Detrimental effects of malnutrition on the damage induced by alcoholism: a study of animal models that simulate chronic alcoholism and malnutrition of large human groups.

The specific influence of malnutrition on the pathophysiological changes induced by chronic alcoholism is controversial; most studies are inconclusive because they have been made in chronic alcoholics that develop malnutrition as a complication of alcoholism. However, in vast human groups, alcoholism evolves in individuals that belong to a chronically undernourished population. In an attempt to simulate real-life conditions of malnutrition-alcoholism in humans, we studied in rats: (1) the effects of chronic malnutrition with tortilla, a corn bread that constitutes the main diet of large human …

Neurophysiological, Neuroimaging, and Neuropsychological Predictors of Human Alcoholism and Risk.

Over the last several decades, both brain electrophysiological measurements, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) and event-related potentials/oscillations (ERPs/EROs), and neuroimaging measures have immensely contributed to our understanding of neural mechanisms underlying various psychiatric disorders, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). This Special Issue was launched to invite research and review articles that explore the utility of these neural measures to determine the effects of alcohol use (e.g., regular drinking, social drinking, binge/heavy drinking, and chronic drinking) on brain st

Cytological transformation of the cervix in immunodeficiency aggravated by alcoholism.

UNLABELLED: Comorbid pathology, high mortality and disability remain an urgent problem for people with the development of an immunodeficiency state, including women of reproductive age. Prognostic triggers could help to improve management of preneoplastic injury of cervical epithelium. AIM: The aim of this study was to identify the cytological features of the cervical epithelium in women with immunodeficiency status and alcoholism, depending on the level of CD4-lymphocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved cytological analysis of women, who were divided into 3 groups (group consiste…

Towards Standardizing the Alcoholism Evaluation Of Potential Liver Transplant Recipients.

AIMS: For teams around the world, alcoholic liver disease patients comprise the largest, and clinically most controversial, group applying for liver transplant. And yet evaluation decisions for them remain highly variable by locale. METHODS: Targeting standardized assessment, we provide guidelines on what information the transplant team should seek, from what sources, and how best to make use of it. This report focuses on 'what to do and how to do it' in providing appropriate assessments for this complex patient group. RESULTS: Proper evaluation includes (a) taking the clinical history from

Contributions to Understanding the Neuropsychology of Alcoholism: An INS Legacy.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been a major cause of family, social, and personal strife for centuries, with current prevalence estimates of 14% for 12-month and 29% lifetime AUD. Neuropsychological testing of selective cognitive, sensory, and motor functions complemented with in vivo brain imaging has enabled tracking the consequences of AUD, which follows a dynamic course of development, maintenance, and recovery or relapse. Controlled studies of alcoholism reviewed herein provide evidence for disruption of selective functions involving executive, visuospatial, mnemonic, emotional, and atten…

Parental separation, parental alcoholism, and timing of first sexual intercourse.

PURPOSE: We examined timing of first voluntary sexual intercourse as a joint function of parental separation during childhood and parental history of alcoholism. METHODS: Data were drawn from a birth cohort of female like-sex twins (n = 569 African ancestry [AA]; n = 3,415 European or other ancestry [EA]). Cox proportional hazards regression was conducted predicting age at first sex from dummy variables coding for parental separation and parental alcoholism. Propensity score analysis was also employed to compare intact and separated families, stratified by predicted probability of separation.…

Eyeblink Classical Conditioning in Alcoholism and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Alcoholism is a debilitating disorder that can take a significant toll on health and professional and personal relationships. Excessive alcohol consumption can have a serious impact on both drinkers and developing fetuses, leading to long-term learning impairments. Decades of research in laboratory animals and humans have demonstrated the value of eyeblink classical conditioning (EBC) as a well-characterized model system to study the neural mechanisms underlying associative learning. Behavioral EBC studies in adults with alcohol use disorders and in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorde…

Alcoholism and liver disease in Mexico: genetic and environmental factors.

