Median nerve conduction has been compared in CTS, with or without diabetes, and diabetic polyneuropathy. Approximately 90% of hands were correctly predicted as CTS or diabetic polyneuropathy by a comparison including the median antidromic sensory nerve conduction velocities in the elbow-to-wrist segment, wrist-to-palm segment, palm-to-finger segment, and the amplitude of the sensory nerve action potential. CTS with diabetes could not be distinguished from CTS without diabetes. The association between proximal and distal nerve conduction velocities was similar in CTS and diabetic polyneuropathy

The aim of the present study was to identify in the rat the overall input-output pattern of connections of the primary auditory field, with special attention to the topographical organization of the geniculocortical auditory projection. By using cytoarchitectural criteria, three temporal cortical fields were distinguished in the rat: Te1, Te2, and Te3. The primary auditory field Te1 is characterized by a relatively specific differentiation of its layers when compared with other temporal fields. The afferent and efferent connections of Te1 were identified by using the retrograde and anterograde

The sensation of pain derived from intracranial and extracranial blood vessels is conveyed to the central nervous system chiefly by the trigeminal nerve, with first order neurones terminating in the nucleus caudalis of the spinal trigeminal tract and an area lateral to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord at the second cervical segment. The evoked discharge of second order neurons can be suppressed by activation of the endogenous pain control system or, in about one third of cases, by the local application of ergot derivatives or the serotonin (5HT1) agonist sumatriptan (GR43175). Stimulation of

The anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase was utilized to identify the motor nuclei and sensory connections of the IXth and Xth cranial nerves in the clearnose skate, Raja eglanteria. The majority of VIIth, IXth, and Xth nerve motoneurons form an ipsilateral dorsal visceromotor column, extending from the level of the posterior lateral line nerve root to the 3rd-4th ventral spinal roots. Within this column, the motor nucleus of IX (IXm) occurs rostral to vagal motoneurons (dorsal motor nucleus of X, Xmd). Vagal motoneurons are also located ventrolaterally in a ventral m

Attempts were made to determine the afferent and efferent connections of the medial (MVN), inferior (IVN) and lateral (LVN) vestibular nuclei (VN) in the cat and monkey using retrograde and anterograde axoplasmic transport technics. Injections of HRP and [3H]amino acids were made selectively into MVN, IVN and LVN and into: (1) MVN and IVN, (2) LVN and IVN and (3) all 4 VN. Contralateral afferents to MVN arise from (1) the nuclei prepositus (NPP) and intercalatus (NIC), (2) all parts of MVN and cell group 'y' and (3) parts of the superior vestibular nucleus (SVN), IVN and the fastigial nucleus

Homeostatic maintenance is essential for pulp function. Disrupting pulp homeostasis may lead to pulp degeneration, such as fibrosis and calcifications. Sensory nerves constitute a crucial component of the dental pulp. However, the precise involvement of sensory nerves in pulp homeostasis remains uncertain. In this study, we observed the short-term and long-term histological changes in the dental pulp after inferior alveolar nerve transection. Additionally, we cultured primary dental pulp cells (DPCs) from the innervated and denervated groups and compared indicators of cellular senescence and c

The lateral parafacial region (pFL ; which encompasses the parafacial respiratory group, pFRG) is a conditional oscillator that drives active expiration during periods of high respiratory demand, and increases ventilation through the recruitment of expiratory muscles. The pFL activity is highly modulated, and systematic analysis of its afferent projections is required to understand its connectivity and modulatory control. We combined a viral retrograde tracing approach to map direct brainstem projections to the putative location of pFL , with RNAScope and immunofluorescence to identify the neu

Endometriosis, an estrogen-dependent chronic inflammatory disease, is the most common cause of chronic pelvic pain. Here, we investigated the effects of linaclotide, a Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for IBS-C, in a rat model of endometriosis. Eight weeks after endometrium transplantation into the intestinal mesentery, rats developed endometrial lesions as well as vaginal hyperalgesia to distension and decreased mechanical hind paw withdrawal thresholds. Daily oral administration of linaclotide, a peripherally restricted guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist peptide acting locally

To supply a fuller morphological characterization of the vagal afferents innervating the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), specifically to label vagal terminals in the tissues forming the LES in the gastroesophageal junction, the present experiment employed injections of dextran biotin into the nodose ganglia of rats. Four types of vagal afferents innervated the LES. Clasp and sling muscle fibers were directly and prominently innervated by intramuscular arrays (IMAs). Individual IMA terminals subtended about 16° of arc of the esophageal circumference, and, collectively, the terminal fields wer

