Childhood maltreatment affects college students' nonsuicidal self-injury: Dual effects via trauma-related guilt, trauma-related shame, and prosocial behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the impact of trauma-related guilt, trauma-related shame and prosocial behaviors on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and college students' NSSI. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined how trauma-related guilt, trauma-related shame, and prosocial behaviors mediate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and college students' NSSI. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 496 college students (40.7 % male participants, age = 18.98 ± 1.35 years) from five universities in China. METHODS: This longitudinal study was conducted thre

Collective action and the evolution of social norm internalization.

Human behavior is strongly affected by culturally transmitted norms and values. Certain norms are internalized (i.e., acting according to a norm becomes an end in itself rather than merely a tool in achieving certain goals or avoiding social sanctions). Humans' capacity to internalize norms likely evolved in our ancestors to simplify solving certain challenges-including social ones. Here we study theoretically the evolutionary origins of the capacity to internalize norms. In our models, individuals can choose to participate in collective actions as well as punish free riders. In making their d

Oxytocin promotes altruistic punishment.

The role of neuromodulators in the enforcement of cooperation is still not well understood. Here, we provide evidence that intranasal applied oxytocin, an important hormone for modulating social behavior, enhances the inclination to sanction free-riders in a social dilemma situation. Contrary to the notion of oxytocin being a pro-social hormone, we found that participants treated with oxytocin exhibited an amplification of self-reported negative social emotions such as anger towards free-riders, ultimately resulting in higher magnitude and frequency of punishment of free-riders compared to pla

Humanitarian Cleft Lip/Palate Surgeries in Buddhist Thailand and Neighboring Countries.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates surgeries done on patients with cleft lip and/or palate in Thailand and its neighboring countries from 1988 to 2008. This 21-year-long volunteer surgical mission was sponsored by Duang-Kaew Foundation, a volunteer organization. Countries involved, besides Thailand, were Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, China, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and India. The same surgical method for primary and secondary repair of lip and/or palate was used throughout: Onizuka method by single surgeon, the second author mainly. DESIGN: We assessed, by way of the patients' medical records incl

Samuel Holden Parsons Lee (1772-1863): American physician, entrepreneur and selfless fighter of the 1798 Yellow Fever epidemic of New London, Connecticut.

Samuel Holden Parsons Lee practised medicine at a time when the germ theory of disease had not yet been proposed and antibiotics remained undiscovered. In 1798 he served selflessly as the only physician in town who was willing to battle the Yellow Fever outbreak of New London, Connecticut. Because he practised at the dawn of the age of patent medicine, unfortunately his name also came to be associated with medical quackery. We argue that his contributions have been grossly underestimated. He compounded and vended medications - including bilious pills and bitters - that were gold standards of t

A model for neurosurgical humanitarian aid based on 12 years of medical trips to South and Central America.

The pediatric neurosurgical mission trips led by physicians at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health Systems began in 1996 with the formation of Medical Outreach to Children, founded by 1 of the authors (J.D.W.) after a visit to Guatemala. Since then, 19 surgical trips to 4 different countries in Central and South America have been coordinated from 1996 to 2008. This humanitarian work serves a number of purposes. First and foremost, it provides children with access to surgical care that they would otherwise not receive, thereby significantly improving their quality of life. Second, the

Humanitarian ventures or 'fistula tourism?': the ethical perils of pelvic surgery in the developing world.

The vesico-vaginal fistula from prolonged obstructed labor has become a rarity in the industrialized West but still continues to afflict millions of women in impoverished Third World countries. As awareness of this problem has grown more widespread, increasing numbers of American and European surgeons are volunteering to go on short-term medical mission trips to perform fistula repair operations in African and Asian countries. Although motivated by genuine humanitarian concerns, such projects may serve to promote 'fistula tourism' rather than significant improvements in the medical infrastruct

Damon or Pandora?

Americans have recently had thrust into their faces multiple media borne medical and social ethics dilemmas ranging from Dr. Kevorkian's euthanizing a patient on national television to payments by managed care providers for experimental medical treatments, to the nationally telecast situation which this paper will attempt to address. The case at hand concerns a minor in need of a repeat (third) kidney transplant who has been offered a kidney by her father. He also provided a kidney for her second kidney transplant some years ago. The teenage girl went into her current kidney failure/organ reje

The emotional foundations of human prosociality.

