The nineteenth century was the site of radical changes in understanding mental illness. The professionalization of psychiatry consisted primarily of the discipline's aspiration to the status of an expert medical subspecialty. While all forms of insanity were eventually reframed in medical terms, melancholia--for moral and nosological reasons--assumed a special role that made it an ideal diagnosis for conceptual reframing. Our analysis of the journal literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in North America and Germany traces several ways in which melancholia was medicalized.

HIV disease often leads to neuropsychiatric disturbance, either through direct infection of the brain by the virus or through CNS disease secondary to immunodeficiency. Neuropsychiatric complications of AIDS and AIDS-related disorders may present clinically as acute or chronic organic mental syndromes, or may mimic functional psychiatric illness, in particular depression, anxiety, or psychotic states. Two cases of hypomanic states in homosexual men suffering from AIDS are reported. Neither of the two men had a personal or family history of affective disorder. In one man, hypomanic symptoms wer

Pregnancy in women with severe mental illness is associated with adverse outcomes for mother and infant. There are limited data on prevalence and predictors of relapse in pregnancy. A historical cohort study using anonymised comprehensive electronic health records from secondary mental health care linked with national maternity data was carried out. Women with a history of serious mental illness who were pregnant (2007-2011), and in remission at the start of pregnancy, were studied; severe relapse was defined as admission to acute care or self-harm. Predictors of relapse were analysed using ra

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is associated, after controlling for other adversities, with a range of non-psychotic disorders in adult life. There is a need to clarify whether CSA contributes to risk of disorder in the absence of such adversities, and given that associations may be accounted for by genetic mechanisms, whether they are seen where the perpetrator of CSA is not a biological relative, and where there has been only one incident.
METHODS: A questionnaire-based study of a socio-economically representative sample of women age 25-36 (N = 862) was carried out. Parental care and

After childbirth, from about a quarter up to nearly one half of all puerperae develop a short-lasting, mild affective distress, the so called blues. During the first months after delivery, about 10-15% of all young mothers suffer from a longstanding depression which is so severe that they are in need of treatment. In one or two out of 1000 women even a psychotic disorder becomes manifest. These postpartal disturbances and diseases are often not diagnosed by doctors-on the one hand because the women concerned often hide their complaints due to shame and a sense guilt regarding their supposed fa

INTRODUCTION: Energy drinks (EDs) is an umbrella term for a family of beverages which contain high dosages of caffeine. ED consumption is increasing worldwide, and it is possible that excess ED consumption can cause or worsen symptoms of severe mental disorders (SMD) such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder.
METHODS: We searched three electronic databases for studies on patients with SMD who had experienced psychotic symptoms following the consumption of energy drinks, as well as patients who developed psychotic symptoms after ED consumption without any prior severe psychiatric di

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the risk of lifetime and current methamphetamine-induced psychosis in patients with methamphetamine dependence. The association between psychiatric co-morbidity and methamphetamine-induced psychosis was also studied.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted concurrently at a teaching hospital and a drug rehabilitation center in Malaysia. Patients with the diagnosis of methamphetamine based on DSM-IV were interviewed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) for methamphetamine-induced psychosis and oth

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is mainly characterized by an individual's intense concern about other people's opinion of the individual. Notably, among those with severe anxious symptoms, we can often observe self-referential feelings.
OBJECTIVE: Faced with little research directed toward the exploration of psychotic symptoms in SAD patients, we will approach the topic by describing three cases.
DISCUSSION: Three explanations seem possible for the psychotic manifestations in SAD. The first one depends on the individual's ability or inability to challenge the impression of being c

BACKGROUND: The association between childhood adversity and psychosis in adulthood is well established. However, genetic factors might confound or moderate this association.
AIMS: Using a catchment-based case-control sample, we explored the main effects of, and interplay between, childhood adversity and family psychiatric history on the onset of psychosis.
METHOD: Childhood adversity (parental separation and death, physical and sexual abuse) was assessed retrospectively in 224 individuals with a first presentation of psychosis and 256 community controls from South London, UK. Occurrence of p

Hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP) is characterized by progressive spasticity and weakness of the legs with or without additional abnormalities. Reports of psychiatric disorders in patients with HSP are limited to mood disturbances rather than to psychosis. We had noted significant psychotic illness in several patients recruited to a survey of HSP in Ireland and therefore set about examining the frequency and nature of psychosis in our patients with HSP. Cases with HSP and psychotic illness were identified from a nationwide epidemiological and clinical study. Psychiatric case notes were revi

BACKGROUND: Dementia is generally characterized by cognitive impairment that can be accompanied by psychotic symptoms; for example, visual hallucinations are a core feature of dementia with Lewy bodies, and delusions are often seen in Alzheimer's disease. However, for behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), studies on the broad spectrum of psychotic symptoms are still lacking. The aim of this study was to systematically and prospectively subtype the wide spectrum of psychotic symptoms in probable and definite bvFTD.
METHODS: In this study, a commonly used and validated clinical

Human body core temperature is tightly regulated within approximately 37 °C. Global near surface temperature has increased by over 1.2 °C between 1850 and 2020. In light of the challenge this poses to human thermoregulation, the present perspective article sought to provide an overview on the effects of varying ambient and body temperature on cognitive, affective, and behavioural domains of functioning. To this end, an overview of observational and experimental studies in healthy individuals and individuals with mental disorders was provided. Within body core temperature at approximately 37 °C

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity of alcohol abuse and dependence with bipolar disorders is high. The aim of this short commentary is to review a current study investigating the impact of depressive symptoms and craving on alcohol use in individuals with co-occurring bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence.
METHODS: The strengths of Prisciandaro and colleagues' (2012) study are reviewed. The research group collected data as part of an 8-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of acamprosate treatment in comorbid individuals.
RESULTS: The importance of the study lies in highlighting th

This review considers the possible familial relationship of schizotypal and paranoid personality disorders (SPD, PPD) to schizophrenia (SCZ) and affective disorders (AD). There have been few controlled studies on familial risk of SPD and PPD based on direct semi-structured interviews of relatives, blind to proband diagnosis. Three of six studies reported increased familial risk of SPD for SCZ probands, but with considerable variability in estimates of this risk. None of four studies reported a significant relationship between AD and familial SPD. There is substantial but less consistent eviden

The author attempted to determine whether the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) would be sensitive to a symptom pattern unique to lithium-responsive patients regardless of diagnosis. Statistical analyses of the MMPI scores of lithium responders, lithium nonresponders, and a group of patients receiving other psychotropic drugs revealed that the depression, psychasthenia, mania, and social introversion scale scores significantly differentiated the lithium response and lithium nonresponse groups. No strong indications of significant difference were found between the MMPI scale sc

CONTEXT Affective disorders are common in women, with many episodes having an onset in pregnancy or during the postpartum period. OBJECTIVE To investigate the occurrence and timing of perinatal mood episodes in women with bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, and recurrent major depression (RMD). SETTING AND PATIENTS Women were recruited in our ongoing research on the genetic and nongenetic determinants of major affective disorders. Participants were interviewed and case notes were reviewed. Best-estimate diagnoses were made according to DSM-IV criteria. The 1785 parous women identified inc

OBJECTIVES: In contrast to studies of adult bipolar I disorder (BP-I), there is a paucity of data on psychotic phenomena in child BP-I. Therefore, the aim of this work was to describe delusions and hallucinations in pediatric BP-I.
METHODS: Subjects were 257 participants, aged 6-16, in either of two large, ongoing, NIMH-funded studies, 'Phenomenology and Course of Pediatric Bipolar Disorders' or 'Treatment of Early Age Mania (TEAM)'. All subjects had current DSM-IV BP-I (manic or mixed phase) with a Children's Global Assessment Scale score <or=60 (definite clinical impairment), and all had ca

OBJECTIVE: To estimate risks of fracture at any site, and at sites linked with osteoporosis, in mentally ill adults compared with the general population.
METHOD: We created a community-based cohort by using the U.K. General Practice Research Database, with follow-up from January 1987 through April 2005. We investigated age- and sex-specific fracture risks in psychotic illness(N = 4283), nonpsychotic affective disorder (N = 95,228), and any other psychiatric condition (N = 49,439). Comparison cases were subjects with no psychiatric code (N = 182,851); age-stratified (18-44 years, 45-74 years,