BACKGROUND: In most individuals, injury results in activation of peripheral nociceptors (pain-sensing neurons of the peripheral nervous system) and amplification of central nervous system (CNS) pain pathways that serve as a disincentive to continue harmful behaviour; however, this may not be the case in some developmental disorders that cause intellectual disability (ID). Moreover, individuals affected by ID disorders may initiate self-injurious behaviour to address irritating or painful sensations. In normal individuals, a negative feedback loop decreases sensation of pain, which involves des

In addition to using glutamate as a neurotransmitter at central synapses, many primary sensory neurons release glutamate from peripheral terminals. Primary sensory neurons with cell bodies in dorsal root or trigeminal ganglia produce glutaminase, the synthetic enzyme for glutamate, and transport the enzyme in mitochondria to peripheral terminals. Vesicular glutamate transporters fill neurotransmitter vesicles with glutamate and they are shipped to peripheral terminals. Intense noxious stimuli or tissue damage causes glutamate to be released from peripheral afferent nerve terminals and augmente

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution of dichotomizing afferents supplying both the prostate and urinary bladder, and to discern the effects of noxious stimulation of the prostate on urinary bladder function in rats.
METHODS: Dual retrograde fluorescence labeling was used to investigate the neurogenic aspect of urinary bladder function. The dual distribution of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) cells was determined by propidium iodide (PI) and propidium bisbenzimide (Bb) staining into the prostate and bladder. To examine mechanical sensitivity of the bladder, conscious filling cystometry was pe

Odorant receptors (ORs) have been shown to be present not only in the chemosensory cilia of the olfactory sensory neurons, but also in their axon terminals. This observation has emphasized the notion that the receptor protein may contribute to the precise receptor-specific targeting of olfactory axons in the olfactory bulb. This concept implies a particularly important role for the axonal receptor protein during the onset and early phase of the wiring process during development. In the present study, we have demonstrated, by means of specific antibodies, that, as early as mouse embryonic day E

BACKGROUND: Consciousness poses two main problems. The first is understanding the conditions that determine to what extent a system has conscious experience. For instance, why is our consciousness generated by certain parts of our brain, such as the thalamocortical system, and not by other parts, such as the cerebellum? And why are we conscious during wakefulness and much less so during dreamless sleep? The second problem is understanding the conditions that determine what kind of consciousness a system has. For example, why do specific parts of the brain contribute specific qualities to our c

Patterning of the antennal lobe of adult Drosophila occurs through a complex interaction between sensory neurons, glia, and central neurons of larval and adult origin. Neurons from the olfactory sense organs are organized into distinct fascicles lined by glial cells. The glia originate from one of the three types of sensory lineages-specified by the proneural gene atonal. Gain-of-function as well as loss-of-function analysis validates a role for cells of the Atonal lineage in the ordered fasciculation of sensory neurons. Upon entry of the antennal nerve to central regions, sensory neurons at f

As part of a research program on the evolution of somatosensory systems in vertebrates, the various components of ascending spinal projections were studied with in vivo and in vitro tract-tracing techniques in representative species of amphibians (the large green frog, Rana perezi, the clawed toad, Xenopus laevis and the ribbed newt, Pleurodeles waltl). Three main ascending sensory channels, each with largely separate targets, were demonstrated: 1. Ascending projections via the dorsal funiculus include primary and nonprimary projections that ascend to terminate mainly in the dorsal column nucl

Ipsilateral evoked potentials in the caudal trigeminal nucleus, ventrobasal thalamus, and cortex during electrical stimulation of the injured and opposite intact nerves were studied in rats with trigeminal neuropathy caused by partial compression of the infraorbital nerve. In spite of abnormally increased long latent evoked activity in the caudal nucleus ipsilaterally to compression, amplitude asymmetry of the ipsilateral thalamic and cortical evoked potentials in rats with pain syndrome was shown to be absent during nerve stimulation of the snout sides. In rats without pain-evoked potentials

The possible afferent fibers that participate in the inhibition of jaw-opening reflex (JOR) were examined using selective conduction blockade by topically applied capsaicin. Blood pressure, heart rate, and rectal temperature were monitored, and bilateral femoral nerves were denervated in thiamylal anesthetized Wistar rats. The sciatic nerves were exposed bilaterally and two cotton balls, one soaked with 1.5% capsaicin and the other with saline, were directly applied to the nerve trunk on the respective sides. We verified the conduction blockade of the compound action potentials A delta and C f

Mossy fiber projections from the brainstem to the nodulus were studied by means of the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the cat. The findings indicate exclusive secondary vestibular projections to the nodulus (96.5% of the total number of labeled cells in cat 1). Major sources of such projections include the caudal half of the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei, and the dorsal half of the superior vestibular nucleus. Groups-x and -z of the vestibular nuclei give rise to minor projections. The projections from groups-f and -y, and the interstitial nucleus of the eighth
