A Biodegradable, Self-Gelling Protease-Grafted Alginate Dressing for Efficient Control of Non-Compressible Hemorrhage.

Uncontrollable noncompressible bleeding has always been a major cause of death and disability among civilians and military personnel. Herein, a biodegradable, self-gelling protease-grafted alginate dressing was developed for efficient noncompressible bleeding control. The hemostatic dressing was fabricated through a high-degree sodium ion exchange of calcium alginate fibers, followed by covalent grafting of trypsin via carbodiimide chemistry. This design confers exceptional swelling capacity and rapid gelation within seconds upon blood contact, forming a physical barrier. The grafted trypsin e

Exploring alginate/zinc oxide-based 3D-printed structures for application as customizable wound dressings.

Chronic wounds represent a significant global healthcare burden due to the limited effectiveness of current therapeutic strategies. To address this critical need, we developed 3D-printed regenerative wound dressings that can be customized with antimicrobial drugs tailored to individual patient requirements. A novel semisolid extrusion ink combining the biocompatibility and printing properties of alginate (Alg) with the regenerative properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) was produced. Two types of dressings were successfully printed by varying the concentrations of ZnO

Polydopamine/sodium alginate hydrogels with photothermal effects: a drug carrier for NIR-controlled drug release.

As a smart drug carrier, photosensitive hydrogels enable controlled drug release. Here, using polydopamine (PDA) as a photothermal agent additive, a smart PDA/SA hydrogel was constructed by ionic crosslinking of sodium alginate (SA). The PDA/SA hydrogels displayed an ideal capacity for sustained ibuprofen (IBU) release. In vitro release experiments showed that the release of IBU from PDA/SA hydrogels was affected by NIR light. The amount of IBU released from the PDA/SA hydrogel after NIR irradiation was higher than that from the SA hydrogel without NIR irradiation. The PDA/SA hydrogel effectiv

Oral chitosan/alginate nanoparticles for enhanced bioavailability, intestinal retention, and sustained analgesic efficacy of NANT.

Snake venom proteins have attracted considerable attention as oral analgesics owing to their definite analgesic effects and lack of tolerance or addiction. Herein, we report the successful development of an optimized oral analgesic nanoparticle formulation (CS/ALG@NANT NPs), prepared by the self-assembly of chitosan/alginate andNaja atraneurotoxin (NANT) via polyelectrolyte complexation and optimized using a systematic Box-Behnken design. The resulting nanoparticles exhibited uniform spherical morphology, an appropriate particle size (278 nm), high encapsulation efficiency (>90%), and substant

A programmed oxidized alginate/chitosan sandwich-layered dressing for sequential regulation of diabetic wound healing.

Chronic diabetic wounds remain a major clinical challenge due to persistent inflammation, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), and impaired angiogenesis. However, many wound dressings do not coordinate therapeutic delivery with the changing oxidative and angiogenic requirements of diabetic wound healing. Herein, we developed a sandwich-structured composite dressing (DFOPLGA@CGel) that enables spatiotemporally coordinated drug delivery to match the stage-specific demands of wound healing. The outer hydrogel layer, formed via dynamic Schiff-base crosslinking between oxidized sodium alginate

An Alginate Hydrogel-Based Novel Oral Contrast Agent Designed for Gastric Computed Tomography Imaging.

In gastric computed tomography (CT), oral contrast agents can enhance the image quality, thereby improving the diagnostic sensitivity and effectiveness for the early detection of gastrointestinal diseases. However, current oral contrast agents are mostly liquid and suffer from rapid gastric emptying rates and short retention times, resulting in unsatisfactory CT results. Here, we present a contrast agent that enables calcium carbonate and sodium alginate to undergo a gelation reaction in the acidic environment of the stomach, facilitating the in situ formation of an iohexol-incorporated calciu

An alginate-based biomimetic nanozyme metabolic immunomodulator for sensitizing photothermal-immunotherapy in postoperative breast cancer.

The postoperative therapy for breast cancer is significantly restricted by local immunosuppression and the non-healing of infected wounds. We developed a botanical/nanozyme/polysaccharide metabolic immunomodulator (BCZG), using alginate as the primary scaffold, integrating baicalein-loaded carbon nanozyme into a polydopamine-modified alginate hydrogel. In the acidic tumor microenvironment, the BCZG mimicked NOX, OXD, and GSHOx activities, which could deplete NADH/ATP and glutathione to block heat shock protein synthesis and amplify ROS storms for achieving robust immunogenic cell death. Meanwh

Development of an oxidized alginate/decellularized retinal matrix composite scaffold for retinal tissue engineering applications.

The retinal extracellular matrix (rECM) offers architectural support, adhesion sites, and signaling cues that regulate retinal development and viability. However, rECM's poor mechanical properties and rapid degradation rate hinder its application for scaffold fabrication, especially during handling their counterpart hydrogel and transplantation procedures. To address these issues, this study introduces oxidized alginate (OA) to develop and optimize a scaffold composed of rECM and OA. To achieve this, alginate was partially oxidized with an oxidation degree of 5 % and the resulting oxidized alg

Application of fulvic acid-modified alginate in improving the utilization efficiency of secondary and trace element fertilizers.

This study synthesized a ternary polymer material composed of alginic acid, acrylic acid, and fulvic acid (AAF). Catalytic polymerization yielded a material that effectively binds calcium ions. AAF can bind up to 8.7 times its mass in calcium ions and has multifunctional agricultural applications. Experimental results showed that the optimal mass ratio of alginic acid, acrylic acid, and fulvic acid was 3:2:0.6. When the reaction was carried out at 60 °C for 6 h, the prepared material, containing a large number of carboxyl, hydroxyl, and other groups, exhibits extremely strong binding ability t

Multiple regeneration of "high iron" alginate composite gel beads for rapid treatment of dye wastewater.

Water pollution, particularly from dye contaminants, has become a critical global issue, driving the demand for efficient treatment technologies such as persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes. In our study, we developed a novel chitosan-modified calcium alginate gel as a scaffold for heterogeneous Fenton catalysis. Through grafting ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid onto the amino groups within the gel backbone and subsequent loading of Fe2+, we developed CASGMC, a "high iron" alginate gel capable of efficiently absorbing and releasing Fe2+. Additionally, 3D RGO@Cu2S-MoS2 was incorporated
