Alternately N-alkylated aromatic amides such as 1-3 bearing various side chains were designed and synthesized as novel helical foldamers. The CD spectra of oligomers with chiral side chains showed a positive Cotton effect, which indicates that these oligomers take helical conformations in solution. The CD intensity gradually increased with increasing chain length, and pentamer 3d showed remarkably strong CD signals in chloroform. The absorption maxima of the UV spectra were increasingly red shifted with increasing chain length, in contrast to the case of poly( p- N-alkylbenzamide)s. Structure

Chiral-diamine catalyzed addition of ZnMe2 to PhC(O)CF2X (in dichloromethane at -30 °C) affords fluorinated alkyl tertiary alcohols in high yield (quantitative for X = H, F, Cl; 84% for X = CF3) and up to 99% ee. These conditions are similarly very efficient for other various ArC(O)CF3 molecules. A fine analysis of the results can be performed based on a double-cycle mechanism.

Therapeutic peptides and diagnostic agents with their molecular size below the renal clearance threshold suffer from short blood circulation time. Here, we report a novel design of peptide-based ligand with a strong binding affinity to human serum albumin (HSA), which can be used as a tag to extend the blood circulation of small-size molecules. We designed ligands with dual alkyl groups connected with a negatively charged spacer. The ligands showed both higher binding affinity to HSA and a higher retention in mice blood than that of a single alkylated peptide.

The potent and selective inhibitor of β-glucosidases, noeurostegine, was evaluated as an inhibitor of glucocerebrosidase (GCase) to give an IC(50) value of 0.4 μM, being 250- and 150-fold better than N-butyl and N-nonyl noeurostegine, respectively. The parent noeurostegine and its N-butyl and N-nonyl alkylated congeners were also tested as pharmacological chaperones against a N370S GCase mutant. Of these, only noeurostegine, was found to increase enzyme activity, which in potency was comparable to that previously reported for isofagomine.

Trioxaquine PA1259 is an efficient drug on larval- and adult-stage schistosomes, able to alkylate heme inside worms treated with it, leading to the formation of covalent heme-drug adducts. Such a mechanism, similar to one reported for other trioxaquines in Plasmodium, indicates that heme may be a common target of these trioxane-based drugs in different blood-feeding parasites.

The molecular structure of sodium ethylmercury thiosalicylate (also known as thimerosal and Merthiolate) and related arylthiolate mercury alkyl compounds, namely PhSHgMe and PhSHgEt, have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies indicate that the appearance of the (199)Hg mercury satellites of the ethyl group of thimerosal is highly dependent on the magnetic field and the viscosity of the solvent as a consequence of relaxation due to chemical shift anisotropy.

In this work, we examine the dependence of the fluorescence quantum yield of water-soluble CdSe/ZnS quantum dots on the local environment. The hydrophobicity of the local environment was modified by using different alkyl chain lengths in a set of oligo-ethylene glycols. Our results show that the quantum yield of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots is highest for the longest alkyl chain length, suggesting that a more hydrophobic environment is beneficial for generating bright, water-soluble quantum dots.

The effect of sodium alkyl sulfates (C6-C14) on the loss of protein from the everted rat small intestine was measured.