Humans are fundamentally cooperative beings whose survival and success depend on prosocial behavior, including with non-kin and strangers. Even young children engage in prosocial behaviors such as helping, sharing, and comforting that are often intrinsically motivated. While evolutionary accounts explain why prosociality emerged, they leave open the proximate question of what motivates individuals, including young children, to engage in costly actions that benefit others. This chapter argues that evolution has equipped humans with affective mechanisms that motivate us to initiate, sustain, and

Efficiency Recalibrates Social-Emotional Trade-Offs Behind Partner Choice in Direct Reciprocity through Intention-Specific Neural Bases.

Direct reciprocity, in which beneficiaries return favors to benefactors, is a cornerstone of human cooperation. Previous empirical work addresses partner control-how individuals decide whether and how much to reciprocate-whereas the equally critical dimension of partner choice, deciding whom to reciprocate when aided by multiple benefactors, remains understudied. This gap is addressed by testing two determinants: social-emotional motivations and reciprocal efficiency (the efficiency of reinforcing future relational capital). Combining an interpersonal task with fMRI multivariate neural express

Feasibility of an altruistic sperm donation program in Canada: results from a population-based model.

BACKGROUND: Stringent donor-screening criteria and legislation prohibiting payment for donor gametes have contributed to the radical decline of donor insemination (DI) using sperm provided by Canadian men. Thus, many individuals rely on imported sperm. This paper examines the feasibility of an altruistic sperm donation (ASD) program to meet the needs of Canadians. METHODS: Using Canadian census data, published literature and expert opinions, two population-based, top-down mathematical models were developed to estimate the supply and demand for donor sperm and the feasibility of an ASD program

Gender and living donor kidney transplantation.

Renal transplantation is the first choice of treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. It offers a longer life span, a better quality of life, and lower health care costs as compared to long-term dialysis. In the past years, a constantly rising demand of kidneys on the one hand and a shortage of disposable organs on the other hand pose a growing challenge on transplant medicine. Donor and recipient gender may influence many aspects of kidney transplantation, but the nature of these interactions is still unclear. This article summarizes a part of our present knowledge in the field

Live donor nephrectomy for kidney transplantation.

The number of patients with end-stage renal disease is increasing substantially every year around the world. Renal transplantation is the best treatment option to improve survival and quality of life. Although the numbers of living, related and deceased transplant donors has also increased, this growth is insufficient to keep up with the expansion rate of the renal failure population. The introduction of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy has gained widespread acceptance by physicians and patients, and seems to be better than open donor nephrectomy in terms of reduced postoperative pain, quick rec

[Bonaparte's expedition in Egypt].

Bonaparte's expedition in Egypt was not only a military operation. It was also a tentative colonial move which was used as a model for over a century as well as a cultural and scientific adventure, quite unique for its time. The evacuation of the Oriental Army stands as a milestone in the history of civilisations because the protocols which marked its achievement - to which Desgenettes and Larrey contributed-displayed outstanding humanitarian and medical dimensions. The humanitarian dimension is highlighted by the remarkable contribution of the British Authorities in taking care of the wounded

More generosity, less inequity aversion? Neural correlates of fairness perception under social distance and of its relation to generosity.

Humans instinctively react negatively to inequity, while generosity counters this tendency. Previous studies show that both fairness perception and generosity involve balancing behaviors and motivations in social interactions. However, their relationship remains underexplored, limiting our understanding of the complex psychological processes underlying social behavior. Using a social discounting task, we assessed individual generosity, while an Ultimatum Game task with concurrent electroencephalogram recording allowed us to quantify inequity aversion and fairness perception by manipulating soc

Highlights from the first-ever violence against children and youth survey conducted exclusively in a humanitarian setting.

BACKGROUND: Violence against children (VAC) has garnered attention as a priority issue, in part, due to the Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS). Although children are disproportionately represented among forcibly displaced people, VACS are a novelty in humanitarian settings. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the approach to the first-ever VACS conducted exclusively in a humanitarian setting (HVACS) in Uganda, in addition to providing an overview of the results of this novel survey, along with their implications. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants included 1338 females and 927

Greek land borders and migration fatalities - Humanitarian disaster described from the standpoint of Evros.

The area of the regional unit of Evros in northern Greece is considered the main gateway to the East and marks the end of the European territory and the beginning of the Asian continent. The natural boundary of the Evros River has been the last major obstacle to overcome before entering the Schengen area for hundreds of thousands of migrants on the eastern Mediterranean route. The river stands, however, for the main place of death for thousands of people who try to enter the country, and therefore the European Union, illegally.
