Four male Pomeranians that showed alopecia with an age of onset between five months and eight years were investigated. The aim of the investigation was to clarify whether the affected dogs had alopecia X and whether their symptoms might be due to a hereditary defect. The four affected dogs showed hairless patches at the root of the tail, at the back, at the limbs from the thigh to the tarsus and at the abdomen. It requires thorough exploration (history of hair loss, treatments and concomitant pathologies), detailed clinical examination of the integument and palpation of the thyroid. PURPOSE: To determine the ocular alterations occurring in alopecia areata with regard to the lens and fundus.
METHODS: Seventy-five patients with alopecia areata were examined. Seventy healthy control patients unaffected by skin, ocular or systemic disorders were also studied.
RESULTS: Symptomless punctate lens opacities were found in 38 (51%) patients, whereas only 2 (3%) control patients had similar lens changes. Fundus alterations were found in 31 (41%) cases of alopecia areata and in only 16 (23%) controls.

Alopecia has been described in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Zidovudine reportedly influences hair growth in these patients, causing regrowth or thickening. A 33-year-old HIV-infected man developed alopecia areata after beginning zidovudine therapy. The alopecia reversed after the drug was discontinued.

The authors indicated examinations of actual immune states in 42 patients with alopecia areata in whom no cause of the disease was stated. Congenital triangular alopecia is manifested at 3 to 5 years of age by unilateral or, less frequently, bilateral patches of alopecia in the frontotemporal region. DESIGN: A retrospective survey of 1) patients enrolled in NIAID Mycoses Study Group (MSG) protocols involving the long-term use of fluconazole for treatment of endemic mycoses and 2) patients treated with fluconazole outside of a protocol setting but by the MSG investigators who were MSG members.