Alcoholism and cirrhosis, which are two of the most serious health problems worldwide, have a broad spectrum of clinical outcomes. Both diseases are influenced by genetic susceptibility and cultural traits that differ globally but are specific for each population. In contrast to other regions around the world, Mexicans present the highest drinking score and a high mortality rate for alcoholic liver disease with an intermediate category level of per capita alcohol consumption. Mexico has a unique history of alcohol consumption that is linked to profound anthropological and social aspects. The M…

Novel medication targets for the treatment of alcoholism: preclinical studies.

Alcoholism is a complex heterogeneous disease and a number of neurotransmitter and neuromodulator systems have been implicated in its manifestation. Consequently, it is unlikely that existing medications such as disulfiram (Antabuse®), naltrexone (ReVia®), acamprosate (Campral®)) can be efficacious in every individual. Thus, the development of novel therapeutic agents with greater selectivity and less unwanted effects for the treatment of this disease is one of the major objectives of alcohol research. This review summarizes the findings of five novel compounds with different neuronal targets …

Beyond alcoholism: Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome in patients with psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Wernicke encephalopathy and Korsakoff syndrome (the combined disorder is named Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome [WKS]) are preventable, life-threatening neuropsychiatric syndromes resulting from thiamine deficiency. WKS has historically been associated with alcoholism; more recently, it has been recognized in patients who have anorexia nervosa or have undergone bariatric surgery for obesity. However, patients with nutritional deficiencies of any origin are at risk for WKS. We present clinical histories and neuroimaging data on 2 young adults with underlying psychiatric disorders who beca…

Alcoholism and intimate partner violence: effects on children's psychosocial adjustment.

It is widely recognized that alcoholism and relationship violence often have serious consequences for adults; however, children living with alcoholic parents are susceptible to the deleterious familial environments these caregivers frequently create. Given the prevalence of IPV among patients entering substance abuse treatment, coupled with the negative familial consequences associated with these types of behavior, this review explores what have been, to this point, two divergent lines of research: (a) the effects of parental alcoholism on children, and (b) the effects of children's exposure t…

Drugs for relapse prevention of alcoholism: ten years of progress.

Multiple neurochemical pathways are involved in mediating craving and relapse to alcohol. Opioidergic and glutamatergic systems have a key role in alcoholism, as demonstrated by the clinically effective compounds naltrexone and acamprosate acting through these systems. The dopaminergic system has long featured in alcoholism research; hitherto disappointing results from clinical studies could improve following the discovery that dopamine D3 receptor antagonism produces consistent and robust results in preclinical studies. Corticotropin-releasing factor signalling and the endocannabinoid system …

Risk and protective factors for suicide in patients with alcoholism.

Alcoholism is associated with a high risk for suicidal behavior. Up to 40% of persons with alcoholism attempt suicide at some time and 7% end their lives by committing suicide. Risk factors include being male, older than 50 years of age, living alone, being unemployed, poor social support, interpersonal losses, continued drinking, consumption of a greater amount of alcohol when drinking, a recent alcohol binge, previous alcohol treatment, a family history of alcoholism, a history of comorbid substance abuse (especially cocaine), a major depressive episode, serious medical illness, suicidal com…

A 4-year longitudinal study on risk factors for alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies are needed to resolve inconsistencies in previous findings regarding antecedents of alcoholism. OBJECTIVE: To investigate genetic and environmental risk factors for alcoholism. DESIGN: A 4-year longitudinal cohort study. SETTING: General community. PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort was randomly selected from 4 aboriginal groups in Taiwan. Cohort subjects free from any alcohol use disorder at phase 1 (n=499) were reassessed approximately 4 years later (phase 2). The percentage of participants who completed the study was 98.4%. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A…

The role of natural recovery in alcoholism and pathological gambling.

While most pathological gamblers, like most alcohol abusers, recover on their own, it seems likely that they are at greater risk for relapse than those who have been through successful treatment. Accordingly, a substantial increase in treatment resources for pathological gamblers, along with greater efforts to establish the effectiveness of these treatments, ought to receive national priority. If the data on alcohol-abusing self-changers are generalizable to self-changing pathological gamblers, the prognosis for gamblers who stop gambling all together is better than for those who aspire to con
