Plasma nectin-4 levels are associated with changes in executive function in patients with methamphetamine use disorder undergoing treatment.

BACKGROUND: Executive dysfunction can influence the outcomes of methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD). Identifying which individuals experience substantial improvements in executive function after treatment for MAUD is important. Nectin-4, a cell adhesion molecule linked to addiction severity, may be associated with executive function in MAUD patients. This study aimed to compare the plasma levels of nectin-4, and executive function between MAUD patients and healthy controls (HCs) and to explore whether nectin-4 levels are associated with cognitive outcomes during treatment. METHOD: MAUD patien

Effect of alcohol and smoking on methamphetamine users' oral microbiome and metabolome.

Background: The oral microbiome comprises the microbial communities inhabiting the oral cavity, whereas the oral metabolome reflects the small molecules generated by host and microbial metabolic activity. These systems may provide insight into substance-related physiological disruption, including altered inflammation, immune signaling, and host - microbial interactions. Although the individual effects of methamphetamine, alcohol, and smoking have been explored, their combined impact on these systems remains largely unexplored. Objectives: To investigate the metabolic and microbiome alterations

The Phase-Amplitude Coupling Induced by Drug Cues in Individuals With Methamphetamine Use Disorder During Withdrawal.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a major global health challenge, with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) being particularly severe due to its high addictiveness and relapse rate. The neurophysiological basis of MUD remains unclear. AIMS AND METHODS: This study investigated cross-frequency coupling in 46 male abstinent individuals with MUD to examine multi-scale neural information integration. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during exposure to drug-related and neutral cues. Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) and phase slope index (PSI) were used to assess local and directed

The interplay of childhood trauma, oxytocin, and impulsivity in predicting the onset of methamphetamine use.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is associated with substance use disorders, including methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). Oxytocin, involved in social bonding, stress regulation, and reward processing, may influence addiction vulnerability and impulsivity in individuals with a history of childhood trauma. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships among childhood trauma, oxytocin levels, impulsivity, and the age of first methamphetamine use in individuals with MUD. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study included 298 male participants (148 individuals with MUD and 150 healthy controls) from both p

Methamphetamine-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Methamphetamine use is increasing in popularity globally, and chronic users suffer from various drug toxicities, including the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Although it was previously thought to be a possible cause of pulmonary arterial hypertension, as of the sixth World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension, methamphetamine use is now recognized as a definite cause of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This review will discuss the history of methamphetamine use, the link between methamphetamine use and pulmonary arterial hypertension, and the clinical charact

Social isolation at adolescence: a systematic review on behaviour related to cocaine, amphetamine and nicotine use in rats and mice.

Adolescence is known for its high level of risk-taking, and neurobiological alterations during this period may predispose to psychoactive drug initiation and progression into more severe use patterns. Stress is a risk factor for drug consumption, and post-weaning social isolation increases drug self-administration in rodents. This review aimed to provide an overview of the effects of adolescent social isolation on cocaine, amphetamine and nicotine use-related behaviours, highlighting the specific period when animals were submitted to stress and these drugs. We wondered if there was a specific

Altered functional connectivity of the nucleus accumbens subdivisions in amphetamine-type stimulant abusers: a resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The growing abuse of amphetamine-type stimulants leads to new challenges to human health. A possible addiction mechanism has been proposed by altered functional architecture of the nucleus accumbens (NAc) during resting state. NAc contains different subdivisions and they may play different roles in addiction. The aim of the present study was to examine whether there are common or distinct patterns of functional connectivity of the NAc subdivisions in amphetamine-type stimulant abusers (ATSAs). METHODS: The present study recruited 17 male ATSAs and 22 healthy male controls. All the

[Bio-Psycho-Social Characteristics and Therapeutic Aspects of Methamphetamine-Dependent Women - Gender Specific Results of a Systematic Literature Search].

SUBJECT: Compared to other illicit drugs Methamphetamine (MethA) is used more frequently by women than by men. Assuming the biopsychosocial etiology model, the dependency is based on several factors in which women and men differ significantly. Systematic gender-differentiated knowledge is missing until today. METHOD: Based on a database research (PUBMED) the review examines biological, social and psychological as well as therapeutic aspects in MethA-dependent women. RESULTS: MethA-induced cognitive disturbance appear to have severer manifestations in women than in men. MethA-addicted women's

A comparison of adolescent methamphetamine and other substance users in Hawai'i.

Methamphetamine use continues to be a significant problem for adolescents in Hawai'i, especially among Native Hawaiians and other Asian and Pacific Islanders. However, no research has compared the unique characteristics of these methamphetamine (MA) users to other substance users, which could contribute to enhanced treatment approaches. Utilizing a sample of adolescent treatment clients, this study compared those who have ever used and those who have never used methamphetamines on various domains. Results showed that girls were significantly more likely to use methamphetamines than other subst

Drug abuse screening with immunoassays: unexpected cross-reactivities and other pitfalls.

Immunoassays are the only practical means of coping with the increasing demand for drug abuse screening because of their simplicity and ease of automation. However, it is essential that the analyst understands the strengths and weaknesses of such assays to enable correct interpretation of results. This is especially important with the increasing popularity of near-patient testing where assays are liable to be carried out by inexperienced and untrained staff. False-positive and false-negative results, unexpected cross-reactivities and other pitfalls are discussed, together with an attempt to ex

Increased urinary lipoperoxides in drug abusers.

Urine lipoperoxides were measured, as the malondialdehyde-thiobarbituric acid adduct, by "high performance" liquid chromatography in men who tested positive for any of the common "drugs of abuse." Urine malondialdehyde concentrations were within the reference range in those urines containing barbiturates and amphetamines. On the other hand, significant urine malondialdehyde elevations were associated with those testing positive for marijuana (p less than 0.005), cocaine, opiates, benzodiazepines, and in those urines containing multiple drugs (p less than 0.001). The mechanism of tissue damage

Determination of drugs of abuse in body fluids by radioimmunoassay.

Only recently has radioimmunoassay been used for the detection of drugs of abuse in body fluids. The radioimmunoassay method is rapid, sensitive, specific, and can be performed with a minimum of sample, while conventional assay methods are time-consuming, relatively insensitive, and require a larger sample volume. Performance of individual radioimmunoassays is identical, and requires about one hour to complete. The radioimmunoassays which have been developed for measurement of drugs of abuse in humans are reviewed in this paper. These new techniques are of importance in individual and/or emerg

Drug use and employment patterns before and during treatment.

This paper was initiated to study the effect of outcome measures as they relate to indication of treatment success. Results have shown that after the third month in treatment, drug use decreases very little. Time in treatment in significantly related to urin-analysis results during the first 3 months; that is, those clients who were to remain in treatment for longer periods were those whose average opiate use during the first 3 months were lowest. We also found that no relationship exists between pretreatment opiate use and opiate use during any evaluation time period. Analysis of employment c
