among them. The Centers for Disease Control recommends annual STI screening for sexually active individuals under twenty-five and those at higher risk. The present study aims at determining the risk factors linked to the rising prevalence of gonorrhea among Indian adolescents and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Neisseria go

Risk of non-fatal self-harm and premature mortality in the three years following hospitalization in adolescents and young adults with an eating disorder: A nationwide population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (ED) are associated with high rates of suicide attempts and premature mortality. However, data in large samples of adolescents and young adults are limited. This study aims to assess the risk of self-harm and premature mortality in young people hospitalized with an ED. METHODS: Individuals aged 12 to 25 years old hospitalized in 2013-2014 in France with anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa as a primary or associated diagnosis were identified from French national health records. They were compared to two control groups with no mental disorders, and with any ot

Longitudinal Relations Between Childhood Maltreatment, Emotion Regulation Difficulties, and Suicidal Ideation and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: An 18-Month Investigation of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents.

Within the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology, extant research shows that exposure to threat-including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse-is linked to psychopathology among adolescents; problems with emotion regulation may, at least in part, explain this association. Both theoretical and empirical work also suggests that emotion regulation difficulties-particularly access to emotion regulation strategies-may mediate the relation between threat and self-injurious thoughts and behavior, though no studies to date have explicitly tested this model. The current study tested relat

Association between short-term air pollution exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-related hospital admissions among adolescents: A nationwide time-series study.

Long-term air pollution exposure has been suggested to increase the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the association between short-term air pollution exposure and ADHD-related outcomes is still unknown. We investigated the associations between short-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM10), nitrogen oxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hospital admissions with a principal diagnosis of ADHD among adolescents (age 10-19 years) in 16 regions of the Republic of Korea from 2013 to 2015. We estimated the region-specific rela

Estimating national prevalence of life-limiting conditions amongst infants, children, and adolescents using administrative hospital data in the absence of a unique health identifier; evidence from Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the total number of children with a life-limiting, complex chronic condition or serious illness has been identified as an important first step in determining how many children might need palliative care in a country or region. Relevant estimates have not been calculated for Ireland, an exercise complicated by the country's lack of a fully operational unique patient identifier in healthcare data. METHODS: This study estimated prevalence of life-limiting conditions amongst children aged 0-19 in Ireland in 2019 and 2024, demonstrating methods in the absence of a unique ide

Concordance between parent-reported and documented COVID-19 vaccination status among hospitalized children and adolescents: Implications for vaccine effectiveness estimates, May 2021-October 2023.

BACKGROUND: During the U.S. COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE), healthcare providers were required to report all administered COVID-19 vaccines in Immunization Information Systems (IIS), a key data source for vaccine effectiveness (VE) evaluations. Expiration of the PHE and commercialization of COVID-19 vaccines raised concerns about IIS data completeness. Parental report is an alternative source of vaccination data but might be inaccurate. METHODS: Using VE surveillance network data during May 2021-October 2023, we compared parent-reported and documented COVID-19 vaccine doses for patien

A never-ending story: The COVID-19 pandemic and the increase of hospital admissions for typical and atypical anorexia nervosa in children, adolescents and young adults in the post-pandemic era in Germany.

BACKGROUND: A large increase in the rate of hospitalizations for adolescents and children with anorexia nervosa (AN) was observed during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. It is still not clear whether this was a temporary effect or whether the increased admission rates persist. METHODS: Data were retrieved from the largest health insurance in Germany comprising 2.5 million children between 9 and 19 y. All patients of this age group with a discharge diagnosis of typical (AN) and atypical AN (AAN) according to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), wer

Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization among adolescent and pediatric SARS-CoV-2 cases between May 2021 and January 2022 in Ontario, Canada: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have been shown to reduce risk of infection as well as severe disease among those with breakthrough infection in adults. The latter effect is particularly important as immune evasion by Omicron variants appears to have made vaccines less effective at preventing infection. Therefore, we aimed to quantify the protection conferred by mRNA vaccination against hospitalization due to SARS-CoV-2 in adolescent and pediatric populations. METHODS: We retrospectively created a cohort of reported SARS-CoV-2 case records from Ontario's Public Health Case and Contact

Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial investigating two different refeeding formulations to improve safety and efficacy of hospital management of adolescent and young adults admitted with anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Providing effective nutritional rehabilitation to patients hospitalised with anorexia nervosa (AN) is challenging, partly due to conservative recommendations that advocate feeding patients at low energy intakes. An 'underfeeding syndrome' can develop when patients are not provided with adequate nutrition during treatment, whereby malnourished patients fail to restore weight in a timely matter, and even lose weight. Of particular concern, the reintroduction of carbohydrate in a starved patient can increase the risk of developing electrolyte, metabolic and organ dysfunction. The pr
