Caffeine Consumption and Adolescent Mental Health: The Role of Sleep and Brain Structure.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is a widely consumed psychoactive substance, with use beginning during adolescence, a sensitive period of neurodevelopment. Despite its widespread, unregulated use, links between caffeine consumption and adolescent brain structure and mental health remain poorly understood. METHODS: We examined the association between caffeine intake and brain structure in 9632 adolescents aged 9-11 years. Caffeine consumption (intake of coffee, tea and soft drinks) and mental health were assessed via self-report. Cortical thickness and surface area were derived from structural MRI scans.

Health Insurance Literacy and Financial Toxicity in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors.

PURPOSE: Empirical evidence examining the impact of health insurance literacy (HIL) on cancer-related financial toxicity (FT) among adolescent and young adults (AYAs) is limited. AYA cancer survivors experience greater levels of financial hardship due to sociodemographic and developmentally related factors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between HIL and FT in this vulnerable population. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional design to survey 246 AYA cancer survivors (diagnosed between ages 15-39) through the Kentucky Cancer Registry (KCR). Survey data were collected on

The Social Ecology of Psychotherapy: Community-Level Influences on Adolescent Mental Health Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Effective treatment for depression and anxiety in adolescence is a public health concern. Although psychotherapies for depression and anxiety exist, youth psychotherapies are less effective when delivered in community settings compared to research settings. A social-ecological model, which considers individual-, interpersonal-, and community-level influences on wellbeing, posits that understanding multi-level factors can help us understand this drop in treatment effectiveness. This study employs a socioecological model to examine the influence of neighborhood factors on depression a

Familial confounding and causal inference in child and adolescent neurodevelopment and mental health.

Recent announcements by the US Government linking paracetamol use during pregnancy to autism in offspring highlight the risks of misinterpreting observational research to inform policy; this is a clear example of the principle that association does not equal causation. Unmeasured familial confounding is a common bias in epidemiological studies, whereby shared genetic or environmental factors within families produce spurious associations between risk factors and outcomes. In this Viewpoint, aimed at clinicians from a range of disciplines working with children and young people with neurodevelopm

Community-minded, adolescent-driven: addressing behavioral health disparities through youth participatory research designs.

Ongoing intergenerational trauma, racial injustice, technological advancements, and the COVID-19 pandemic contribute to increased mental health risks and a persistent unmet need for youth evidence-based behavioral health services. While research and intervention implementation continue to progress, it is rare to see efforts that intentionally include adolescent perspectives to bring evidence-based programming to communities. Youth-centered approaches such as Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) offer researchers and systems leaders an orientation to learn through the youth voices most im

Bridging Gaps in Adolescent and Adult Sexual Health: Training Medical Students as Educators.

BACKGROUND: The absence of a nationally standardized sexual health curriculum leads to inconsistent adolescent education on contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other critical topics, leaving healthcare professionals the responsibility to fill this gap. Medical training also lacks standardized curricula in sexual health counseling; therefore many medical trainees report hesitancy in sexual health communication. This study evaluated the efficacy of a structured Sexual Health Educator Training Program in improving medical students' confidence in sexual health communication,
